How can you fucking pretend that a fucking wish for some sort of a league system is a ''typical thing of this generation''. Your post disgusted me to no end. Totally disregarding that those games were 1v1 games or arranged team games (the random team ladders were totally worthless) The only ladder which would make any sense in a teamgame like dota and not create a toxic community (i look at you hon/lol or various inhouse leagues) would be a 5v5 ladder, and that already exists.

Few months back I used to play a loooot of dota, I got matched with some known pros once in a while and yet I get matched with complete retards few games after, it's really hard to see if I'm doing better or not. In starcraft, I was playing and I could see if I'm advancing through leagues, if I couldn't see them, yes I could probably tell if I improved or not, but I wouldn't be able to tell by how much exactly. There is literally no drawback at having a visible public rank system apart people possibly teasing you about your league. I'll say again, starcraft has league, but if you go to ok-ish community discussions you don't see people trashtalking you about your rank and you don't see trashtalking in ladders regarding your league because your opponent/teammate is in the same league(most likely). So what's the point of having it hidden? At the point where you're high enough to end up on the first few pages of games, it's probably *easiest* to tell where you are in terms of MMR (since you have a visual indication by how often you're ending up on the first few pages). Probably the hardest place to tell how you're doing is that band where you're high enough to be in "Very High" in the skill filters, but not high enough to show up on the first few pages of games. Unfortunately, from my experience that's also where egos run the most rampant.

Team games are unrankable in terms of personal skills, and giving numbers to players just end in endless bitching , in the real world (see the concept of valuing soccer players, it's just endless retarded arguments with no clear substance) and in the online gaming world too. And yes he's right that the desire to be "recognized" while playing a game is retarded, either you are a pro player that make money, else you are playing a game you just sucks at. Are you stupid? Can you read and comprehend the points behind the posts? He says that achievements and leagues are crap of this generation. The post you quoted was made solely to point out that leagues and ranks existed forever and he's full of shit. I give up, it's like arguing with a brick russian wall. I get my games in ''very high'' and ''high'' if playing with friends, but those options are so loose it's impossible to tell if you are improving at that level.

Cum all over your awesome ranking which you now have because it actually makes fucking sense. The point of a 1v1 ranking in Dota is just not existant and if you want to know if you improve.. There are miriads of ways: Is your win % getting better? Is your win % with heroe X/Y/Z getting better? Are you on "X" or "XX" page in the Dota replay section. Does it say "high" or "very high" Do the pub games you get sometimes "somewhat" resemble progames or is it full chaos bonanza? How many Lasthits do you get on a (close to) freefarm lane when your carry? Do you sometimes feel like you just pulled of a "Dendi"?... If you really need a specific number to measure your progness your a really sad person... Just look at your win %, and be happy when it goes up/sad when it goes down if you need too... Just like you would be with a visible MMS/Ranking.

I didn't say i couldnt' accept both sides ![]() Tosadalis said he can not understand the 'pleasure' of 'grinding games' without seeing yourself reach new heights. I just pointed out that plenty of people(Myself included) simply play because the game is fun. I never said playing for accomplishment wasn't also a perfectly fine reason to play.

I specifically mentioned that term having people who play for progress in mind, that's the sole purpose of grinding games.

edit: Funny story time; xboct/smile/lost won mthfckn ti1 + countless other tournaments and are still hated on by a myriad of people, this is how much worth accomplishments have in dota

The closest thing to accomplishments in dota are achieved through playing with your team and actually beating decent opponents who play for accomplishments aswell, not dicking around in a public game beating people who play the game for whatever reason. Pub practice is good for grinding out mechanics. Really really good actually.

That's why I started this talk, presenting my points on why I, and some other people, would want a ranking system. I tried defending my statements. And you can improve yes, but grinding is an efficient method of doing so, I'll again refer to starcraft scene because it is more well-established. Koreans, they're obviously better than foreigners, and the only sole reason for this is grinding. They grind out shitload of games, unbelievable amount of games and they improve a lot more. Grinding is ok. BLAH Double post, wanted to edit in, forgot.

We had this discussion dozen of times already. You are not even making one of the better arguments compared to those who came before. This was said multiple times: 1v1 ranking is different to solo ranking in 5v5 game. It is fundamentally different. Look at HoN, look at LoL before they did Leagues. For a TEAM game, there is no proven system that doesn't lead to more drawbacks than advantages. For SOLO games there are proven working systems. But dota isn't a solo game, unless you only do 1v1 solo mid games.

Grinding the "Find Match" button in dota will give you nothing besides decent mechanics, but those are only a miniscular part of dota; there are hundreds of people out there with mechanics equal to pro-players who havent achieved anything. To get anywhere near decent in dota you have to play organized 5v5 games (unless you are the 1 in a million like bulldog) and thats why a ladder system does not make much sense.

Again, I'll say that that post was dedicated to showing that his reasoning regarding leagues/ranks being a fad of this generation is dumb. And regarding leagues, I hate to mention league of legends because I dislike that game, but from what I can gather that system is doing pretty ok.

I have friend who recently are now getting that very high filter for their solo queue games, but are still far below my friend and I in terms of actual skill level. The two of us (other friend) get first page games, and then we queue with any of our other friends and never end up there (yet they are in very high). Side note: everyone keeps thinking I'm draskyl now since I use thundercougarfalconbird as my name on dota (and have been for like 700 games) -_-'
