My understanding regarding why tech used to progress much more quickly was due to the downsizing of the transistor - the elementary building block in electronic hardware and digital circuits. However, for according to the laws of physics, you can't continuously downsize things indefinitely and still have them behave. At a certain size, physical matter will begin to obey the laws of quantum mechanics, and we're not quite at the point where we can design/build fully functional quantum computers. As far as the more traditional computer goes, the relative advancement's slowing down quite a lot compared to a number of years ago.

Intel will release its new generation of cpus. Generally I'd say buy for the moment, but it's not a long wait and skylake will have a lot of actually useful/potentially relevant consumer features that currently are limited to the enthusiast platform. It always comes with a new socket, so you can't upgrade from a mobo you could currently buy. The big problem apart from node shrinkage becoming harder and harder to accomplish is the fact that there's basically a monopoly in both the cpu and gpu market since amd isn't capable to compete at anything but the entry level in the consumer space. I'd bet you loads of money that intel could easily produce a significantly better cpu right now, but there's really no reason to. So they just stick to their 5-10% IPC gain per new release cycle.

CPUs make minimal impact on fps unless you buy amd. Any Intel oced above 4ghz is plenty. New 16nm gpu won't be out for at least a year.

a 1 TB HDD is maybe $75 at most, a 1 TB SSD is going to run you $400

I'd rather buy a pc with parts from last year than a new gaming laptop, and save up for an chromebook/ultrabook/macbook air if you really want computing on the go
