Think the people that actually played beta back then all were saying how shit diretide was. The fuss must have either been before people want items even though diretide gave shit items or from people that weren't around.

If I had to guess at a random percentage, I'd say 73% of the fuss was people wanting to get in on whatever the latest Twitch meme was. Getting in on the ground floor of the new Kappa, if you will. The groundswell of enthusiasm was driven by circlejerking and desire for items rather than any enthusiasm for actually playing the mode.

It is more probably that the people say to themselves "If I have fun now, I will still be bored tomorrow. If I do the item thing now, I will still have my items if I don't have fun"
Human psychology is predictable in a way. If we didn't think of retaining something, we would not have gone beyond beasts that just do what makes sense at the time.

Roshan will get a lot of damage and dire very fast.
