All you need is an AC somewhere in the team, worst case build it yourself. The hero in general wants to teamfight left right and center every time his ult is up. If used properly it's almost impossible to win teamfights against global. To add more: There are video guides from 2009 somewhere here in the Dota forum. They were quite enlightening. Silencer basically wants to teamfight and be involved in kills as often as possible. Since he is slow, you don't want to gank though. You want to get ganked and countergank. Or preferably, you want to be close to your teammates when they get ganked(assuming your teammates aren't super bad and just run away from 1 enemy without using any spells). Ideal scenario is your teammate is lasthitting creeps in plain sight, you are a bit behind(still in exp range!). When the enemies jump on him, you activate activate global silence to disrupt their intitiation.(If a queen of pain blinks in but doesn't get spells off before you use silence, you're doing it right). In any case, try to be in 900 range of anyone who dies. You don't need to actually get the kill as long as you're close to the dying enemies. If you're around for only half of your teams kills, you will have much bonus intelligence as your team has kills. You will also get assist gold for every kill you are close to and every enemy killed outside of that range, if you did enough damage to that enemy. Good items on silencer are power treads, mekansm/drums, sheepstick/orchid. Aghanims has potential to be really good after you maxed CotS(depending on build level 10 or level 14). Mekansm is really good in teamfights and gives good armor. Jakiro's liquid fire slows the attack speed of towers and Desolator's orb effect reduces the armour of towers, and AC's aura reduces their armour as well. Because Desolator and liquid fire were changed so that they affect towers. For the longest time nothing affected towers.

What are the downsides with this, why isn't this more frequently used? (or is it used commonly?!) the downside to this is that it's bad. Instead of getting a decently timed Midas (6~+), you'll be getting it at 8~ minutes. Might not sound like much of a difference but it's huge. Your TP should also not be on cooldown so you can help gank/counter gank early game.

(or is it used commonly?!) u will die to trolls at the radiant jungle if youre unlucky at lvl 1. also, since youre maxing teleport instead you have to make use of ganks, as you will not farm as fast or push as fast

As another side question, I see both drow and sniper get shadowblade as late game starts to slink around. Would gettig a divine rapier on either hero be a cheesy risk to get kills by invis, and if so how effectve is it? Thanks

They try not to die early on and farm to become unstoppable lategame and in the process they help pushes and teamfights well because of nice ranged dps. What is the difference between these two heroes? All I can tell is that drow has slows and silence=better 1v1 and teamfight where sniper is better at pushing and finishing off because of shrapnel, long range and his ult. They still seem similar to me. As another side question, I see both drow and sniper get shadowblade as late game starts to slink around. Thanks drow isnt necessarily better at 1v1, slow is useful for orb walking and at lvl 6 it becomes very hard to outlast hit her, but snipers headshot is actually quite painful too. but overall they are quite similar. i would say that one would play drow the same way they play a silencer, just farm up as much as you can and when i fight starts you want to position yourself somewhere around the back just throwing all your shit down. also, they both fit into niche strats (i.e they cant be picked with every line up). there was once a time when drow and sniper were considered some of the hardest carries, but not anymore
