People dont even understand how to play slark right now (no one does actually) not even counting that shredder is lining up to be releashed this month. Personally i think slark is a very strong solo pusher/jungler. I play slark quite similar to how i play meepo: dodge teamfight and side push/jungle, pick off stand-alone-hero. I often save skill points so i only max out 1st skill after i got ulti. But i also see a more successful ganking slark with shadowblade by singsing. thats fine, played enough diretide to last me for awhile

I also completely fail to see how he ruins other team's fun. I will say one thing I do really like about slark though, windrunners and darkseers cannot escape him early game. He is also insanely fun to play and I have had a lot of success with lothars and mom strats. (Success when my team magically wins all lanes...)

Dark pact is amazing for farming and he can do a nice burst of damage on a hero and pseudo-immobilize them simultaneously. Ignoring the active component of the ult and essence shift entirely he's still a decent hero. He has plenty of weaknesses but people really are ignoring his strengths (namely that his invisibility is not countered by dust, track, or amplify damage, and he can detect the presence of wards via his ult). Whether he's competitively viable is a different question, but he's certainly fine in pubs. I would rather see a slark than a meepo on my team.

His laning isn't hideous, he's not amazing by any means but he's more useful than say a Void or Spectre, albeit more reliant on a skillshot. His stats gain is bad, but compared to a lot of agi heroes (AM, void,...), his HP gain is better than them. His damage is bad, but only when he attacks creeps. With 3rd skill, it basically gives him +19 damage when attacking heroes (or +22 damages if you count the +3 agi each attack.) His 1st skill is spammable. 2nd skills is a good initiate and escape tool. Overall, I think his laning phrase is not bad. For competitive play, there're better alternatives, but for pub, I don't think there're anything worth complaining about him. From all the games that I play and see with him in there, his team wins most of the time.
