Do these sets cycle through the store, or do you have to just get lucky and find the other set items? They cycle. Old sets stop being sold, and new sets come in every now and then. Most items are droppable though, and also tradeable with others, where the currency is either chest keys or other items you own. When items gets really old, they stop dropping and turn "immortal". This hasn't happened to that many items yet.

We have too many examples of games are made with no competitive element in mind, and become successful later.

I'm legitimately curious: can you name a single game that has a competitive mode which completely overhauls the basic mechanics of the game, replacing them with something completely different? I've never heard of such a thing occurring ever...

Dota is ultimately not about 'battles arenas' or 'heroes brawling', it's a siege game. You kill buildings, that's the point. Anyway, Purge played some Hots apparently and yeah, this sounds a lot like 'not dota'. the funny thing is that on wc3 aos games traditionally had buildings and creeps to distinguish it as an aos map, otherwise these maps were just considered hero arenas or something like that, like warlocks
