According to Manager Ji-Hoon Lee, Violet has been complaining of symptoms of anemia and fatigue lately. Violet went to a hospital to get a physical and was found to have Acute Leukemia
Violet is currently in the emergency room being treated, and will be undergoing chemotherapy shortly after.

I hope that Violet gets a full recovery soon; it is sad to see any person, no matter who they are, in a sick condition. ><;; Violet fighting!!
My thoughts exactly... this is horrible horrible news. I am sending all my best thoughts and wishes in his direction, really hope he gets through this.
I feel like we should somehow organize a big project to send get-well wishes to him, sorta like the Jaedong birthday card a few weeks ago. But, I don't know anyone in Korea who could make this happen. Hopefully it can get done somehow.
man that sucks! he was really starting to hit a good stride in WL too. this is awful :\
really hope he gets better, but he will most likely never play BW again, or at least not at his current level. man that sucks. lets just hope he pulls out of this OK though.
really hope it's treatable and he makes a full recovery. Terrible news. Violet is an awesome guy and was good enough to give us an interview a while ago. Best of luck to him.
Oh my god, that is terrible. I quickly did a wiki search, and the survival rate is 20%-75%. That is terrible, please don't die on us Violet! Best of luck, and do whatever you can to get well. You are a great player, but more importantly even a better person. I don't think anyone wants you gone. Get well!
Poor Violet. I have known a couple really good people who have had their lives cut short by leukemia so I sincerely hope he can fight it and make a full recovery.
That could be very life threatening depending on the type, I hope the best for him. What a horrible thing to go through when you're barely in your 20s.
Get well violet! You never understand how valuable life is until death is staring you straight in the face. Violet should know that the whole Starcraft community is behind him and wishes for him to get well.
I am shocked speechless right now and I feel awful for him, his family, and his friends. I guess life can hit any one of us with a curveball (that feels completely inadequate to describe cancer), and that it would happen to such an awesome person as Violet really makes it strike home.
Wow, the diagnosis really shocked me! When we get news of health problems in the pro scene, we always hear things like hand injuries and stomach infections. Leukemia didn't even occur to me as a possibility. I hope he gets better and shows the entertaining games he usually shoes.
Hope he gets better, someone should make a get-well thread and then print off all the IDs of people that signed it and send it with a real get well card.
Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), is a form of leukemia, or cancer of the white blood cells characterized by excess lymphoblasts. Malignant, immature white blood cells continuously multiply and are overproduced in the bone marrow. ALL causes damage and death by crowding out normal cells in the bone marrow, and by spreading (infiltrating) to other organs. ALL is most common in childhood with a peak incidence at 2–5 years of age, and another peak in old age. The overall cure rate in children is about 80%, and about 45%-60% of adults have long-term disease-free survival.[1] Acute refers to the relatively short time course of the disease (being fatal in as little as a few weeks if left untreated) to differentiate it from the very different disease of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia which has a potential time course of many years. It is interchangeably referred to as Lymphocytic or Lymphoblastic. This refers to the cells that are involved, which if they were normal would be referred to as lymphocytes but are seen in this disease in a relatively immature (also termed 'blast') state.
From Wikipedia.
What counts is that I guess he got treatment for this early, and there's a fairly decent chance of it being cured.
C'mon Violet, you've beat tougher odds before (like 3-killing OZ), you'll be okay!
I'd be happy to contribute some words to whatever project that may come up to support him!
Oh this is horrible D: , I really hope Violet can fight through this. He's a great player on KT, I hope he'll be able to overcome this, and hopefully he can make a full recovery! Get well soon Violet!
Hopefully its ALL! ALL (esp. if its the commoner variants) is very static and not aggressive in its behaviour. However, if its AML...Chemo + Bone Marrow Transplant is the way to go... Also if its AML hopefully its AML-M3 which has really good prognosis with Imatinib.
Can sum1 please clarify wat Leukemia it is exactly! Thanks...
I had a good friend who was diagnosed with the same exact thing. She pulled through and now is leukemia free. I am confident you can pull through and nip this thing in the butt.
I know you can do it Violet! If there is anything started like a card or something im definately in on it.
This is going to be a lifelong worry for Violet, and depending on the type of acute leukemia, and where the malignant white blood cells exist (i.e. the central nervous system) the prognosis can be quite poor. He's looking at a lot of chemotherapy, anti-remission drugs that have all sorts of side effects, and possibly a bone marrow or hematopoietic (relating to the formation of blood cells) stem cell transplant.
To see exactly what's happening, here's some pictures:
Here's a normal looking blood stain with a noncancerous lymphocyte in the dead center:
This is what Violet's blood stain may look like:
The problem is that the amount of cancerous lymphocytes present in the blood interfere with the normal processes of noncancerous white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. Normally lymphocytes account for somewhere around 30% of all white blood cell types. In the last picture, there is one neutrophil in the bottom right (and maybe one near the center, but it might be a much less common eosinophil), which are the most common WBCs, around 60%. In other words, having way more lymphocytes than neutrophils is obviously a very bad thing.
I've already dealt with my best friend having leukemia, and I can tell you it's an ongoing struggle. Hopefully hopefully hopefully, everything will be all right for one of my very favorite protosses, and a genuinely nice person.
Please get better Violet! Hwaiting! He was in a pretty good groove recently too, and brings so much energy and charisma to KT. Hopefully his family and teammates stay strong too.
Horrible news. It is chocking really, I don't know how to respond to this. It would be great if some one organized so that we could send him our gett-well wishes.
Never thought someone so young would get cancer. You just never know what's gonna happen to you in this world. Stay strong and get better please Violet.
is there anything we can do for the family/team? i would love to contribute at least a little bit, and i'm sure Violet's family would be surprised by the international outpouring of support!
as a fan who has continued to watch violet, even without having met the guy, i can say that he is a genuinely classy guy. I couldnt help but shed some tears as I personally know some people who have experienced what violet will be experiencing. Keep fighting Woo Jung Ho. You and your family will have my prayers.
This is a horrible thing...However, out of all the possible senario's this is probably the best cancer to get. With ALL and other Leukemia's, cure rates are up to 80%. I'm sure he'll be alright and my prayers are with him, his family and his teammates. God Bless.
I'm in for a card or something if someone organizes it and we can contribute via Paypal. Or a cool gift, whatevs, would be deserved! I'll try and check up on this topic regularly - please update OP if something is organized so that we don't have to read up the dozens of pages that will be coming
Don't know how I didn't notice this thread sooner.
Definitely awful news to hear as a fan of KT and a fan of Violet in general. Definitely hope he is able to overcome the luekemia and own it up some more in the proleague (as he has as of late!).
Terrible news, but he's a young guy, so he'll hopefully be strong enough to make a full recovery! If someone with connections to korea would organize a get-well card it'd be greats

Well, from the wikipedia that was quoted it was 80% for children. 45%-60% for adults. Sadly, Violet would be counted in the latter category.
Chemo Therapy will do more damage than good. Better to use vitamin B17 that are found in for example apricot seeds or other alternatives. See the movie a world without cancer by G. Edward Griffin.

Yeah... Regardless I'm still hoping he goes for the chemo or any other relevant treatments that the specialists suggest.
I hope He gets all the treatment he needs. Lymphoblastic Leukemia is certainly not a joke. I hope he has the strength to survive and that we will see him play again soon.

I am not sure if you are joking or not, but i hope you realise that this is complete bullshit. Don't believe everything you see in the movies man -_-;; Get some critical thinking skills plz.

Uhm, I think if doctors say that chemo is better... CHEMO IS GOING TO BE BETTER.
Life brings much suffering. It is up to us to overcome it. I don't know who Violet is but lets send him all the love we can and hope the right people can do whats right for him.
I hope he gets better. No one deserves suffering.
Get well Violet! The Liquid community is always with you!
get well soon Violet, that's an unfortunate thing to happen. My cousin went through a type of Leukemia earlier last year and he's fine and dandy. Hoping the same luck to you.
if you're in korea, there are people who are donating blood, getting certificates, to send them to Violet cause he'll need it in the middle of his treatment later
It's pretty amazing that he managed to squeeze 6-2 record in January. Leukemia must have started couple of weeks if not months before it got diagnosed and it surely had negative impact on his play. Now I wonder if Violet's relatively poor 2010 results were because of this illness.
Anyway, best wishes for him! Lance-Armstrong-like comeback plz!
omg!! i cant believe it!! violet its an incredible nice player, one my favs toss and member of my loved all-time sc team... im so sad and worried now, i whish you get better soon uv toss!!
it seems that he has caught it early since he was playing just days ago and if hes in good shape and has been eating well he will have a VERY high chance at survival, get well violet!
Its a rather common type of leukemia in children. I do not know his age, but in kids it has a cure rate of over 80%, in adults the prognosis worsens, however it depends on many factors. Mainly the white blood cell count, compromise of different systems (particularly CNS), and any genetic alterations present. Since we don't know any of this, we can only wish him good luck, chemotherapy can be pretty rough.

This would be really awesome if we were to create some kind of get well thread full of Violet Cheerful or something like that and maybe send the link?
Everyone go to BW general forums- "[Project] Messages for Violet" thread. NeverGG is putting together a letter from everyone to him. Show your support!
It's ok he can micro his white blood cells against the cancer.
I've lost somebody to cancer so I know how brutal it can be to deal with. I wish you the best of luck violet and I hope you have a quick and painless recovery.
On January 28 2011 14:24 JiYan wrote: you know those cards we make for jaedong, flash or whoever that we want to encourage? we should make one for him..
The Korean Starcraft scenes are out in full force supporting Violet. Nearly every person associated with both broodwar and sc2 I'm following on twitter has sent out a message in support of him and the blood drive.
Here's hoping that Violet will make a full recovery. No one should go through such a tragedy, and I have full condolences for his family, friends, and teammates.
Also, has there ever been another pro-gamer who has had health problems as serious as this? It always saddens me to see public figures contract such major illnesses.
As someone who has had and survived this disease, I can tell you that there is a long hard road ahead of Violet. ALL is usually three years of chemotherapy, with the first year being intense chemotherapy. I don't think he'll be able to practice, let alone compete at all during this stage .
My best wishes for him. I know he'll come out on top of it. <3 Violet.
I'd make a joke about Irradiate here, but eh. Yeah.
Sucks. I remember the time when he used Maelstrom + Storm to rape a pile of mutas (forgot the player) trying to harass his templars. That was really sweet and something I'd like to see more of.
Holy shit, this is awful!! I can't imaging how much this sucks for him right now...

He's 22.
Oh man, I remember when he was on fire during the...beginning of '09, I think? He was making an awesome comeback and was playing so well. What happened to him after that?
Get better!! Reminds me of Space who had disease which effed up his fingers but yet was still able to compete at the highest level of WC3. Violet fightUUUUUUUUUUUU
violet...u will get thru this.... god bless take care, gl!, just keep in mind, if u survive this, uve joined a family of "cancer survivors" and thats a family that means alot to anyone to know someone or are apart of it
This is terrible news, i saw the ribbon after an hour surfing TL and i went WTF is that, what happened to Violet.....And now i read this sad news. I hope he gets better and make it through!!

yeah luckily the acute leukemi is not as bad as the chronic leukemia, he's young so he should probably survive this

Wrong thread dude, check the OP for the link to NeverGG's thread
Scientists at the Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases and The Saban Research Institute of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles have announced a breakthrough in understanding how the body fights leukemia.
The scientists have identified a protein called CD19-ligand (CD19-L) located on the surface of certain white blood cells that facilitates the recognition and destruction of leukemia cells by the immune system. This work represents the first report of a bioengineered version of CD19-L, a recombinant human biotherapeutic agent targeting CD19-positive leukemic stem cells.
B-lineage acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common cancer occurring in children and adolescents. Despite having received intensive chemotherapy, some patients have recurring disease. For these individuals, the prospect of long-term survival is poor.
“We need new anti-leukemia therapies capable of killing chemotherapy-resistant leukemia cells in patients with relapsed ALL,” said Fatih Uckun, first author on the paper that has been published in the British Journal of Haematology. “These are the cells that are the most difficult to treat. The challenge is to kill these cells while leaving healthy cells intact.”
Uckun is professor of pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC and a member of the Developmental Therapeutics Program at the Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell involved in immune function, are categorized as either B-cells or T-cells. CD19-L, the newly discovered element, is expressed on the surface of T-lymphocytes and allows them to selectively bind to the CD19 receptor on the surface of B-lineage leukemia cells, and most importantly on leukemic stem cells responsible for the survival and expansion of the leukemia cell population.
Once the CD19-L binds to leukemia cells, cell death occurs. Although CD19 is abundantly expressed on leukemia cells from B-lineage ALL patients, it is absent on red cells, T-cells and normal bone marrow stem cells, making it specific, and therefore, a good therapeutic target. Uckun and colleagues have bioengineered and prepared a highly purified liquid formulation of the human CD19-L protein. This recombinant protein not only shows selective binding to leukemia cells but also causes their rapid destruction within 24 hours. CD19-L killed even those leukemia cells that were highly resistant to both standard chemotherapy drugs, as well as radiation.
CD19-L is the first CD19-specific recombinant human protein with potent anti-leukemic activity against B-lineage ALL, the most common form of childhood cancer and the second most common form of acute leukemia in adults. The identification of CD19-L may lead to therapeutic innovation for childhood leukemia by allowing a selective destruction of leukemic stem cells.
According to Uckun, the next step will be to carefully evaluate this new agent for clinical potential against leukemia and to confirm in preclinical studies that leukemic cell destruction can be achieved at non-toxic dose levels.
“The CD19-ligand offers a previously unrecognized defense system against leukemia and opens a new range of therapeutic opportunities for the treatment of leukemia,” said Stuart Siegel, director of the Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

It says it in the title. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. It's a type of cancer that affects precursory Lymphocytes that differentiate into different types of Lymphocytes, also known as Lymphoblasts. If you looked at a slide of it you'd basically see immense amounts of malformed Lymphoblasts. Survival rate/cure is at about ~50-40%.
