You don't need much items for support alchemist actually. Don't skill greed before maxing everything else. Alchemists spells are quite strong actually, and many people don't realize that because Alch is usually playwed very greedy.
The main problem will be to get in range for stun, so probably either phase boots or tranq boots. Aside from that, play like a support. Have TP scrolls, defend towers, go ganking, plant wards etc.
I wouldn't recommend it for pubs, pubs are awful at realizing that you're not doing the usual thing(playing carry).

medallion is a pretty common item on support alchemist. similar to visage, if you throw the concoction and medallion them before it hits (and acid spray perhaps) it deals a crapton of damage. With greevil's greed, you can farm up a little by the late game, and transition to a utility / tanky hero in the late game. Mouz (a long time ago, when they had Alex) used to run support Alch pretty often, and there was a NaVi game in the Alienware Cup where Puppey played a support alch, and was given more and more farm by his team as he got levels in greed, eventually ending up with an ac / basher vod

DK ran support alch just the other day. (In lane with a farming visage of all things ) It's reasonably common, alchs offensive spells are really quite good and maxing them early makes him a threat both in lane and as a ganker. Some combination of phase boots, urn, bracer, medallion for items. Mek is good if you are finding gold. So is dagger.

Stuns, Hex, Root, Silence, and usually Slows are examples of cc.

Okay, what do you call the snot-green player colour?
I always end up staring at the pick screen for ages trying to talk to that guy without resorting to "snot, take a carry."
Light-blue (cyan?) and teal(?) also give me problems.

#2 on dire.
What I would call teal is #2 on radiant.
|
hm. light green perhaps?
How do you view sentry sight range in game?
|
only spectators can see the range of wards. the palyers wont see it.
|
Cyan would be #3 Dire, I suppose you could say #2 is olive or light green. You're better off just referrin to the player by name or hero though, imo.

Blue, Teal, Purple, Bright Yellow, Orange Pink, Dim Yellow, Light Blue, Green, Brown
There are different names for shades of yellow, but seriously most people wouldn't understand what you mean. Lemon, orange yellow, maize, gold, mustard, naples yellow. Either it wouldn't be the correct color or most people wouldn't even know you talk about colors. Bright and dim/dark yellow are imho the best way to differentiate.

just turn the settings into red/green colors according to your team and also display heronames in minimap, so you dont have the trouble of calling colors. (little bonus, the dark green of dire is usually horrible to spot on the minimap, now you will see it clearly)

To the Visage players here, how do you hotkey and use the familiars? I randomed him in an AR game earlier. I used to have this old hotkey set up from Dota 1: 1-2 hero. 3-5 courier.
This was my setup from earlier 1 - Visage 2 - Familiar 1 3 - Familiar 2 4 - Both Familiars
but I had a hard time landing the familiar where I wanted them to. The chaos of the battles just made it hard to do follow up stuns with the familiars so I moved the familiars to two and just tabbed through them which made it a bit easier to land stuns. It was still hard to get them on good spots and stun and still get to maximize soul assumption.
|
I use f1 as hero (default) and f2 as both familiars. Rarely if ever do you want only one of your two birds to do something, and in situations where you need a specific bird to do something, it's easy enough to just select and micro them manually.
Adding individual hotkeys for them wouldn't work for me unless they had floating "1" or "2" tags above them. Especially in conjunction with a hotkey for both, it'd be impossible to keep track of which was which, and I'd probably get hung up faltering between selections and wasting time not using soul assumption or something better.

When targeted by Doom's ultimate while at low HP, is there something to do apart from hoping an ally will deny you if you don't have lifesteal? Since it deactivates most passives and items, you can't use Mekansm or TP to fountain.

burst heal can be your savior, but you have to rely on your teammates since your muted. if someone has mek that can save you, chen heal, dazzle, omni, etc.

mm. if you're at low hp and get doomed and there's no one around you, there's really not much you can do but accept the your impending doom.
