Look at the wikia or forums for WH. There is the standard fantasy Warhammer and the 40K one which is the insane sci-fi/fantasy version which is more well-known from my experience.

You could just read some of the codexs for the armies and get a feel for them. You can "acquire" pretty easily if you just want to read them. All of them have lore sections which are fun reads and how most people got into 40K before the novels came out. Or just play Dawn of War 2. It has a lot of lore in it and is a really fun RTS.
The nice thing about 40K is that you can sort of start anyplace and it doesn’t matter. Its just space fantasy with chainsaw swords and undead elves.

Yeah, read up on the Eldar, they are a fun race. Powering their tech with the souls of the dead and being general jerks across the galaxy. Plus all their guns shoot throwing starts.
But really ever race is just an awesome sci-fi heavy metal cover with lore to justify their stupid shit.

The Eldar are still "alive" as a race but all their tech is power by their dead souls. They make shit off out bones grown in gardens "seeded" with their corpses. The most of powerful member of their race are barely even "alive" since they have bonded with their armor, which is powered by soul gems. They are not "undead" but they are close. They don't even live on planets any more, but in weird hive ships in space with dumb names.

Its the fantasy setting for Games Work shop. Its a tactical miniatures game where you build and command armies. Its pretty great, but costs a mint to play.

I would like to get into tabletops but I need friends who are interested in the stuff first to actually join in.

It is hard and you have to do stuff yourself if you don’t a local store. I played a lot of table top miniatures games like Flames of War, Warmachine and Warhammer my mid 20s. But there was a local gaming store that had tables, terrain and people to play with. It worked out over time and I meet fun people, but I couldn’t keep it up when I moved to Boston. I always want to make my own table and terrain, but its easier just to play games like Dota and SC2.
And I never got to finish my woodelf army, which bums me out to this day.

i had like 20-25 tyranid pieces and some terrain stuff but me and my friends never played according to the official rules, shit was too complicated
