"Losing makes me so motivated. So I'm kinda happy we lost our first game."
EG.Arteezy at WEC
Today HotBid talked to Arteezy following their first series against Vici Gaming, about where the team is now and how they see themselves relative to the Chinese teams. Also Arteezy talked a lot about how much he loves China.
Hi Artour, it's been a while since we last talked. Last time we talked was TI. What has changed since?
We've lost every game and that's about it.
You guys aren't doing well lately.
We're winning against Americans but not Chinese.
Why, what's different?
I dunno, we're not prepared yet. We're still practicing with Fear even though he's been our coach and he's been sitting behind us and watching our games, we still not synced in yet. Of course it's more than just Fear, but it's everyone not connecting as one.
What do you think of this tournament thus far?
This tournament so far? Well the crowd turnout hasn't been good but I've been told because it's a work day. But yeah, it's China, what can I say?
What can you say? What don't you like about China?
I dunno, the traffic is really really bad, the weather is really really bad, I don't know what's going on half the time. I just walk around.
What, you don't want to move here?
No, definitely not. I remember I said after TI I wanted to come here and train in China. But now that I'm here, no way man. Absolutely not.
Why not?
I mean look at this place.
What's wrong with it though?
The traffic, the weather, the girls are good though. There are actually a lot of good girls. I was doing some scouting and there was definitely some good girls.
Maybe thats why you guys aren't winning?
The girls?
Less scouting and more practice!
Maybe you're right.
You got to go home for a little bit. Has life changed now that you guys are all world famous?
Not really, but sometimes I get noticed when I go outside like when I go downtown Vancouver I get noticed a lot by random people. It's pretty cool.
What about PPD being in the NY times? You jealous?
Did you see his comment about him losing patience or whatever? Like in the article it quotes "PPD began to lose patience with his teammates." It was me.
What happened?
The game was like over, at least to me. So I kept running down middle and just dying.
Did you guys win?
No we just lost.
So that was your fault?
Yeah it was my fault.
You guys seem to have made it. Do you think there's a sense of complacency this year?
Maybe? Like right after TI I though it was pretty good with our standin with Mason. But then I realized we should always aim for first. So I was complacent for a bit but I just said "no, let's just get first".
You guys scared of the Chinese teams at all? They seem to be getting a better now.
I think the only team we're scared of is LGD because we've never played them before. I think we already know what Newbee & VG are like. So LGD is the real foreigner for us.
Well they changed a lot of their players. But all those Chinese teams seem to retire the old guys, bring in the new guys.
Yeah, Fy came out of nowhere and he got 2nd place. So, Fy-God.
Give me your thoughts on all the new western teams.
Secret Team - I think is missing that power, I dunno. Secret Team is really good on paper something's still missing I feel. Team Tinker - seems like a better liquid. They have better players but wins don't happen. Na`Vi - Well they haven't played anyone good, all online teams plus that random CDEC team. So I don't know if they're any good yet, but I think they're definitely better than the old Na`Vi.
They seem happy now.
Yeah, they're just going through the period where they're happy. When losses happen we'll see what happens. So yeah once they play a good team, we'll see how they do.
Give me something on the new Alliance.
New Alliance? I wanna say they lost their best player, but they're winning right now so you never know. I always thought S4 single-handedly carried that team but you never know.
And what about you guys?
I don't think much has changed. With fear we have a bit more versatility, so it could be better or worse, I actually don't know.
So TI5 is a long while away, but everyone seems to base their plans around it. What's your plans this time, what would you do differently to last year?
Differently? I think we should prepare more than 1 strategy. Because at TI our strategy was, Mason goes to safe lane, I go to mid lane, Universe goes to offlane. And there's no versatility, there's nothing like dual lane offlane, trilane offlane, it's always the same players in each lane. So obviously we're going to strive to be more versatile. And also practicing should go better, we know we're throwing games.
I watch your stream. You guys play an interesting way, you play like you don't give a fuck about anything else that happens. Is it because you guys try so hard in game that when you stream pubs its like whatever?
You can say that I guess. No, I don't really try in scrims. Recently I've been so demotivated, but losing makes me so motivated. So I'm kinda happy we lost our first game. I mean it sucks losing but it wakes everyone up and reignites that fire you had inside of you.
Give me some bold statements or predictions.
EG will get top 2 for next TI and we will be better than Cloud9 for sure.
But you guys already placed higher than Cloud9 so that's not a bold prediction.
Yeah but it's different rosters now so...
You think Cloud9 is better without Sing?
I think they had personal issues so it's going to be better. Like old Na`Vi and new Na`Vi. With new people coming into the mix it'll be new connections.
You can't name anyone out of EG, but i'm going to give you some rapid fire questions. Best Mid?
Fata.
Best safelane carry?
EternalEnvy.
Are you gonna name everyone from C9?
It's because I just watched them play.
Best offlane?
Yao.
Best support duo?
Fy, do I have to say Fenrir? I don't think he's that good. I'll just say MMY and LaNm.
Well you can give me one of each.
Then Fy and MMY.
So you like the Chinese supports? Why?
Yeah. They're way better. I think the cores in china are weaker compared to the western scene but the supports are really strong.
Why, what's different?
I guess all the supports in China have been playing different roles for a long time and then they switch to support role. And with support role you need to really know the other roles to adapt to what to do on the map.
So you don't think PPD & Zai could play cores?
No, I think they can. Zai could play a really good core, cause he played core in HoN. PPD could play a good core, he just needs time.
You guys don't seem to like the bus conditions, what did you think about it?
Oh my god. We were told it was a 2 hour ride and it turned into 4 hours I think. It was miserable, I hate this place.
Did you enjoy the Pringles that you bought?
It wasn't even Pringles, i don't know what it was. There was Pringles next to Lays Stacks and I ended up picking the most random one. I don't know what's wrong with me. It was the first.
Have you eaten chicken feet yet? We're gonna go to a restaurant and eat chicken feet.
Ok, if we lose I'll do it.
I'm serious, I'll go with you. We'll eat some chicken feet, we'll eat some ants.
What kind of ants?
The insect kind.
I know, I mean like fire ants?
No, regular ones. The fire ants cost extra.
Wait, is that a real thing? You serious?
Yeah. We're gonna eat some blood soup. They take blood and turn it into cubes like tofu.
What??? Charlie told me about a vodka equivalent here.
Bai Jiu?
yeah, that stuff, i want to try it after we win.
Alright, you guys have one match left.
Hopefully more.
Give me your shoutouts and callouts.
Shoutout to my sponsors Monster Energy, HyperX, Razer, Astro Gaming, CyberpowerPC, Need for Seat, and BenQ.
Shoutout to the fans in China. Shoutout to the fans in the western scene cheering the western teams on. And calling out Liquid`Bulba.
Well he's on Team Tinker now, it's Tinker.Bulba now.
Wait did he get released?
Yeah.
Team Tinker Bulba, you suck man. Learn more heroes.
Oh yeah? He sucks as a support?
No, I'm just kidding he's a good guy. Good player.
He's leading his team now, he's a captain.
Yeah he captained Liquid at TI as well. He almost carried them to top 8. It was close.
It was very close
Lost arrow.
That was the biggest throw I've ever seen.
Dota 2 man. that's all i can say.
That was the Qojqva 40-20 on OD. DDZ 3-1 on invoker at like 10min and we lost.
Dota 2, that's all I can say.
Alright, thank you very much. We'll talk again I'm sure. Probably, maybe if you qualify to ESL one, we'll eat somewhere in NY.
Oh, I'm down. I heard NY has really good food. On you?
Ahhh, I dunno man. You guys finished 3rd.
What? I got no money.
What? I got no money.
I got nothing.
You're taking me out. I'll pick the place though.
Charlie's going to pay for it.
Ok, we'll get charlie to pay for it. I'm sure his super sick manager salary will cover it. Alright thank you, and good luck in the next round.

Hotel and venue internet normally suck super bad, just saying. I wouldn't waste time uploading shit. Maybe once they out of China.

ya becauses he wants to share his philosophy on dota strategy in a casual interview with the public
lets be honest rtz knows more than he lets on he wouldn't be a 1v1 and farming god otherwise

Dude if rtz actually drinks some of that stuff he's just be blown the fuck out hahaha

Pretty accurate. 1v1 mastery is a completely different ballpark from drafting strategy and how to achieve sidelane objectives. So weird that these guys either get top 2 or flame out instantly, with no middle ground. I also think it's interesting that he claims there was internal issues with C9 that are fixed by Sing leaving. Sing and Aui seemed to be good bros, I heard Envy and Aui got along, and pie openly admits that he makes mistakes and is open to criticism. Not sure where the conflict would come from
Arteezy is awesome :D With all these roster changes, EG will probably be the team I'm rooting for going forward. Hope they start playing world class Dota 2 by the time the tournaments start for real.

Baijiu in terms of % is not stronger than vodka, it's really not that bad, maybe the cheapest (although you wont ever find for 5 RMB as he said, not in any store, lol, minimum 50) is super bad.
I don't like baijiu, but it's not THAT bad, just don't mix it though, that is not how it's supposed to be drank, you take small shots. The worst baijiu I had though, I got at a chinese wedding, they told me it's best baijiu in all of China and costs 1000 RMB per bottle, which is quite expensive, maybe 200 USD, but it was just bad
But damn, I just lost all respect for Arteezy, with how ignorant he is about the world, instantly stating how everything is worse, after never having been to China before, such an ignorant prick, I will forever be miserable whenever this guy has success, what an asshole.
Basicly he is saying that stuff are different than at home and it's hard to get used to, so it sucks, how can anyone be so ignorant about the world?? I don't get it....
Baiju is the shit and I like people who enjoy it. The first time I had it I could smell it across my apartment when my Chinese roommate opened the bottle. I'll never forget that.

You are the one generalizing his comments about China to "the world". For example he said he loved Cologne.
Going to a place where no one speaks your language in bad weather and traffic makes for a shitty experience, pretty sure complaining about it and saying that you don't want to live there is all right. Kinda like when he said he wouldn't move back to Uzbekistan...

I think Sing tries even harder than EE and I feel like he was really disappointed with their TI finish. He's good enough to aim for the top, and let's be honest, C9 wasn't good enough to be championship contender, they always ended up destroyed in the finals or semis by Navi/Alliance/EG

It's not that terrible, come on. If you grew up in a Brazilian favela or in the slums around Port-au-Prince then Hangzhou would be a great place.

?
C9 won tournaments and had the best overall results for the year out of any Western team. Admittedly it's highly likely EG would have done better had they been around as long, but neither Na'vi nor Alliance were as successful and, funnily enough, both did worse at TI.
I have no idea why so many people dismiss C9. It's really weird.

Honestly, in most areas the major Chinese cities at the mid-east at the coast are as modern as any city in Canda, Hangzhou is also very modern, and would also be nice even if you are from a major Canadian city, you just have to get used to the different things, and approach the place with an open mind, it obviously takes time to get used to.

So you're saying people shouldn't be allowed to express their opinions of things unless they have experienced it for at least 5-6 months? And they aren't allowed to form a first impression? Ok Mr Thoughtpolice...
Hangzhou during this time is probably gonna be very stuffy and hot, I know when I went back to China during August (specifically to Hangzhou) it was so fucking stuffy coz not only is it hot, it's very humid. That's very hard to get used to if you're from Vancouver. Also yeah, Hangzhou is probably one of the nicest cities to be in, but I guarantee the weather is not comparable to Canada. There's just too much smog and shit going on. It's not about whether the city is modern or not.
And are you really gonna deny that the traffic in Hangzhou sucks?

It's not that terrible, come on. If you grew up in a Brazilian favela or in the slums around Port-au-Prince then Hangzhou would be a great place.

They are not good drivers, no. That part is true, well don't take the numbers so litteral, also it's not THAT warm anylonger, a month ago yes, right now it's not too bad, but of course the weather is different. The point is that he forms an opinion without having any clue. Also, there is almost no smog in that area right now, that is mostly in the North right now, Hangzhou is a relatively green city, it's nothing like Shanghai or Beijing in terms of smog. I believe(but don't quote me on this, I know other major cities north of there like Wuxi and Suzhou did it) that they banned the use of scooters and motorcycles, specifically for the air.

Not sure where the conflict would come from
I think Sing tries even harder than EE and I feel like he was really disappointed with their TI finish. He's good enough to aim for the top, and let's be honest, C9 wasn't good enough to be championship contender, they always ended up destroyed in the finals or semis by Navi/Alliance/EG
C9 looked really good in some games, but totally awful in others. They're obviously good and can beat anyone, but it isn't like DK or EG or Na'vi where you -expect- them to beat anyone. My two cents, at least.
I blame Fear... EG sucked with him before... EG was at its best (by far) when Fear was gone (a fucking standin came in and they rose to the best team in the world in a matter of months.. or at least top 3 if you go by TI).. and now EG sucks again now with him back...

Correlation is not causation dude.
I'm not so sure.. Dota is at a new level, I don't think he can compete at the level Dota is now. He has always been frustratingly average.
Top teams can't afford carrying average players. His past doesn't matter. Have to build your team to win the next TI not "we have to keep him because we owe it to him." or "We have a history." Shit doesn't matter. If you want to win TI and big tournaments, that is.

I agree with all of your points other than going from current performance to the idea that he is now mediocre and needs to be replaced. I don't have a very strong opinion about Fear as a player but I'm pretty sure he is better than Mason and it would have been a bad deal for the fans to not bring him back.
Give him a little time, if he sucks down the road I'll be right there with you.

why would you blame fear ? Mason didnt carry EG to wins , it was the team who did it , they didnt play a good TEAM game when they lost , saying they were mediocre with him is a joke , as they won so many games and rose to be a top team WITH HIM , then they lost him but stood strong with a standin ,they have a good team , they do not Suck , and they will be back in shape once they start practicing hard again . also note that its possible for them to be a medioce team with Fear/Mason/Sylar/Burnning , it depends on the Meta/other teams/team mental state , see past TI winners [A]/iG who fell off after wining TI while being the best in their time.(keeping the same rosters) you need to look at the bigger picture. one last thing they won alot with Fear , they did not "Eg sucked with him before"

The best results out of the year? Maybe if you mean 2014 only, but you likely don't since you're saying SADBOYS' lack of longevity hurts them.
Discounting random small tournaments like Bigpoint Battle and Eizo Cup, C9 had a gold, 5 silvers, and a bronze in the season leading up to TI4. Na'vi had 5 golds, 2 silvers, and 2 bronzes. Alliance had 4 golds, 3 silvers, and 3 bronzes. Empire had 3 golds, 3 silvers, and 2 bronzes. Fnatic had 2 golds, 5 silvers, and 2 bronzes. EG had 4 golds, a silver, and a bronze (and I'm only counting SADBOYS roster, with the roster with Fogged and Jeyo EG gets a couple more silvers). And C9's one gold was MLG, which was with rtz in.
This means that in premiere tournaments, C9 had the worst record of any western team with a direct invite. The thing is, C9 was getting all their silvers closer to TI while teams like Na'vi, Alliance, Empire, and Fnatic had fallen off and gotten most of their results earlier in the season. So C9 was the second most consistent western team right before TI (after EG), so their placing made sense.
But the person you're responding to is right (well, sort of, Sing was definitely kicked). C9 in the '13-'14 season is king of silvers.
What about PPD being in the NY times? You jealous?
Did you see his comment about him losing patience or whatever? Like in the article it quotes "PPD began to lose patience with his teammates." It was me.
This made me laugh. Like, NY Times trying to avoid naming names, Arteezy's like "nope, I pissed off PPD".

QFT... WAit, it seems they can win with Fear! Such enlightened comment.
I think people forget that rtz is still only like 17 or 18 years old. Thats still really young so give the dude a break. You act like you guys were the most mature 18 year olds on the planet or something and never made a mistake.

Kuroky had some typically wise comments about Arteezy during one of those long interviews at the euro hub. Basically said that he's young and has to find his way as a professional; especially challenging being someone his age who is entering the scene just as real money is starting to flow in.
It's fine to criticize Arteezy when he's acting outside the bounds of what is considered professional for a competitor. But he does deserve slack for being a kid (18 now, just graduated high school). Almost old enough to drink in Canada!
"What, I can feed for my country but I can't drink?"
