What the F. I was playing a game against a Lion, who had a blue ball (sortof lich ulti) going around him the whole time, and when he walked in the FoW, the blue ball went up and down where the FoW started.

DotA here in the States always felt so niche to me and I occasionally heard the "people buy Wc3 solely to play DotA" thing. There was never a huge blowout in DotA (and I would argue still isn't) like Starcraft II as well as League, if anything it's growth was subtle. There was a period when NA players expected DotA to turn over and die out before Icefrog announced that he was employed by Valve (Didn't Icefrog release a statement saying that it might not make sense to support wc3 as well?). So during this period before the first International (which was when DotA 2's gameplay was revealed), did the NA scene step their toes into the water with HoN? I even recall a lot of pro players that we're familiar with today just playing competitively because they really really liked the game. Puppey was ALWAYS a big name though as well as players such as Kky. When did Dendi enter the scene? Was Dendi a good but not quite amazing player before DotA 2? Anyways help clear some things for me please, just out of curiousity. I'm speaking out of blurred ignorant memory. •What was dendi like back then? •When did Chinese teams become dominant over the CIS region (Wc3 DotA)? What attributed to this? •how did Puppey become known? How did he earn his almost universal respect back then? •Was fear consistently good back then as well?

Chinese teams, more accurately SEA teams like KingSurf, Zenith, took over Europe at the ESWC in America like San Francisco, but basically Zenith just assraped everyone and curbstomped Europe Dota (NA dota doesn't exist to any significance). Chinese teams due to terrible lag never really participated in any international onlines, EHOME did some MYM Prime Defending, but with supershit lag, nobody really knew how judge their actual skill until....the first Alienware Cup held in the winter of 2009 (I think that's the year, not sure). AC was a LAN event held in China, and pretty much all non-Chinese teams got fucking raped. A lot of Euros were making fun of the Chinese style of play until they got a rude awakening during that time. Puppey said it himself in a cast with Tobi about that particular time, something along the lines of you think you were hot shit at a game and then you go there and find out that you don't know shit. So basically at that time, there were only a HANDFUL (<5) players in Europe who can play at the Chinese level, people who can keep up with CS against Chinese carries. China due to their connection issues just stayed in that region and became a separate scene more than anything. Nobody doubted their superiority though, ESWC 2010 cemented that when NV.cn was just like "ban chen win game". Puppey was the captain of KS.int, who to their credit were the best team in Europe for a short period. Then the meta changed, and he didn't, also lost Miracle as a support player (think Alliance losing Akke). Was seen as stubborn captain wanting to play this gank style despite all teams moving away from it. To be honest, he was always good captain if he had the players to run it, but not always the case. His creative picks and strategies were brilliant or just plain terrible as seen by his captaining of NV.int at ESWC 2010. Fear was the one of the best if not the best for the longest time dating back to the IHCS1 and CAL-I days. Took a break, came back to MYM, was still good, but obviously everyone else leveled up too. Fear is/was Fear. There's a bunch of history of Dota posts around on TL if anyone wants to read them. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=64016¤tpage=915#18294 is something I wrote just on a whim when someone asked, you can look at the posts around that one to get a better picture of the "older" days of Dota.

The thing I wish DotA 2 had retained is being able to whisper a player (the /w command) and a better friend system. Wc3 had a system that showed when both friends had added each other as well as well as an ignore list. The personalized profile thing in DotA 2 could be better imo.

@kuro The reason there is no whisper function is because it would facilitate raging out of game. I like that you have to friend someone to be able to talk to them. steam chat works great for me pretty much.

Riot's matchmaking also segregates very heavily on games played based on the fact that level 30 players almost always queue into other level 30s, and below that, matchmaking is usually noticeably segregated by level ranges. On average someone is going to hit level 30 around when they are at about 200-300 games played. So think about what MM would be like if after 300 games played, you never queued into someone with less than 200 games played unless you were exceptionally bad or stacking--it would weed out a lot of the ridiculous edge cases. The flip side of this is that Riot matchmaking has virtually no accounting for smurfs--fresh accounts that are not fresh players spend a LOT longer playing with low level players in LoL than they do in DotA. I expect that this is an intentional choice by Valve.

Thats honestly only true in certain skill circles mostly the dredges of the full on bads and then about halfway up the skill brackets where the idiots that think their teammates hold them back and they should be 2-3 leagues higher than they are. As long as youre not in one of those 2 areas most people don't care if you play something that makes even remote sense (Theyd be annoyed at something like AM support, but wouldnt care about something like semicarry ES. Unconventional but still viable to an extent.)
