The flip side of this is that Riot matchmaking has virtually no accounting for smurfs--fresh accounts that are not fresh players spend a LOT longer playing with low level players in LoL than they do in DotA. I expect that this is an intentional choice by Valve. A very good choice I may add. Smurfing in dota 2 is much less rewarding for the 'lols' for good players to bother with and less of a nightmare for genuine new players. You might get 10ish games on a new smurf where you stomp the team into oblivion but after that you're likely to be playing other smurfs or low tier 'very high' players. It really doesn't take long at all to get into the upper echelon on a new dota account.

I'd agree it doesn't mean much in the sense that it doesn't mean you're any good, I play clueless people everyday in 'very high' but it does have a certain metric attached to it. I mean it's basically like if you took grandmasters->high diamond and put them into 1 player pool. That variance is insane.

Riot forces set positions whereas dota doesn't. Even if the algorithm was the same it would still be different. wut? You can play any role you want i thought? Yes but if you try to do anything that isn't what the norm you'll be called a troll and your team will start feeding/throwing/surrendering. So the MM essentially forces certain positions to be in all games. The first sentence is true at some skill levels, but it has nothign to do with the matchmaking algorithm...

If your MMR is pulled up to "very high" then it means that you were very rapidly separated from ruining games with new players in them despite being vastly better than them.

But you somehow managed to link forced positions by the players with the riot matchmaking. If someone trolls a position in lol (say ashe support) they may loose the game on that even if the team tries or they just surrender. The team is forced a loss but the player doing the trolling is going to get more losses than the teammates and therefore drop mmr. If the same were to happen in dota because someone tries something that simply doesnt work over and over and loose not because of surrenders but simply because there is no way to overcome the disadvantage, the same dude will drop more mmr than his teammates (because teammates only loose 1 game and he looses several), until he gets to a level where that strat actually works (on baddies)

To me, this is the matchmaking forcing you into playing certain positions.
