Wow, so shocking For me it has less to do with Diretide sucking, and more to do with tryhards every single game trying to break the record despite having 0 chance. because they want hats.
Which is why diretide sucks

I think people who want to go for records in pubs are fun. There's an extra satisfaction to killing them and watching them get mad.

I didn't play diretide last year but from the instructions I assumed it was something along the lines of two teams competing for candy or something. To my surprise it involved going to the enemy fountain and watching our pudge fountain-kill their heroes repeatedly. WTF is this shit?

Until custom maps are available in Dota 2 I have little hope for the custom modes. The 2 which Valve have made kind of show that they don't know how to make a fun mode. And possibly worse they've made Diretide in a fashion where winning the game doesn't require a team playing well, this is just beyond stupid.
The problem is that they're just some weird rules slapped ontop of the normal game. And even those rules, aren't that interesting. Even just releasing an official LOD would be better.

Anyone notice after games they ask you to rate things other than your enjoyment now? I dunno if they had this before and i just never noticed. The one i noticed was "how was your cooperation with your teamates". Does how you rate stuff actually affect anything?

You think you have server issues? I had a 5 stack that eventually found a server for AP, only to join a server with 2 random teams playing diretide. GG volvo.

That is how the games are designed, making a fun mode competitive (in an un-fun way) makes it less fun. Thus 'they don't know how to make a fun mode'.
I have a hard time believing anyone would be playing these modes if they had the option of playing some of the more popular WC3 custom maps instead. It's a departure from normal Dota, of course it's interesting in that regard. But if people had the option to play pudge wars instead... it wouldn't be close. And pudge wars wasn't even a very popular map.

Nobody's trying to break the records in pubs, they're just trying to max out their items.
Which just goes to show that the majority of the playerbase doesn't find the actual game mode fun and is only there for the items in the first place.

Or that people value items over fun.
Anyway it seems I'll never know if this is actually fun because once again my team is doing the pudge fountain stupidity.

Tried diretide for the first time (didn't start playing till december of year).... is this what all the fuss was about? Kinda underwhelming

Yeah, if they're going to have a mode like this with rewards they need to make it so actually playing well is what gives you rewards. Sure there would probably still be 10-man stacks which feed each-other, but you could balance it as such so that time investment wouldn't make sense for the team feeding. And that wouldn't hurt the people solo-queing or 5-manning. They would still be rewarded for playing properly.
If they want to do a PVE thing it needs to be 5-man vs Roshan. You can't do this silly 10-man fight roshan thing for a record. It's a fun idea if there aren't rewards. It's an utterly stupid idea if there is, and quite amazing that Valve still left it in the game even, because it ruins the game for those who want to play properly.

This is just flat-out wrong though, i've been queued against plenty of people who raged because "No chance of breaking record" because people didn't play the way they wanted them to.

Honestly if there were only rewards for record-breaking it wouldn't affect pubs right now.
But right now even the RUMOR that getting to higher levels on Rosh gives you better drops means everyone is going all out for it.

The fuss was entirely about the hats. I find the mode moderately fun but guh.

It doesn't matter because more than half the time the servers don't register the end of the game properly, so you don't get the hats no matter how well you do.

Right but it doesn't give any specifics. So people are just blindly trying to get to higher levels despite the fact that the difference between playing the game normally and spamming for highest possible might not even be meaningful, rewards-wise.
