Omniknight is an absurdly good hero , much synergy with yolo heroes like offlane clock/bat/centaur or storm/panda which fits the current ganking metagame. If you end up in a 1/1/3 vs 3/1/1 laning situation, would omniknight be a good 4th pick? He starts off with a weaker ganking power but from lv6 onwards i think he is the best support out there.

Why don't pros pick omniknight more, especially when you have a trilane situation where the lane is pretty much won

His laning phase is awful, kind of like Ogre Magi who isn't that bad overall. He could work in a defensive trilane but that's about it I feel. Then the problem becomes if the lane is won, he's not a good roamer/ganker and doesn't really farm much other than Mek + Standard support items.

So you want to pick Omni in greedy situations to defend a lineup, but he himself sucks which adds to the burden. Don't know gravy.

I can't help but feel that there's a whole lot of offlane matchups that Omni could just do nothing in. I'm curious if offlane Omni is underrated because he's actually decent, or because it isn't obvious how to punish how weak an offlane omni should be.

In the trench omni's winrate is above 55%, but his winrate in the very high skilled range is/was below 50%.

Omniknight feels like a good counterpick support against glasscannon hero's like a pa/riki/ember. I dont like omniknight offlane against a trilane, other heros feel better suited for this task. As a support he has a hard time finding farm/xp he needs, but if he is a counterpick it should not matter much.

The problem of picking omniknight is that other supporthero's can gank with there slows and still have a supporting skillset pre lvl 6, omniknight cant gank at all. If i want living armour+slow i pick treant, if i want greed+stun+slow i pick enchantress, and if i want grave+heal+slow i get dazzle and if i want to push i get myself a chen army. I tend to pick omniknight only against the rightclicker or glascannon lineup.

Omniknight is a pretty niche hero. He's comparable to Shadow Priest in skillset with way worse mana scaling, higher farm dependency and is melee. If you want to make the hero justice, Omniknight can be played in certain matchups mid to great success - but if you don't give him farm he's a wandering BKB on a single target and can occasionally throw out an ultimate. Unless he tries to right-click someone in a fight where he melts.

I enjoy Omni versus Pudge or Crix mid especially.

Edit:

He's equal to Tidehunter in ability to go in and get levels, but is more farm dependent.

Well, he's situational as well as any hero in pool right now. DotA is so diverse now, not like few years ago.
But he's #2 in general (mid hero).

Also, i have a question.
Why the fuck does Gyrocopter's ultimate kill Visage's birds again? Is it a bug or what, because i don't remember seeing flak cannon is available to kill familiars line in patchnotes since remove.

Would you guys recommend hopping to play matchmaking straight away, or try to build fundamentals against bots? Things like last-hitting, pulling, stacking, ward placements, etc.

I've 400 hours of experience, but I have been off the game for like 6 months and I want to come back as best as I can.

Bots doesn't really provide experience. First of all you need to grow thick skin to play DotA, only then going hard. But considering amount of "smurfs" in publics, i assume it might be hard, so you can try with bots, why not, or get friends and set up lobbies. Last-hitting isn't hard at all, positioning to last hit is way harder, for example and so on.
But if you're courageous enough or just don't have enough friends, i probably would have gone to matchmaking if i were you.

And i can't call ward placements as fundamentals, there are so many possible placements that even i with 6 years experience sometimes sitting in awe with what i just saw :D

I suppose you can play a couple of bot games to get comfortable with animations and stuff again. But nothing beats actually playing if you want to get used to how the whole game plays out.

If I'm playing a melee hero mid versus a ranged hero, how do I know if it's worth it to go into the river to go for a last hit?

For instance, I like to play DK mid. A very popular pick for mid in lower levels where I'm playing is drow ranger or sniper; I can't really sit next to the creeps and last hit at the last second because I'll take a lot of poke. Generally I buy soul ring first so i can cast dragon breath to last hit while doing some harass damage, but the first few levels it seems like I'm really struggling for every last hit, and if I get to greedy, I'll quickly lose a lot of health (and maybe get the creep I was going for denied anyway!). I have this problem a lot, and even in top or bottom lane versus 2 ranged heroes or a ranged and a melee, if my support isn't the best, I really feel like it's tough to know when to go forward for those last hits.

spam breath of fire for last hits for bottle, continue doing so, you might not win the lane, you also won't lose it. as long as you secure runes for your bottle, you are in good shape. just siege the tower at level 6. DK rarely loses mid, just dont go soul ring

I usually don't use bottle because very very few people in the games I have been in will buy wards, so it's a pure 50/50 guess as to who will get the rune. Also, my question applies to other lanes as well. I can't use mana for every last hit...

Its probably worth it even with the 50/50 though. Try to time it so that you spend mana to clear the last wave at XX:50 so that you can go to one of the rune spots without missing creeps.

Dont be discouraged to do things "the right" way. I know myself I used to skip bottle mid when I was lower level because I didnt want to bother with the extra management involved with it. But if you wanna improve (which I assume since you're here asking), buckle up and start practicing =)

Also for melee vs ranged, learn the creep aggro trick where you pull the creeps towards you. You can probably google/youtube it if you dont know what I mean.

just buy your own wards if noone else will, a bottle and a set of wards is 800g which is the same as a soul ring
here's a game by bulba, watch him lane against viper. notice how he doesn't walk in for lasthits until the last second, and he spams fire breath via bottle crow. he also draws creep agro by rightclicking puck every now and then

Question 1: Why does Viper slaughter pubbies? Seriously he is probably the best pubstomper in the game.

Question: Just got ranked MM yesterday (also my first rampage). Anything I need to knows/learn from the transition of pubbies to ranked??
