If you're ricing then more in sadist before heartstopper sometimes. Also level 1 hearstopper is sometimes better than lvl 1 pulse or sadist.

It's pretty situational. Particularly melee heroes will spend more time inside Heartstopper, so that rank 1 Heartstopper will have more effectiveness against them. After the buffs to Sadist, its rare that you want to max Heartstopper over Sadist. Was more reasonable when it returned only mana, but Sadist is also a 240 HP heal on hero kills as well now, which has a really big effect in fights when you get a kill with Scythe and get an enormous burst of HP back. Almost always 4-1-4 or even 4-0-4 now.

e: just don't go aghanims first. You don't nearly have enough mana to use it, even with Arcane boots, it's absolutely not worth it.

his stun cd is short and it's really good so if you can position yourself properly you can cast it over and over in fights

You need to give him mid (awkward cuz his ganking is mediocre and he has some bad matchups--but he crushes almost all melees really hard) or freefarm him safe lane. Anything less than 2nd position farm makes it rough for Necro to really bring his advantages to bear (it's Zhou and Burning who play Necrolyte on iG and DK, not the lower-position players). Necro requires you to be able to get an advantage off of either your fundamentals, or your lane matchup early. If you get an advantage you basically crush your lane because even the first rank of Sadist means you're constantly regen-ing a ton of HP and mana. Necro has two things that make him really good in pubs: 1) he turns around fights where the other team overcommits really well (heal teammate, Scythe enemy that dived for kill), and 2) he snowballs really hard once you get to the point where your team can just kill someone. As soon as someone drops into Scythe kill range, you just grab the kill and instantly pop your HP up and clean up the fight. That's exactly my problem with necro, many people expects him to support. When I have one on my team I tell him to go mid or if he ends up in my lane I tell him to take the farm so no problme. But when I pick him, I almost always end as support. It's like asking zeus to support...

Like you said, no one item really makes him that much stronger, so spending the gold to get more exp is neat, I think. And later on you still can spend the gold on good items like aghanims, hex and shiva. Of course, if you're buying wards and not farming at all, you're happy if you can get arcane boots. e: just don't go aghanims first. You don't nearly have enough mana to use it, even with Arcane boots, it's absolutely not worth it. what, ofc you do, stun is 105 mana and agha stun is 400 mana by the time you get it you should have like 800-1000 mana

It's like asking zeus to support... While this is true, pretty much all the necros I see do it to themselves by picking him when we already have a strong mid and two carries on our team. If we have mag, am and weaver and someone takes necro, you can bet that guy just opted into support necro. Same deal with zeus, who is nearly as common a lastpick as drow. I agree it can be a problem when someone picks him first and then the team takes another three carries, but at that point it helps to say "I'll need a support" or whatever. Personally, I didn't know what to do with him until this came up, and I think a lot of people are in the same boat.
