The odd hour of a saturday night. I did some quick read on the trading stuffs from this patch earlier and here is a short summary (i was so damn confused as well).
Playing diretide 2013 will only get you event items, essenses and recipes:
1.Essenses that you can use them for crafting recipes.
2.Among the dropped recipes there are 2 special ones which are Cursed item and Cursed courier recipes, in which you will use shadow essense for them (shadow essense is about 0.75euro on steam market, compared to their 20+e price right before diretide patch). Cursed courier requires you to have certain unboxed item from the chest in order to craft it.
The replacement of strange item system:
1.Mods from now on will be called gems, + Show Spoiler +(along with all the courier effects/hero animation/tournament view count etc are all gems now)
2.Chisel for giving (any) item a slot to put in gem (currently it is bugged, it is supposed to be give you 5 uses like the Hammer, http://dev.dota2.com/showthread.php?t=113450), the chisel for courier is called Brand; Hammer for taking gems out from any item (it doesn't destroy the item but it will destroy the courier if you used it on courier). Notably you can buy chisel/hammer from the chest/store/market or you can craft them by using recipe (random commons+ a certain designated common).
3.Hence beware when you trade for something nowadays because you may get some empty slot item without the actual effect/mod.
Additionally, from now on items from chests will be strange/come with mod (percentage based or something like that), alot of new mods are in the market atm and i don't even know where can i check them out. You can now find mod and recipe/chisel/hammer chest. I think that covered everything new from this patch in trading (which is huge). Also, from now on you can craft com/uncom/rare/mythical even promotional Genuine items (the required items in the recipe can quite intense lol).

If we assume that Valve is going to implement community made custom maps in the future how can they monetize that? Doesn't Blizzard try selling the better maps or something for SC2? I quit before WoL beta ended so I'm not sure how that works. That doesn't seem like a very good or a very Valve thing to do.

It's not easy.
You need Undying to get to Level 30 above maybe even level 20 above.
You just a PA,Sven,Troll/etc and buy mass bf/daedalus and start hitting Undying since cleave damage goes through armor resistance + amplify 30% from Undying ulti.
Without Undying, you can't achieve that.
There was a bug yesterday in Diretide when I went in my 5 stack gang.
We joined game and the opponent all just dc.
And all of us including the opponent get items without finishing Diretide.
Then we went another game and see whether it was a bug.
Turns out the opponent all just dc.
All of us got items.
I guess Valve fixed it already.
Sigh.
No more free items.

Oh Lord, I just watched an ancient replay from my old days where it was totally legit to go rapier on clinkz after you BOUGHT AN AEGIS WITH 3 CHARGES for the price of an assault cuirass.
