People will now have more incentive to shut down that specific hero throughout the game. People who can play multiple heroes at a 6000+ level will not be affected because they are not counter picked easily and can pick a variety of heroes against a line up. People like Blitz, waga will drop down to their true MMRs - around 6.5k, while people with high mechanical skill like Arteezy and w33 who can play multiple heroes at a very high level will rise in MMR. I was following you up to a point and then no.

Is knowing which team has the higher average MMR supposed to change how you play? I believe the point is to be able to compare highest and average on one team.

You want to see who the highest MMR is on your own team and compare it to your team average so you know whether there is a large discrepancy and can plan accordingly, putting that player mid for example. You also want to know the MMR of the highest player on the enemy team so that there is no surprise of a mismatch. And of course then you will want to know the enemy team's average MMR so that you can be assured the overall match is relatively even. If you had only three of those data points you would be left with lingering questions about how balanced the game is, all the way up until the game result screen. I see it as connecting four dots in a square rather than leaving one of the dots unconnected and the square unfinished.

This is the one I don't understand. I don't see how knowing whether your match is more or less mismatched actually makes your game better. Like sure, there's the "lingering question", but I don't see how not knowing how even your game is changes anything about your game.

Because people treat the lowest MMR player on their team like shit. No one's going to treat you poorly for being the highest MMR, so showing that's fine, but people definitely will be assholes to the lowest MMR player if it's shown. And showing the highest MMR on the other team seems to just guarantee that they'll get camped lol (as Blitz has apparently already seen). I really would like to know what data Valve is looking at to judge the success of this experiment though: I'd be surprised if they didn't make this change with pretty specific ideas of what success or failure looked like.

It doesn't change anything about your game, it's more like... statistical validation? Like if you're 7k and your team average is 4k and you're against a 6.8k top opponent you don't have much context over how that 6.8k compares to the rest of his team. I'm certainly not saying that all of the data points carry equal weight. Knowing your team's top MMR and your team's average is pretty critically important because it can potentially directly influence your game plan. Knowing the enemy team's average MMR is more just reassuring because 1) you can calculate (or at least estimate) how much rating you stand to gain or lose and 2) you know that you're not being screwed by the matchmaking system.

I mean don't you get 2 at the end of games regardless? As for 1, that's true but I don't see that as a hugely valuable calculation to be able to make mid-game e: immediately after writing this I watched the vod from Fear's stream right after this change was implemented and the *first* thing he did after getting excited about the changes (and doing a ppd wut) was basically what you mentioned in 1. So I guess I'm wrong there lol.

i thought the patch was great. and great for the majority. if you are a more prolific player and well known, you would get focused or counter picked more. the other team would also cordinate more to shut you down if they know how good you are. whereas someone just as high MMR on the other team cannot prove his worth if he is not as prolific and thus it makes it harder for your team to decide who to counter pick. so by nature of your identity you are at a disadvantage in drafts because they can isolate the strongest player on your team vs your team being incapable of doing it to theirs. this one patch removes that and gives high mmr players a fair chance on both sides which makes me jump with joy. generally in my games i know who the other high mmr players are on the other team, but generally the players on my team either don't or don't realize who is the most dangerous on theirs and thus don't focus them. now i don't have to lose games just cause i'm the sole focus. i hope it stays this way and icefrog realizes how good of an idea it is.

All those people complaining about the whole I am highest I play mid argument, these kinds of stupid shit happened so much in the first place anyway, so how does this change anything?
