Hello ladies and gents,
I am pretty new to Dota2. I used to play HoN a couple of years a go when the mechanics was simply cloned from Dota (u know - secret shops, no default courier etc. etc.).
I want to get started as a Dota2 player this time and I have 2 questions:
1. Do you find it more optimal to learn 1 specific role and hero pretty well - like carry/support/initiator or should I rather get familiar with everything by practice, by trying different heroes depending on my lineup?
2. Are the games against the AI a viable way to learn something or should I rather skip that and likely ruin some initial games of a team, that I find myself in?
Thank you.

if you really want to learn, i suggest you watch some ingame replays (not vods cuz you cant move the camera) and watch how people play the role you are interested in.

i wouldnt bother playing with AI since you already played hon and its like the same game back then. just watch some replays and pick heroes you want to play.

if people bitch and moan at you feeding/failing just mute them or say "why are your in my mmr range". Everyone was a noob once, most people dont mind noobs who are not obnoxious and are willing to learn.

Is there a hotkey for leveling up stats? I know Ctrl + Q/W/E/R Will level the respective skill, is there something for leveling a hero's stats other than clicking the level up button, then the stats?

I believe its customizable in game as well. If igotmyown is right then the default is "U" but you should be able to find it somewhere in the disastrous options menu.

Thank you guys for your beautiful answers .
I am going to watch some replays then and start laddering on Weekend. Since I have a pretty serious attitude to any competitive games I play I think I need some sort of preparation before getting started.
I think I am going to try out heroes like Tidehunter, Outerworld Devourer, Lion, Lich, Crystal Maiden and maybe Luna since they all look quite beginner-friendly (at least at the first glance!
Once again - thanks for some great help.

Honestly, while it doesn't hurt to watch a couple of replays, just go play the game and have fun. You're not gonna be competitive for a looong long time so I don't see a need for preparation if you already got the basics of the game down.

As for heroes: Strength heroes are usually quite beginner friendly as they have more hp and, usually, pretty simple spells.
Skeleton King, Sven and Dragon Knight are all pretty straight forward heroes that don't die too quickly.

Lion, Lich, Luna and Crystal Maiden are all kinda squishy and/or have slow movement speed which means your positioning is key to survival and that's usually a skill you lack when you're a beginner.

Just stay the hell away from Meepo, Invoker, Morphling, Tinker, (there's probably more 'different' heroes) as they are quite different from the other heroes in the game.

Quick question - do illusions get the bonus attack speed from the aura of AC?

I don't believe they do, but maybe there is some quirk of the way it was coded in WC3 that i don't know about.

Edit; Actually I think they do.

Nevermind.

Why do guides show to get Power Treads on Drow Ranger instead of Phase Boots? I was always under the impression that the damage and speed boost were great! Another Drow question: Why do guides show 2 Wraith Bands as early game items? I know that 1 can be turned into the Ring of Aquila (another item that doesn't seem that good to me. But what do I know?), but the other seems rather useless later on. It's not building towards anything and just takes up inventory space.

Drow scales uniquely well with agility since she provides a global aura of damage based on her agility. As such, treads allow her to have more agility. Besides, she slows enemies 60% or something so there's really no need for the MS from phase. With no other mobility skill the small boost from activating phase is unlikely to help you escape.

2X Wraith bands is pretty bad, but some games you just gotta buy cheap cost-efficient stuff and hope it works. In most circumstances don't bother though, wraith bands aren't going to give you the damage or the survivability you need. An aquila is only good if you intend on pushing your lane during the early game while your team distracts them. If that happens it is good, otherwise don't bother. Even then, it could just be a ring of basilius.

That all makes sense. I've found myself skipping the Wraths and working on something like a Yasha instead. Is this a viable option do you think? If not, what would you recommend to replace the Wraths?

Very much less important but in DotA 1 (I can't find if DOTA2 has parity with this) manual casting frost arrows would break phase active.

My understanding is that all that matters is what direction you are facing relative to the source of the damage at the time that the damage tick occurs.

so as long as you are facing away from axe, even if your on the other side of the map from him, youl benefit from the reduction.

Bristleback reduces any damage received if your back is facing the hero that is giving you the damage. It doesn't actually matter where the projectile/whatever is coming from as long as your back is facing the hero.

In your specific example, as long as you have your back facing Axe, no matter where he is on the map, the damage reduction will apply.
