I enjoyed WoW when I played it, but didn't feel like paying for a subscription when there's no guarantee I'd be able to actively play the game.

I've asked around for BDO but the endgame is PVP and there aren't raids.

GW2 is something I have played before and feel like I'd need a playgroup to actually get into it.

I'll look into FF14 a bit more seriously, thanks!

I played Tera a while ago and it was decent. Fairly standard Korean MMO though, so it's not gonna be fun for everyone. I didn't know it was still alive tbh.

Also FFXIV is subscription based btw so you might not like it in that case.

It's just that between all the VNs and random RPGs I have on Steam I haven't even played yet, let alone beaten, I didn't wanna pay money for WoW. If I had unlimited time to play, the $15 a month wouldn't mean anything.

FF14 is what I'm currently playing most of the time, so if you have questions I could maybe answer them. There is a 14 day trial that lets you get to level 35 on every "base class." So you dont get to play Dark Knight (tank), Astrologian (yugioh healer), Machinest (ranged DPS). Samurai (melee DPS) and Red Mage (Caster)

If you're playing on NA servers you can very easily earn your playtime in WoW
Requires a bit of intial effort to get everything set up but after that you can easily have a ton of passive income that coupled with minimal playtime will cover the price of a token,

Even on EU servers where tokens are way more expensive it's still fairly easy

Well, it's basically passive income

If you put in the initial effort you can passively earn like 30-40k gold a day by just using the phone app to send followers onto missions, but that requires quite a few characters at max level (a token is 180k gold on NA atm)
I think each character you have at max level can net you 2.5k gold a day, if not a bit more passively
So even a single max level character is already 75k a month just by using a phone app for 1 minute a day lol

I have a few NA friends that barely play WoW but are just using this to slowly earn gold while taking a break for when they come back

Edit: Also wow token cash can be used in other games, one friend uses WoW to fund his hearthstone collection

No idea, the expansion before this one was even crazier for passive gold income (caused the worst inflation the game has ever seen)
this one ended up being decent for it towards the end

but this passive gold will definitely get nerfed harshly when this expansion ends just like the one before it, odds are they'll bring it back in some form or another again the next expansion though

Still 7 more months before the next expansion though, i should stop being lazy and set up my characters for it, i have a lot of max level characters and just haven't bothered setting them up for the passive gold

I just remember the fleet being hilarious for getting money without doing anything for it. And the follower quests, yeah. What's the flavour reason for keeping them in the game? The plot of WoD is "let's set up a base and attack but you, random ____ will help us to do that."

Well in Legion you become the de facto leader of a group of people of the same class as you trying to fight the Legion, so you send your followers/recruits out to fight the legion

next expansion is a war focused expansion so i'm sure they'll bring it back like 'you're sending out troops to do recon, sneak attacks, whatever'

The guy I played WoW with was amazed with the prospect of new HS cards for his collection, so I might look up a guide in setting it up. I have a few 100s from WoD, but they're all tanks due to how easy they are to level. Thanks so much for the info!

While I never got to really try WoW during its glory days, I think it's still one of the better MMOs I've tried. Hated the monthly sub as a kid, but now I realize why it's a good idea.

Tanks are still the easiest to level in WoW

The #1 thing i'd aim for if i were you would be to unlock Flying in Legion, idk how long that takes nowadays though

Also there's a thing every day where a random zone gets invaded by the legion and it gives a ton of experience to go participate in clearing it out, i used that to level up my alts, would equip heirlooms and go clear it out on one character and then log on the next and clear it there too (took like 15-20 minutes and gave 1 level every time from 100-110)
it's neat for leveling up multiple alts at once

I would skip it to be honest. Especially if I'd be using WoW to farm stuff for other games. I seem to remember you can just teleport to important places in WoW, no? Like raid entrances, that kinda thing?

The time you save with flying really adds up over time ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But to be fair legion flying is fairly easy to get, it's just blocked by reputation required being time-gated in some cases, you could probably unlock flying in 2 days if it wasn't for the reputation stuff, the reputation stuff probably takes 2-3 weeks based on the time-gating

Edit: you can get teleported to raids, yeah

I think that the whole timegated flying thing is smart, but also really annoying. Shame I can't fly at reduced speeds or something. And especially THIS late into an expansion, it's just a chore more than anything else. I remember the rep for WoD being some truly hot garbage to grind.
