I personally think fanatic doesn't deserve a direct invite

Stability together with pretty good overall results since TI3.
Why would they not deserve it?

because they haven't actually done anything notable aside from winning that captains draft tournament, which was yea a captains draft
I mean I'm not even sure I would give empire a direct invite
were talking about a direct invite to the biggest tournament of the year,I don't get why you guys think teams that didn't actually win a decent tournament through the year and just did ok deserve a invite
if the team is good they are going to emerge through the qualifier i dont see what the deal is

But that's wrong, Fnatic have done well ever since TI3, they haven't won any notable tournaments but they have landed a good deal of second places and overall done really well compared to the competition.

Stability + overall good results = of course they will be invited.

Yeah I'm hearing a ton of people saying they couldn't get them. I guess you gotta suffer with the general population or go VIP (which is ridiculously expensive).

I don't think roster stability and "ok results" should equal a direct invite to the biggest thing of the year

Maybe they should start doing for TI what they did for the Olympics here. Some kind of lottery.

I decided against even trying to get a ticket this year. My PhD is sadly at a crucial stage and I can't afford to take extra time off on top of the family holiday (that by the gods I will need so badly). Next year though I'll be hammering on the refresh button along with everyone else. X-D

I edited just like you. ;]

But yes, my point was that it was contradictory to say that 11 invites is good and then not be able to offer 11. Yango offered a reply that at least makes some sense (i.e. "the specific invite is irrelevant: it's better to have arbitrary invitees rather than qualifier spots in some regions purely because otherwise unreasonable fans would get upset") and as an argument for why Valve are doing it I can kind of see it. However, I don't see an argument for why it's good. Perhaps it's a business necessity to pander to unreasonable fools but that it's something anyone here should be in favour of? Eh. . .

But w/e, TI is going to rock and it doesn't affect me at all.

Qualifiers are bs for a number of reasons.

If you think of it this way. The qualifier is just another tournament. Does winning that tournament mean any more than the other tournaments in actually determining skill? Or more specifically, does winning that one tournament mean more than winning 3 other tournaments? Why should it?

On another level, very many Dota teams play well for a couple of weeks, or for a single patch. So you might be the best team in the world the week of that qualifier tournament, but what have they done to prove that they will have a chance the next week?

And on yet another level. The International having a lot of invites makes the other tournaments throughout the year more valuable. Winning MLG, Dreamhack, whatever. Almost guarantees you an invite. Without that, teams won't care as much about proving their worth throughout the year.

The qualifiers exist for those teams that haven't done enough to deserve to be there. The ones where it's difficult to say who you should be cutting and who you should be inviting.

The reason is that TI is held once a year. Teams usually change more than once a year, unless they are Na'Vi or Alliance. There's no guarantee that the team that won events X Y and Z prior to TIwhateverthefuck is the same team that won events beforehand. That's not even mentioning the very real possibility that a team that tears it up earlier in the year can completely fly off the handle for unclear reasons. So, then, your invites might not actually be the best teams. That's why TI allows for 5 qualifier-based slots, which are a way for a team who's just coming on the up-and-up to get a chance to prove their worth.

Or, to put it in the bluntest possible terms: it gave LGD.cn a chance to play in TI3 last year, which they definitely deserved based on their performance at the event. Furthermore, it will give Liquid a chance to come back from FLUFF this year, though it's a stretch to say they'll do extremely well. So, now: why shouldn't LGD.cn have gotten the chance to prove themselves that way? Why shouldn't Liquid get the chance this year?

It's also kind of laughable that you think that those other tournaments aren't more than valuable enough on their own merits. Money is money, wins bring fans and sponsors, and the kind of person who will play a game for a living is the kind of person who likes winning for its own sake.
1. I don't see the point you're making in the first paragraph. If a team that wins tournament X Y Z isn't the same team anymore, they don't get the invite. If they start playing like utter shit for a long enough period, they probably won't get it either (if there are enough strong teams out there). Either way, there is no point here, as this can happen with qualified teams as well. And it's more likely to happen with qualified teams because they haven't demonstrated consistent results or stability.

2. LGD got a punishment, the qualifier was an easy way for them to be punished. If the qualifiers didn't exist, LGD would have been punished in another way. If they didn't exist, maybe they wouldn't be so strict about team rosters. We don't know, either way, the qualifier system doesn't exist so teams who would have been invited can drop players and then play in the qualifier. You're also making it sound like I don't think there should be any qualifiers, which isn't the case. I said what they are there for, and they serve that purpose. LGD changed their roster, in the eyes of Valve, that means it's questionable if they deserve to be there because they don't know if they would perform as well as they did to get the invite, thus they go to the quals (I don't really believe this, but that's more in line with why they are in the qualifier other than 'being made an example of', which is what I actually believe happened).

3. Learn to read. I didn't say that tournaments become valueless. I said they become devalued. If you have listened to any player talk about the scene for the past 3 years you know how important TI is for them and how little some of them claim (I won't say they 100% believe it themselves but it's what they say) to care about other tournaments. The fact that winning any of these major tournaments gets them into TI is enormous.

1. What if, say, Liquid's switch-up had made them into the best team in the West? What if LGD.cn's switchup made them into Team Dog food? It's impossible to tell without events right before TI. You could use other tournaments to decide that, which would either ignore team shifts or would (in your words) "devalue" tournaments that happen earlier in the year.

2. Argument from ignorance is a logical fallacy. Qualifiers do work, and they don't require some strange "punishment" that would have to involve reducing a team's chance to win the tournament.

3. Well, I can say they'd definitely resign from other tournaments if they needed time to go to the qualifiers, but really, they'd do that anyway.

"ok results" ? The only teams with better results than Fnatic since TI3 are Alliance and Na'Vi. I don't think this qualifies as "ok results" and personally, I think this does warrant an invite.

invites are always relative to other teams. you have to look at all teams and see where they stand in comparission to the rest of the field. a team like fnatic is in a slump right now but they have shown in the past (near past, like last 6 month) that they can play at top level consistently, thats why they are a secure invite and you have a very high chance that the team will do well.
qualifiers give more of a snapshot, they can show which team is strong in the moment but that might change very quickly and when the actual event happens you might have other teams in their prime than when the qualifiers happend.

a good example of this would be sigma.int at the moment or empire early last year. teams who played absolutely amazing for a period of time but then disappeared quickly. those teams might win a qualifier but dont do very good in the actual tournament.
things like mufc are the outliners. they might happen, but mostly they dont. just look at how good the qualified teams did the last years. except tongfu at ti2, no team won anything.

At some point I hope Valve changes the tournament format a little. I still don't think a double-elimination bracket that provides no winner's side advantage in GF doesn't make too much sense but that's a smaller complaint in light of the early loser's rounds being best of 1's. Yes I understand there's logistical issues and a schedule to keep but right now the difference between 4th to 5th in the group stage is one win away from making the money versus one loss away from $0.

Which reminds me, paying the bottom 8 $0 is still a little extreme. Yeah they get free room, board, and a chance to win $1mil but even most tier 2 LAN tournaments these days have some kind of compensation to teams.

Stability + overall good results = of course they will be invited.

idk i disagree
I don't think roster stability and "ok results" should equal a direct invite to the biggest thing of the year
If anything the qualifier should be expanded and teams that are clearly a cut above should be given some sort of shorter path to qualifying as opposed to some bozo team but thats about it
fuck freebie invites i wanna see blood, sweat and tears

"ok results" ? The only teams with better results than Fnatic since TI3 are Alliance and Na'Vi. I don't think this qualifies as "ok results" and personally, I think this does warrant an invite.

both C9 and EG have better results as they actually won something
I guess you mean EU teams, but I consider C9 eu I guess since they have 3 players there, not sure how that's going to be handled
u gotta farm
