Should've kept that. It sounded so good in that Defense montage "once upon the Defense"

While its almost completely speculative, my opinion is that it mainly went down due to the monitization of dotabuff (dotabuff "plus") from data technically backdoored from valve. The privacy issue / making stats public was likely another part as well (OMG LOOK AT UR DBR U NO PLAY MID NOOOOOOOOOOOOOB)

Well, its a long-ass story.

Basically, Dotabuff (being the high-quality, ad-free website it was), decided that they would like to pay for their bills, and maybe make some money (seems legit to me). So they thought "hmmm, how do we make money? well obviously a subscription model is the best" (plus they are owned by lolking or whatever that has a similar subscription model). Then they had to decide how to get people to subscribe, and they decided that the easiest way was to have an MMR, and somehow let subscribers have better access. So they wrote their code to extract MMR (called it "DotaBuff rating" or DBR), and then asked the community "Hey, should we make this public or private?". Whether or not they faked the poll is up for debate, but the response was: ~65% public, but a huge uproar about it. Really really big. So they said "Oh we are sorry we caused such a debate. Of course we never dreamed of actually making it public despite what our polls say. Wait till we release "dotabuff plus" on friday and DBR then you will see what we plan".

Meanwhile valve is like:

A) We kinda like the invisible MMR
B) We don't really like how you are going to sell our statistics
C) We don't really like you using the backdoor method to get results anymore when we set up a Web API for this

So valve added a privacy setting in dota 2 that lets you control access to your stats via the web api (Opt-IN, not opt-out). Dotabuff didn't really care (cuz they didn't use the web API), so they released private DBR and dotabuff plus (although dotabuff plus only let you see your historical DBR basically).

Then valve disabled the method dotabuff was using (and they are rapidly upgrading the web API to mirror dotabuff's previous functionality).

Dotabuff went apeshit and claimed that they were "shut down by valve", and disabled all access to their stats for a few days. The court of public opinion voted for valve over dotabuff though, so dotabuff came back with their tail between their legs and are now showing all the old stuff, using valve's web API, with most players now listed as "anonymous" in replays. I don't actually know if they can still calculate DBR, and I don't much care.

End

interesting lol, trying to monetize such stats... thanks for the long detailed explanation!

Fair enough, I wasn't too clear on exactly how dotabuff was extracting the info other than it was "backdoor" and not using the web API that valve built essentially special for them.

Actually Valve said they want a visible MMR, their match making system right now isn't good enough to have one however so until they fix their match making they aren't going to let people see their rating because their match making isn't reliable.

I still think they are refering to implementing a team MMR.

Hah my Lich literally wen't from my very worst hero to my best with maxed bar in heroes played.

It totally looks like only or mostly win/lose matters with this new system, based on my personal one at least.

Also my Windrunners bar vanished to somewhere even though it's my top 3 played hero.

I am 1-5 with CM, and I used to have full bars with her somehow, but now I have like 1-2 bars

yeah w/l seems to be the main factor for me too. Apparently my 4-1 pre-nerf lycan is out of this world, while the heroes I am good with but am only 55-60% with are middle of the road.
