Yeah I mean if you get called for an interview, your resume demonstrated that you had the credentials. interviews are really all about ensuring that you're the right person for the company aka do you fit on our team.

this isn't really true in software dev: like I said my interview at my last job had me writing code on a whiteboard for 5 hours lol. Afaik this is relatively standard at other similar large tech companies

you get a lot of candidates in software dev that can't actually program tho

that's not an industry specific problem

you always get candidates that have a padded resume and have great titles and accomplishments on paper but sometimes they actually just suck at their respective job/role
it's kinda like basing skill/credentials of a dota player just based off their dotabuff. the guy may have a high gpm but may not make good decisions in game, play very selfish etc.

actually idk where im going with the dota analogy im awful at this. regardless the point stands.

it might just be more obvious in software dev interviews than average then (ie you can pretty easily ask someone to write code and see whether they can do it)? Or maybe I'm just really ignorant about how non-software positions work lol

I mean http://blog.codinghorror.com/why-cant-programmers-program/ is really well known and discusses people making it in to in person interviews with *no* idea how to solve very simple programming problems. Which is why most companies have 1 or 2 phone interviews first that often start out with simple "can this person write code at all" type questions lol.

(yeah yeah it's easy to make fun of Atwood at least he didn't write some terrible article 15 years ago about how you shouldn't rewrite projects ever thats still cited even though the project the article discusses went on to become Firefox grrrr fuck you spolsky)

Cynicism masquerades as wisdom, but it is the farthest thing from it. Because cynics don’t learn anything. Saying yes is how things grow. Saying yes leads to knowledge. "Yes" is for young people. So for as long as you have the strength to, say yes.

typical cynic.

colbert is smarter and more successful than 99.99% of cynics. why is that? cuz he saids yes to shit. gg no re.

and there are people pretending to be cynics when actually they not skilled at anything in particular and depressed.

As somebody conducting an interview for a candidate today; its both and different companies have different policies between "culture fit" and "skillset fit". The crux of the technical parts of the interview is to more see how the candidate approaches problems and overall ability. The nice thing about the bay area is that you're not going to see many candidates who flat out can't code.

The thing is, many tech companies will reject candidates who aren't "culture fits" regardless of competence

well for my specific industry you can get people that don't know how the process works, and methodology/accuracy is really important - delays that stem from errors cost a lot.
so you just ask them to create a dummy file (a scenario) for submission to a random bank to see if they actually know what they're doing, and note how fast they can create said scenario. it doesn't even have to be a difficult hypothetical client scenario, dealing with a routine file can tell you a lot.
sometimes you'll find that they don't have enough experience even though their cv/resume may say that they've been in this line of work for like 5+ years and can barely do a junior underwriter's job.

the same goes for accounting types, or marketing roles that deal specifically b2b.
I'm really only familiar with software engineering/financial related roles so perhaps basing my conclusion off my personal experiences may be skewed, yet I can't imagine it being any different in other sectors.

apparently a lot of tech companies prefer to hire previous college interns because they know these prior temp employees are almost guaranteed to fit the company culture better, regardless of their performance.

a lot of tech companies will increase their signing bonus when making offers to previous interns for that reason. for example iirc facebook actually doubles their bonus lol

An assumption in the industry is that a sufficiently intelligent person can be brought up to the needed skill level relatively easily but bringing a person from an incompatible personality/culture to one that makes said person work well within the company is not simple

My brother is applying for a different job within his own office but the company procedure is to have a meet and greet for all applicants so they are doing a meet and greet lunch party before his interview with his coworkers LOL

my work isn't quite that bad, but the interview committee during the interview itself has to pretend they dont know you. my last interview was with 2 coworkers and 2 managers that i had worked under for 3+ years. It was very odd to introduce ourselves and pretend we were strangers.
