I agree that OD needs to be changed but being interesting to play against doesn't justify a hero being blatantly stupid. TA was so prevalent during the TI2 era because she just hard countered Invoker, who was at the time another imbalanced mid. we live in a time where this game is a spectator sport, and a casual game at the same time Something that is boring to watch, and frustrating to play as/against cannot persist. Balancing after what people want to play with/against is the first step to something aweful.

Changes such as making the game faster or making a certain strat less viable are all about pleasure to play and watch. Of course you have to be careful with how you do with, but two common misconceptions are that you don't change something that is balanced and that you don't change something that is only an issue outside pro games. Both have been done plenty of times.

Dk can bottle crow and doesn't lose the lane nearly as easily due to not losing last hit damage from astral. He is also very hard to gank since he has a lot of life and armor.
SF on radiant more so than dire because he is guaranteed to get souls thus allowing him to last hit. SF with a few souls can easily go toe to toe with sf for last hitting, which if he plays correctly, can grab them early on when OD is still on low levels and can't spam astral yet.
The point of "countering" OD is to simply not let him dominate the lane, do that and you are in a fine position.

I more meant the whole "we need to balance for ESPORTS / my viewing pleasure / so that the game doesn't annoy me"-sort of thing.

Well, sure, but like the guy you quoted said, if something is boring to watch it is indeed an issue. The hard part is telling whether it is really boring to watch, if only a few people think it is boring to watch or even if there is something completelly diferent that made that game boring to watch.

I like a passive focused Viper as well. He cant really kill, but he can trade favorably and zone the OD out a bit, with a stick you also get mana to kill him at 6.

I feel like we have these "who beats OD in lane" discussions every few weeks.
Also, whether going even/stalemating vs OD is "good enough" depends very heavily on teamcomp.

Broodmother could do well.

I feel like the only one who watches mushi OD and enjoys it.

In a real game, she wins if she gets to Soul Ring (partly because of the DotA 2 bug where the Soul Ring mana buffer allows you to cast spells you don't have enough Intel to cast). In tournament 1v1 its a lot harder if Soul Ring isn't allowed.
Of course, then it's Broodmother, who's even more lane-centric than OD is.

Viper just sucks, OD can drain you up of all mana get major damage advantage and zone you out of lh with astrals. He won't ever attack you and you'll lose the lane horribly. If skin worked on target spell it would be another thing, but as it he sucks. Kka is pretty bad against OD too, you can maybe harass him slightly better and if you get a QB as first item you can also outdeny him with TB on, but he still astral you out of important CS and then you get just snowballed on after 4-5 mins.

skin does work on spells and sf/dk get completely destroyed by od...
