For instance, in Dota terms, you could build a tower that would redirect Radiant bottom creeps through the jungle and into mid. Man, that map was so fuckin' good. Ability scaling is so shit though, that's how LoL works and it is one of the worst aspects of that game, it leads to even more ridiculous snowballing. Think about Zeus ulti, that shit is pretty annoying. Now think about Karthus ulti (which is identical but scales), it's almost impossible to beat a team with a fed mid karthus in LoL, he'll use ulti and your whole team is sub 50% hp. Get ridiculous enough and he starts to oneshot supports with it. Nah, thank god for non scaling abilities, which lets there be proper balance between lategame rightclickers and early game spammers.

Have you actually played LoL? A Karthus would need 1100 AP to one-shot a level 10 Soraka if Magic Resistance didn't exist in the game. I've been on both ends of the 100-0 refresher-Aghs Zeus ult, but that doesn't happen in League. Follow-up: What is Aghs if not ability scaling?

There's something called radical dynamic asymmetry, one of the fundamental design differences between DotA and LoL. It is precisely due to the fact that "spells scale" that LoL is unable to create heroes that vary vastly at different points in the game. Due to the scaling on casters, it becomes far more difficult to create heroes that vary in power at differing stages in the game. As such, hero design becomes somewhat stagnant as both overall power levels and game scaling need to be comparable for heroes of similar roles. The direct result of this, along with the lack of creativity in map design, is the constant mirroring of lane setups with match-ups between similar heroes in similar roles arrayed against each other in set lanes. This, by itself, along with the need for heroes to remain constantly similarly powered, leads to what is seen as a very stale and boring metagame of essentially the same laning phase and team composition. While this has the advantage of making the game far simpler to understand and observe as you can quickly judge out very predictable lanes and matchups, with the game state being extremely easy to comprehend as you can directly compare heroes in the lanes or simply glance at the gold counter to see which team is ahead, this also leads to stagnation in the meta and the exacerbation of the snowball effect. If the lanes all involve similar heroes scaling in the same way lined up against a mirrored lineup that performs essentially the same way, then any advantage a team gets is transformed into a direct advantage in both laning and combat and thus can be extended to further your advantage. With such linear and consistent scaling, you are ahead once you gain an advantage with which you can very easily become further ahead. This is why I believe linear ability scaling is an immensely uncreative concept in origin and leads to an extremely boring and snowbally meta. However, the recent changes on certain champions to have AP actually change utility ratios as well has been quite interesting to me and I'm looking forward to how that develops. The comparison to subs is actually very apt. In many cases, it is indeed simply ability scaling similar to what LoL would implement. If you look at the oldest Aghs upgrades such as Zeus and Furion, Lich, Leshrac, etc. It is simply making a number bigger. However with the more recent aghs addons DotA has been trying to avoid the path of boring ability scaling. Look at more "modern" aghs upgrades on heroes like Tiny, Lion, and Tinker. Icefrog has rejected the path of boring ability scaling and is instead trying to make aghs an item that significantly changes a hero's functionality and flavor.

Veigar on the other hand, his full build with masteries gives like 800 AP, then you take the AP he gains from killing creeps/champs.... = Dead champions. Or you could go back like pre-S1 where having a PD and BT before the enemy meant you had a Satanic on every single auto attack (I have no idea what these items are like now though) and you could poop on everyone
