ur wayyyyy low on summit lol. I'd be shocked if he had a single streaming day under $1K donations in the past 6 months He also streams 7 days a week. Probably over 350 days a year.

dota's a shitty ass game to stream btw for a variety of reasons.

I'm being conservative with my estimates.
watched him grow from a warz streamer with 15 viewers and working at some telecom company, to what he's doing now. I'm real happy for him.
i still remember when he announced he just went out and bought 2 honda civics with cash lmao

probably cuz most of the dota streamers are pros who want to spend more time scrimming and practicing rather than streaming

okay well it's also hard as fuck to build ur stream etc but thats beside the point.

I just mean you can't take literally one of the top streamers out there and be like omg why didn't I stream forsen so rich~

without looking at the thousands of other people that have tried exactly that and failed lol

It's just like wondering why you didn't become a pro-gamer because you could win TI, or didn't start a startup because you coulda been instagram or whatever

well this all started with destiny speaking about relatively stable streamers. he specifically referenced maximusblack, who is a 500-1000 viewer streamer and is rumored to be in the ~200k/yr range. Of course black is still on the higher echelon of twitch streamers overall even if hes not Trump/Forsen/Lirik/Kripp level, but it still highlights you can make serious money even if you aren't a top 10 streamer.

it's definitely much more of a profession than I think anyone would have predicted a few years ago

curious to see how sustainable it ends up being but ~200k a year is pretty solid even factoring in being self employed and stuff

I think there is probably a large number of reasons. We don't really have the same personalities as in other games. Comparatively most of our pro players are really boring. They lack that streaming personality that you had with Idra/Destiny/Dragon for SC2. And then of all the streams that show Dota there are maybe 3 to 5 that you learn anything from besides the very basics. The player commentary doesn't really add much normally so you're almost better just watching games in client and figuring out what the top pubstars are doing.

Also when you think about League, Hearthstone and SC2 specifically you can go to specific streams to learn things about various positions/decks/races. With Dota 2 unless the player is known for a specific hero (like Jerax on Kaolin, or W33 Meepo) you're getting a crapshoot on where the person is going to play as well as what hero they are going to play.

I could probably go into more detail with this, but that's the basics of what I think. Not sure how right I am though.

There are so few dota streamers that are fun to watch. You have to be a super fan of a specific player to enjoy their stream. I watch Draskyl just because he plays ok music and is fun to watch, but most players I can’t deal with. PPD and Fear are fun sometimes, but that’s about it. Watching someone like EE is like pulling teeth.

Summit's top donator atm is $20,750. Did some really give him 20k?

He's a cool guy, I watch his stream every now and then.

that doesn't answer why so few top pros stream relative to other games

my knowledge of league is relatively limited but as far as I can tell most of the top pros at least on US teams stream. Like you definitely see plenty of TSM/CLG/Liquid/whatever streams pretty regularly.

I don't really follow hearthstone that much anymore but there are a bunch of top level players streaming right now and that seems to just about always be the case.

Dota pros seem to be much likely than average to stream regularly.

Singu is fun to watch because of how toxic/stupid it is, Universe/PPD/fear are nice because it's NEL and slightly more organized, and I enjoy watching scrims/somewhat organized games.

IIRC, most of the top pro's in LoL have streaming contracts? Could also be bullshit, though since Cloud9 players don't stream that often and it just might be TSM/CLG/Liquid with their orgs. Also, all hail le General Oddone, he is best LoL streamer.

man tc plays way better music than insufferable draskyl

I think ee's one of the most polarizing figures I've ever come across

DotA 2's stream viewerbase is a lot more insular as well.

http://blog.twitch.tv/2015/02/visual-mapping-of-twitch/

There was a Twitch blog mapping out the interactions of the respective Twitch games, and one of the notable things is that in general, DotA 2 tends to be pretty isolated from other games--people who were watching DotA 2 at the times observed tended to only watch DotA 2, and there was a lot less cross-contamination than there is between other games.

You could speculate a lot on why this is the case (difficulty of DotA 2 as a game, how inhospitable DotA is to newcomers from other games a lot of the time, etc.), but it probably does contribute to why DotA 2 stream numbers tend to be comparatively low compared to other games.

When most Dota pros went pro streaming didnt even exist. LoL evolved with streams, Dota didnt. The whole streaming culture is just different.

TC plays excellent music, I found The Rural Alberta Advantage via him. As far as I can remember he's the only streamer who plays music that I straight up like and listen to on my own lol.

Most dota streamers play relatively mediocre music but at least I can tune it out most of the time.

Yea most dota pros didn't even have donation or sub announcement software setup until recently. Most still don't do that stuff.

That's also true of a lot of other games, though, that have much higher stream #s relative to their playerbase size, though.

It also doesn't explain why the streaming viewerbase for DotA 2 is so insular.

thank fucking god for that

I don't really blame streamers for thanking subs and reading donations and whatnot but man that has ruined a lot of streams out there

It does seem like since dota is so prize-money heavy (and I'm guessing salary-light relative to its popularity but obviously I don't know that) that there's less of a reason to stream/it's not a necessarily part of most dota players incomes.
