There is actually an enormous drawback to having public mmr. it works in sc2 because its all 1v1 but in dota people will judge you based on your average k/d and other meaningless stats if they have that info available which is of course just ridiculous

I wouldnt necessarily be against a system that was private-only though. although you wouldnt be able to rate yourself against other people so i guess that would be meaningless

He does have sortof a point though. I'd very much like the mmr to be shown to you, but hidden to everyone else. That would at least solve the problem of people using it against you.

doesnt matter. everyone who hasnt got a public rating wont be taken serious and will be flamed / looked down upon. you could say "how about you dont care if your rating is bad". this would be the same as a "not public rating".
league of legends had an invisible rating when you were below a certain treshhold (lower 50%). so if you didnt have a rating for whatever reason, people assumed you were terrible.

Valve is a multi-billion dollar company who gets to pick the best of the best to work with them... If they can't get a game MM algorithm to the point where they are satisfied with it I just tend to think it's not a priority. Money doesn't give you good ideas out of thin air. Valve might be working hard on trying to think up a good system, we don't know. And if you so badly want a rank-based place to play go find an inhouse league, plenty exist. I didn't say anything about ranked, I asked for a source of a statement and then started to talk about Valve not doing anything about the MM system if they are unhappy with it (not public MMR). What i'm mostly disappointed is with the (lack of) information Valve puts out. Maybe you wanted to quote the other guy, dunno. You said they're a multi-billion dollar company as if that makes good ideas come out of nothing. The point probably isn't making an algorithm but rather thinking up a system that they are happy with. And we DON'T KNOW if they're working on it or how they're approaching it.

no not really because people with good ratings would just screenshot them and show them around, similar to the dotabuff rating system where everyone with a 99% rating just named himself "99%-shut the fuck up you colourblind moron"

I'll say again, starcraft has league, but if you go to ok-ish community discussions you don't see people trashtalking you about your rank and you don't see trashtalking in ladders regarding your league because your opponent/teammate is in the same league(most likely). So what's the point of having it hidden? did you live under a rock? no drawback of public ratings? there is a reason the popular games (sc2 / lol) use a rating system that try to hide how godawful you truly are as good as they can. How about ability of choosing if it's public or not and at least visible to you so YOU would know? BAM, how sick would that be? because then everyone who has it set to private is a pussy who can only play support because if they werent trashbags then they would have it set to public like me and my massive e-cock He does have sortof a point though. I'd very much like the mmr to be shown to you, but hidden to everyone else. That would at least solve the problem of people using it against you. no not really because people with good ratings would just screenshot them and show them around, similar to the dotabuff rating system where everyone with a 99% rating just named himself "99%-shut the fuck up you colourblind moron"
You can't really do that in game though, which is where the majority of the problem lies. You're not going to screenshot your mmr while playing the game so you can add them as friends and show them your massive epeen.

Dotabuff is third party, you aren't going to look up your opponents/teammates to insult them during game and there's no interaction out of game, what a stupid observation

no but people will brag about their rating. of course the other party can just lie if it is worse or whatever but the idea that a rating entitles someone to different things, i.e. certain itembuilds will be much more common when there is a rating system then when there is none (publicly). from an objective point of view, as long as you play the solo queue everyone should be around the same skill anyway and for the normal queue every outliner (friends with a vast difference in skill level) will happen to each team (yours and the opponent) about the same amount of time, so it will not influence your rating.
and even the track the improvement thingy isnt all that good because every rating system is per default a zero-sum-game. your relative standing in the rating can only get better if someones else relative standing is getting worse. so all in all, more than 50% of the community gets a negative feedback from a public rating system. (players who dont improve and players who get worse). i dont believe you should give negative feedback to the community.

The lack of sense of accomplishment is destroying my satisfaction with the game, pretty sure I am not the only one. I seriously cannot understand the pleasure of grinding games out and not seeing you reach any sort of ''hights'' . Like if you could have some sort of league rankings( let them have an option to show publicly or not ), you grind out games and you reach your goal, like a master's league. You can talk with your friends and shit, discuss how your grinding paid off and you know that for a fact you're the top 1% or whatever.
I really doubt people would have a fit of you having your league hidden, it would be painfully obvious that you got matched with players around your skill level from your league, doesn't matter if they have it hidden or not. Meanwhile you could have people see them progress through steps.

I might sound really old but..
Back in SC/BW and WC3 with clearly visible ratings... You just shut your mouth if a better player was talking. If he said your idea was dumb, it most likely really was --> End of story.
But well... The good old times :p.
Atm... I really don't care, i kinda like the idea of having a ranking but i also don't mind how it is atm... It's just not important to me and i don't see a "solo"-ranking of players in a game like Dota 2 a priority in any way. I know that i don't have progamers in my games (at least not that i know off) but that i actually kinda often see trilanes and players being familiar with the concept in my pubs... Thats enough of an indication of my skill (or lack thereof) for me .
Btw: If you want some accomplishment/measurement --> Just take your win % and try to get it up... You can do the math yourself ingame or just look at it on Dotabuff... Voilà there is your very own "rating". From my experience anyone over 54% is truely good, people under 50% are bad.

Just solved all your fucking problems with that 1 sentence. doesnt matter. everyone who hasnt got a public rating wont be taken serious and will be flamed / looked down upon. you could say "how about you dont care if your rating is bad". this would be the same as a "not public rating". league of legends had an invisible rating when you were below a certain treshhold (lower 50%). so if you didnt have a rating for whatever reason, people assumed you were terrible. So what's the difference assuming someone's terrible when there is a league and there isn't a league? And if both people are LITERALLY in the same league, how could one criticize their league if they are in the same fucking spot? I don't get your point Oh, I can solve that one. 1. There is a threshold between leagues. "I'm high caesium league, your low caesium league" 2. One has changed leagues once. "I may be crappium league like you, but 2 months ago I was fantastium league" 3. Personal delusion. "I see all these idiots in dirt league and I clearly belong into the better royal league. I just have bad luck with the system"
