1.Diet. The utmost important key point thing is diet, it doesnt matter how much you eat, bad diet = fat, thats it. The biggest example is that I was in Lithuania and everyone over there looks like they all go to gym lol (just for the record lithuanian girls are the top class in europe for me). Everything tastes distinctively different (and delicious) there but you can tell the amount of sugar and salt they use in their diet are almost minimal, say, compare to england......... 2.Exercise. In some countries driving is a must but at least make it the way that you walk as much as possible. I walk at least 30mins a day in the past 10years (well, maybe not that much during weekend but you get the idea). And i run home from work during summer (thats like 6/7km) or during lunch time (3-5km, depends on the day). 3. Diet diet diet, the quality of diet. Like Qbek showing that disgusting amount of mayonnaise over there but i bet that mayonnaise is way much 'healthier' than the one i get in UK - i never eat mayonnaise in uk lol, I wouldnt eat mayonnaise in US either, different food have different ingredients in different places. Similar thing applies to supermarkets, Tesco foods are very different from M&S etc. And then combining the strong concept of diet+exercise. For example Fish & chip is nice but please dont eat it more than once a week lol; peking duck is amazing but please go to gym for the next 3 weeks if you had more than half of it today.... and if you drink a lot like me, when i am in my resting phase my dinner is like this: half a cucumber, 3-5 tomatoes, 1 slice of bread (multiseeded whatever). I dont even go to gym anymore when i started to work, it would need too much of investment to bulk up myself anyway so my aim is to stay athletic when i get older.

and , since I am chocolate addict, junk food and candy makes me feel better. I checked my weight and I still lost like 1.5 kg in that time, maintaining a steady 75 +/-3 for the last 4 years

Unless, you're saying that shoveling snow is the same risk level as other typical activities done in the morning (cross-country skiing, log cutting, whatever). edit: what I'm trying to say is, does the action of shoveling snow have an inherent risk higher than any other activity done in the morning of a cold winter day and if so, by how much? To add, is it shoveling snow that puts you more at risk or simply the circumstances of the weather/time of day and upper-body labour.
