I'm still kinda new to dota and i have the following 2 problems when playing with randoms, i would assume i'm ranked very low.
1) my allies pick complete bs lineups that make it near impossible to win (i usually pick last for damage control but more often than not they just pick 4x carry) 2) i would like to play support, but if i am not a carry chances are the carry(s) in my team can't farm effienctly enough so we eventually end up losing because of that - what do? 3) how can I encourage players to play as a team, quite often everyone does random stuff and nobody reacts if a teamfight happens or a tower gets attacked.

All normal indications for low ranked players, yes. People pick the hero they want because they think he's cool or has a fun playstyle, rather than whats needed. They also play a style more similar to singleplayer rather than actual online team game, don't ever expect the enemy team to tp into a fight, but expect to fight over lasthits from the support, and for the guy with globals to steal kills. The enemies does the same too though, for the most part.
The most control you can have over a game on your team is as solo mid. If you think you should be ranked higher, try that for a while and bring the winratio up. Even if you want to play as support, its worth doing for a month to bring yourself up to the point where your team actually manages to make use of you as support.

I have no idea what would be on the FAQ that would actually be useful. It's either too small to contain everything or too long; didn't read. Nadja's liquipedia idea definitely seems smart! I just missed being able to yell at firebolt to update OPs.

you put up the most frequently asked questions? lol for example, questions regarding solo pubbing in low lvl matchmaking like above have been asked 1283791 times. could probably quote an answer from this thread or just make up a generic answer. problem is whos gonna be bothered to pretty much go through the whole thread to look at what questions are asked most. despite visiting this thread like everyday im having trouble thinking of questions off the top of my head lol

Solo mid without a decent supporter is just very annoying, if they would at least ward one rune spot at the very start i could buy the second set of wards myself, but quite often nobody even buys the courier. So assuming the worst possible scenario i have to buy courier and wards myself starting with a set of tango only in mid, i don't want that.
Oh and i play with a very good friend sometimes, he plays dota 2 since beta and played at least 3 years of dota 1. I was doing quite well with him and another friend of him. We were winning 9 out of 10 games, but when i'm alone i always get very frustrating games, to the point that i don't want to play dota 2 anymore.

1) Mostly irrelevant in lower tier games because the coordination often isn't there to take advantage of actually "good" lineups anyways, and the enemy team is likely just as bad, if not worse. I've won games with 4 "carries" and lost games against 5 "carries" (support juggernaut apparently worked!), and those have been in one of the higher brackets. Even if your lineup seems completely random, find or theorize an inherent strength of the lineup (pushing, teamfight, ganking etc) and try play towards that.
2) Playing support when your carry can't farm is frustrating. The first thing to do is to watch the replay, look very closely, and make SURE that it's just your farmer failing to lasthit, and not you or your team failing to make space for them. If you conclude that it's just them failing, then you can stop prioritizing trying to secure their farm, and instead try single pulling to push their tower, or roam to gank mid, all while asking your carry to build immediately relevant items instead of a battlefury and roam/gank/push as well.
3) Easiest to do as a support or a mid. Buy wards, command the game, ping for smokes, lead and communicate ganks. One or two good plays and your team will start to trust you and listen to you, which gives you a platform from which to build some actual team play.

We had a list of potential questions in a staff forum somewhere but it got lost sometime. I'll find it someday.

All roles have drawbacks with bad team. But you can still influence the outcome most as a solo mid in lower tier games than you can as a support with shit carries or a carry who gets no farm because no support. No one pays attention and warding is bad to say the least. Ganking is the easiest thing as a mid in these games. Try storm spirit or something, and watch you snowball into victory of a couple of early kills.

Only works when its not bugged. They're talking about the bug where it tells you that you have a new item, but nothing actually shows up. It wont go away then. Nothing major or gamebreaking, just mild annoyance.

The whole point for playing solo mid is that you are independent of your team. If you are better than your enemy, you can outlane him, and depending on heroes kill him multiple times. Depending on your hero, you can just go gank and kill all the sidelane heroes too. If you're not really better than all the people you criticize, however.........
At least playing solo mid will teach you some important lessons about what people call tempo or flow of the game. Also it will teach you about whether or not you can kill someone or be killed in return. While less fancy, those judgment experiences are way more important than being good at lasthitting or good at "supporting".

One thing i kinda find counter-intuitive but true, multiple invi lineups work really well. Like nyx, riki, bh, weaver... some combination of these dont ruin the game, as expected but are pretty lethal.
Support stuff is spread thinner, and when they buy gem (if ever) in a teamfight they dont know which one to chase... I guess it s just a lower level stuff, still...
Side question: dota2lounge.com down for evryone?

Gotcha! It's as much for the symbol they provide as the actual utility of the thing. When I was playing in lower tier games, people that warded consistently or smoke ganked or farmed well were like gods to me... not because it was hard, but because it was evidence of higher tier play. It's easier to believe people are good even in higher tier games if they make use of or try to make use of everything at their disposal. If you're aiming to lead people it's easier to do if you seem impressive to them... even if it's a lie .

I've found the 100% most effective way to make a bunch of low-tier pubs gank the enemy jungle together is smoking them against their will.
Just buy a smoke and attach yourself to the strongest ganker on your team, even if they're afk farming. As soon as their random meandering brings them near a third ally, pop the smoke. I've yet to find a player who won't get the hint. Bonus points if you've managed to ward the enemy jungle beforehand and can ping a target straightaway.

I'm not saying that i'm the best player in this game, i probably suck, but at least I try to fulfill the role of my character. But being a support with all my items, than looking at my carry that has an unfinished battle fury and nothing else 35 minutes in is a shitty spot to be in.
|
one thing to always keep in mind when playing dota is, dont conform to roles. this isnt lol where a hero must be played in a certain way and has to go to a certain lane. support heroes CAN carry too, if youre good enough to pull it off. if after 2mins of laning you can already tell your carry is bad, proceed to steal last hits and go carry cm/dazzle/insertsupporthere. otherwise, just go mid and try and 1v5 the game pretty much
