Reddit is basically a forum still. Discord can function as a forum, though it's kind of an odd setup (have to setup channels for topics). Niche, specialized forums are what are going out of style, basically.
I think content aggregators are going to wind up being regulated heavily within the next decade by both the EU and US, and that will reduce some of their effect. (Especially facebook. Just what we know about them makes it amazing to me that anyone still uses them, and that's with 0 investigation from the US government, just reporters).
The reason they're so much more successful than newspapers is they don't have to pay a fact checking department or create their own content.

There's a lot of misconceptions people seem to have about our reasoning behind the launch of Liquiddota. The initial discussions I had with Riptide and Heyoka never really centered around this site being the next "big" esport site, because to be completely blunt we knew that would never actually happen. We already had very convincing statistics that TLnet was in a massive decline at the time. TL went from around 8-9 million unique monthly visitors sometime in 2013 to around 2-3 million by the time we launched LD in 2014 (and it was still going down fast). To put it simply, forum websites were on their way to being dead.
The biggest motivator for us was more of a staff decision due to butting heads with the SC2 guys constantly about front page space. There was only so much we could do with our small forum on TL, and not having priority on the front page was very frustrating most of the time. We had a lot of plans for LiquidDota, however, we ended up having so many small issues from launch that really halted our progress on a lot of things. We basically lost both riptide and heyoka within the first year of launch. I was also heavily misled on a lot of shit regarding my future at TL around that time so I didn't have the motivation to run things by myself at that point without being promoted to full time.
Regarding the pro team stuff. TLpro basically operated as if we didn't exist. The original iteration of the team was actually cooperative with me and riptide (the 2012-2013 guys before LD launched. You might remember "bulba says" and "mikes mustache" articles, etc), but once TLpro expanded and the other iterations of the team came along we had almost no interaction with them.

What was the motivation behind the launch of liquid legends? That's the one I never really understood

LD is a cozy-ass place with a bunch of familiar names. Most of my favourite places on the internet have been tiny 'exclusive' communities with history. I honestly don't remember being part of an 'alive' forum ever, even the ones I frequented in early 2000s were at most a core of 20-30 people with a rolling caste of other members.
I guess TeamLiquid for the beginning of SC2 was the biggest I'd ever been a part of, come to think of it.
I do think it's kind of a shame that the kind of 'archive of knowledge' of old forums is going away, though. One of my big gripes with discord atm is that you can't have a recurring conversation about something over a decent period of time. It's either being talked about currently or lost to time, so you don't get the feeling of having strategic conversation about the "4 gate" build and have it come and go in relevance over a period of a couple months.

That came to fruition between the league staff and TL higher ups, and it suddenly just popped into existence one day shortly after TL acquired the league team (myself and like 99% of other staff had no idea it was coming before it literally existed lol).
Whatever the reasoning, it didn't help that they lost Fionn to ESPN exactly two weeks after launching

I sometimes reminisce about the old community we had back when tlih was at its peak, around 2013-2015. I remember logging on after 24 hours away to see 70 new pages in this thread sometimes.
Life moves on.

I think there definitely was/is a considerable level of gatekeeping and a boy's club mentality that hurt the growth of the community.
Yes, DotA has declined over the years, but this community definitely declined way harder than Dota in general or other Dota communities.

Aside from reddit what other dota communities outlasted us, or at least declined slower than us? Also I never mentioned the decline of Dota at any point, I was talking about the decline of forum websites.

You're free to think this but there's no objective reasoning behind it.

You need good people for that, and good people tend to keep their secrets or get paid. The fact that TLPro doesn't acknowledge this site as worthy of the brand, speaks volumes about the importance of it to Nazgul and co. Nothing you can do about that.

Also for what it's worth Nazgul isn't really to blame in my opinion. He's in a tough position and has been very honest and vocal internally about how much he appreciates the websites and the staff surrounding them. Even if TLpro threw more money at us to motivate people in leadership positions I still think the site would have met the same end at some point.

LD best tl for me. Though without ootgd I don't think I'd come back as much as I do. Maybe for big tourneys to take advantage of the calendar or even just for ti.
Even though it haven't played dota in 2or so years, it's just the greatest eSports game in the world. But like professional football, the pro gamers, although being way above amateurs, can still produce incredibly boring games. If the best play against each other and innovate on the spot, it's incredible.
And unlike football the rules are effing complex and not approachable at all.

I mean, i would bet the population decline here tracks pretty closely with the decline of web forums in general.
I sincerely doubt that there is anything that any of the moderator/admins/content creators here could have done to combat those trends.

I checked now and that's very false they are very much not alive. My bad. I guess reddit just ate all the forum and similar communities.

So I decided to check out how this place is doing
How funny is it that you are literally discussing the death forums. And that I recognise literally all names.
And reddit is not a forum at all, how you even have a discussion on that fucking website beats me

hey man good to see you! hope you have been well these last few years

That's a pretty exciting life, being honest.

http://www.dota2.com/diretide Diretide 2020. Yay!
Most surprising thing is that they're bringing chests and keys back. That has to be over 5 years since the last time we've seen new chests and keys, right?
