Artifact has a paid model yes, you pay for cards if you want to play constructed and have all the best toys. But even if you want all the best things it's still averagely cheaper than something like hearthstone (barring you getting ultra omega lucky with your packs).

Ontop of that it has plenty of game modes where the money you've dumped into the game are 100% meaningless, meaning you can buy artifact for 20$ and play it indefinitely without ever facing anyone who has a paid advantage over you.

+ now you even unlock more cards and get reward tickets for playing the game, meaning you can slowly unlock cards even without dropping more money, plus you can use the market to sell stuff you don't care about, or recycle duplicates into more reward tickets.

Sure it's not f2p and grind to win, it has an upfront cost which might not appeal to people who want to just waste time on a freemium game like hearthstone, but it's just a really well designed game and probably the best digital card game made from a gameplay perspective.

I've talked to a ton of people who have a super negative opinion on artifact without ever actually looking into the game or trying it. Sure, if the game was still in its launch state I could understand some complaints, but valve has in just a month after its release made multiple big updates that fixed almost all issues the game had.

Artifact feels like a console/mobile game to me, but right now it is pc only which makes it feel like a beta game.

It's coming to mobile, so it was definitely designed with that in mind. I kind of hope it makes it to the switch, holy cow would it be comfy to play on the switch screen in bed.

Doesn't Artifact have less active players than Gwent at this point?

You have to understand that the people I am talking about already play a TON of board games and card games already. They play magic and dig out Netrunner(RIP) for come asymmetrical card gaming. They dabble in games weird card games like Keyforge(a weirdly compelling game). Artifact has a lot to compete with.

I don't have a problem with Artifact. I think it is fine and sounds like a good online card game. But there are a lot of those out there. This sort of feels like a mini version of the Magic and Pokemon CCG boom from the 1990s, where we got a Babylon 5 card game because it was easy make the art for(stills from the show).

Artifact might be fun to play but I've yet to find any joy in spectating it as a layman.

My issue with artifact is just the sheer game length. The "20-45 minutes, deep competetive gameplay" space already contains dota, so it seems weird that they targeted the exact same demographic twice. Plus dota's free.

I'm enjoying MTG arena at the moment, but there's definite issues with T/CCGs in an online competetive environment. P2W and randomness is fine when you're playing with your mates, but playing vs the whole world really seems to distort these games.

Arena's economy seems pretty good from a progression standpoint. I do think wildcards setting value at rarity rather than market has some problems. Crafting some random B-mythic for a jank deck feels like lighting money on fire when it could be an arclight phoenix or a teferi instead, so you just end up beelining the top netdeck and then grind it forever to keep up with the meta. I'm sure this contributes to the repetitiveness.

Finished reading the bunny girl senpai manga, it went way too quickly to be honest. Maybe the LN and anime do a better job, but the manga really wasn't much to write home about. There was a lot of potential in the pilot concept (girl is invisible to everyone else) but it really needed a better treatment than the manga gave it. Although I wouldn't be surprised if the manga was just a straight plot adaptation that cut some of the internal ramblings of characters or dialogue to save space/time.

Poorly done manga adaptions are just there to make a quick buck, they're typically bottom of the barrel as far as quality or adaptions go.

I can't recommend reading a manga if it's not the original source material, or in a few incredible exceptions to the rule.

Yeah, the Darling in the FRANXX adaptation's also a bit odd, and probably longer than it needs to be. Although it might be different since it was announced alongside the show. There's also the weird case of the Evangelion manga since it was started a few months before the show, but also didn't finish until 2013 due to the author being super busy with other projects. Eva's manga was also written and drawn by the same guy who designed the characters for the anime.

I think generally speaking, I tend to forget about LNs a lot which makes me pick up weird/bad adaptations quite a bit. But I also haven't looked around for LN translations.

LN translations are generally of much lower quality than manga or anime. This isn't really a surprise as it is far more work to translate and generally far harder (dialogue is usually the easiest to translate). Even official translations can be a bit wonky.
I think nekomimiko was the last ln I read that I really enjoyed. Probably because it was half jokes about poorly programmed games.

https://www.novelupdates.com/series/kono-sekai-ga-game-da-to-ore-dake-ga-shitte-iru/

Because it is so much harder, it is rare to see anything but the most broadly appealing stuff translated well.
