I guess I just dont see the point.

If by intelligently you dont mean making the game better then what do you mean be intelligently

there are millions of changes that could make dota more complex, but what would be the point if it isnt furthering the goal of improving the game.

I NEVER implied that games cant be improved. I said that people have different ideas of what is fun. huge difference man :/

again, what do you mean by "intelligently" there? because if it isnt making the game better then I have no idea of what you mean by intelligent changes.

Enhancing the aspects of dota that provide a sense of reward for most players.
I feel that conversations about changes should take place in the context of those aspects.

maybe im just being a dick but I really dont know what snomans getting at. which feels weird because im on the same page as him like 99 times out of 100 on this forum.

This might be more blog material but:

Most really popular games spawn multiple spinoffs or sequals. For example, Diablo 2 spawned Torchlight 2, D3, PoE, and a bunch of other ARPGs (sure you could say Diablo 1 was the original, whatever). MOST of the games tend to take a "casualization" route where they isolate what they believe was the best, most unique and fun element of the game and then try to make that more accessible and available to players. Which makes sense, after a fashion. But there is often that one game that instead takes the game, and pushes it in a much more complex direction. "Harcore-izing" the game if you will. PoE is that game for ARPGs.

Now, regardless of the true origination of ARTSs, Dota is clearly the first one that was big enough to be it's own game. And there have been unending casualizations of the game to the point where there are now casualizations of casualizations of casualizations of the game. But nobody has ever tried to take it to the next level of complexity.

So I ask you guys, what would an even more hardcore version of Dota look like? Is it possible to make a game deeper and more rewarding in a manner that also retains the core identity at all? A game that could still be called the "spiritual successor" of Dota, but even more complex?

I'm actually kinda inclined to say no but I got to thinking about it and now I want to hear other's opinions.

Diablo 1 was more of a ripoff of nethack and roguelike games. This is just game evolution.

Actually, the more complex version of Dota is probably the WC3 custom map EotA. More complex armor/attack type interactions, ability scaling based on stats, much more complicated maps, multiple victory conditions and traditional RTS elements. Players can spend money to upgrade creeps, spawn different, more advanced or specialized creeps, build towers and even change the pathing and composition of waves. For instance, in Dota terms, you could build a tower that would redirect Radiant bottom creeps through the jungle and into mid.

Man, that map was so fuckin' good.

Oh yeah I vaguely remember playing something like that a billion years ago.

Creeps were asymmetrical from the start too right? like there were races with diff creeps and such?

I think so? On the default map, one team was in the top left, the other in the bottom right. And I think it was set up so that the 'short' lane (and there were like five lanes) would push by default. So top left-->bottom right would push, and bottom right-->top left would push. And then the alternate victory conditions were in the middle.

Oh yeah; one of the other things EotA had was multiple currencies. So you could buy extra armor, damage or stats for yourself with a currency that was only earned by 1) spending gold on buildings that passively generated it 2) taking objectives or 3) killing heroes. Each team had basically mini-bases at each of what in Dota would be tower locations, which could each support a given number of buildings which would have various effects.

90% of game ideas using rts view ever were already made as a wc3 custom, and probably done better than most devs could do it

Don't you guys remember every game of EOTA was named 'EOTA>DOTA'... clearly the superior game.

Well, it was. It was much more ambitious and most of the systems were really, really good. But it had lots of stability issues, and some balance problems, and the learning curve was ridiculously steep (even though it had pretty good bots!). And even though there were three or four factions, each one only had like six or eight heroes. So it wasn't as good for mass gaming as Dota's forty-something heroes and multiple game modes, reputation for good balance (which at that point was wholly undeserved in hindsight) and generally bug-free play.

Yeah I remember those days, but the thruth is that DotA was so unpolished/buggy/imbalanced, that me as a heavy solo ladder undead player really enjoyed playing EotA. True that EotA was just as imba and bugged but still I've liked playing it as it was simply much more complex. In the end I think that DotA became more popular on bnet due to the simple fact that it was easier to get into it and the player base consisted more of casual players who didin't really want to spend countless games learning the mechanics of it. Of course there are other factors like that DotA had more frequent updates, more heroes etc. but regardless EotA was a nice custom game and makes me wonder now what would have happened if someone or some some dedicated bunch of people tried to develop it yet then instead of letting it die.

honestly AA's ult is so good that it's legit broken

anyway, I need to know - Bristle vs BH, both solo, Bristle has a sentry given to him by the support. How should the lane go?

depends on starting items and shit but in general BH would have to press his advantage extremely early like sub lv3. If the lane goes even or BB gets ahead at all by lv3, everything after he's probably going to rape BH. People are so scared of bristle but you really have to bully him out early when you have the chance, otherwise, you're SOL.
