Short Interview with oGsMC, the winner of GSL Open Season 3
Original Post (In korean): http://www.playxp.com/sc2/news/view.php?article_id=2464681
Q: First, your thoughts/feelings on winning GSL?
A: It felt good when I realized I had won, but I only really realized it once I got my hands on the trophy.
Q: Your tournament win came after transitioning from Pro-gamer status. Your thoughts on that?
A: I think all the hyungs (older teammates) will be very envious of me.
Q: This was the first GSL win for Protoss. Your thoughts?
A: I believe my win showed that [Protoss] can be powerful when its units are used to their maximum potential. I have 10+ builds I can use against Terran. I plan on showing much more powerful builds next season.
Q: Your plans on using the prize money?
A: I had this planned before the Final. 10k will be given to team, 10k to myself and the rest to my mother. (currency value may not be accurate)
Q: What makes you so confident?
A: My high winning ratio during practice makes me confident. If I was to lose a lot [during practice], I wouldn't have this kind of confidence.
Q: What are your plans 'till next season?
A: Since I have other tournaments scheduled, I don't have any time to rest. I need to practice for the tournaments I received invitation to.
Q: There wasn't any showing of using Warp Prism prior to your Finals. Do you think your game will have influence on other Protoss players?
A: 2nd set went in a direction that was not planned by me. Terran player doing tank oriented build cannot match the mobility of Warp Prism. That's the reason I used Warp Prism, for its mobility. When I watch other Protoss games, I feel that their understanding of Terran match up is low. I cannot reveal my own know-how, but once they understand it, victory will come a lot easier.
Q: Was your proxy gateway in 4th set planned?
A: I used proxy gate as I had confidence in my micro control. I believe TsLRain's cheese rush is very powerful. Proxy gate was my way of showing confidence.
Q: We were anticipating some kidn of ceremony, but did not see any. Do you regret not doing it?
A: It was difficult to do ceremonies. I did not know the timing when Camera goes on me. I plan on studying cameras so I can do my ceremony at the right timing.
Q: You had bad results in prior seasons, but you were able to take the tournament this season. What sort of change made that possible?
A: Because I began committing to SC2 not even a month after I announced my transition, I had low level of understanding of the game. I thought it would be difficult even to get past the preliminary rounds. In season 2 I joined up oGs Clan, and I grew with every defeat against NesTea. Looking back, those games vs. Nestea allowed me to grow. To be honest, I wanted to face Nestea in the final this season.
Q: Any regrets on transitioning to SC2 from BW?
A: It is very difficult as a B team player [in BW]. As they have [SC2] tournaments every month, you get A team player treatment once you make it to round of 16. In the past, it was hard not having teammates, but such problem went away after joining oGs clan. It was the right choice.
Q: Your goal for the future?
A: My goal is to become the world champion on world [SC2] league. I wish to become the first player to win consecutive seasons. I plan on getting good results on various tournaments next year. I wish to become a gamer that everyone remembers. I don't believe one win cuts it. I have plans on doing ceremonies that will have people remember me.

man does he have some confidence.I totally meant that in a good way.
|
10+ builds O_O ok may be exaggerated (Jinro tell us!) but still he's confident and has different builds :O Man I hope he gets his success because I so want to see his ceremonies :D
|
MC owns, i just love how he is cocky in a funny way that is not really bad mannered
|
Why is it that every korean gamer who wins a big sum of money, says that he will give most of it to his parents. Aren't they a capitalist country? They should know how to spend/invest money on their own.

It's the culture in Asia. Family, especially parents, are extremely important.

MC is only 19. hes still a kid so i dont think it's unwise to give his money to someone who will probably take better care of it.

hands down the best Korean interview in SC2 so far, i will read this many times
|
They live with their families longer in asian cultures, so he respects them and will give them his money O.o that's just how things work. Most western people would do the same actually.
Anyway, MC really was the best player, he destroyed all terrans and made PvT look imba considering most P just lose to some marauder push, it was awesome to watch I'm glad he finally won.

ditto. Its somewhat a tradition to give your first paycheck (or at least a part of it) to your parents as a way of saying thanks for bringing you up (food, shelter, care, love, education,etc.etc.).

Congratulations!

I'm really impressed by him

Its called filial piety mate. Its a big thing in Asia, a culture thing.
Now eagerly awaiting for the Terran meister to reveal himself in 2011. Will it be MVP? He's kinda disappointing though, going out so early to Choya.

I dunno man.. Where i live, a better way of saying thanks for all that to your parents if you make that kind of money is to develop a nice hobby of snorting cocaine and getting acquainted with half the brothels and erotic massage parlors in the city. I think it pretty much defines the term baller.

As someone mentioned already, filial piety (respect that a child should show to his/her parents) is one of the most important and stressed aspect of the philosophy.

Cool. I imagined it's a tradition thing, didn't know there's an actual philosophy wrapped around it though. Learned something new today, thanks.

Good mindset. I really believe that being so confident can give you a great edge in tournaments. I like his honesty and he seems to be realistic and analytical. He said he wasn't that good - then he trained and improved.
I am glad to see a protoss win GSL 3 nad I believe that PvT will see a lot of dynamic in hte future.

Haha he's going to study cameras.
What a baller.

how can one study cameras? oO

now I know why your country is doing so great
|
Not surprised, only surprised at the fact that there was no ceremony. Ohs noes, warp prism is out of the bag - I knew it'd be a turning point for toss. I just was hoping that its exposure would be delayed... of course speaking as a non-toss.
|
Oh this is already translated...I was just about to work on this lawl
|
my guess is they give the money to the parents cuz money is family business. probably they dont know how to get max yields, so the parents care about this.
remember, even though the clan is called "old Generations" they guy is only 19 years old...
|
oh man hes gona study the camera's!!!
|
He should have been allowed to pose like a pirate on the moveable stands during gsl
|
Entertaining in both playstyle and personality! A deserving champion!
|
I like how the winner of the GSL is the race that people are complaining about as being the weakest lol.. exception being nestea cus zerg wasn't really weak then

Its not just culture, in the end whatever money you give to your parents is going to come back to you as your inheritance. Also the older generations in asian families in general are very careful about spending, and do not spend too much on partying, travelling and other social activities which are prevalent in the west. Giving back the money to parents is a way of keeping themselves grounded and helps keep the money secure, so that they can have a safe future with the investment.

I dunno dude, if you think of the cost for your parents to raise you, it seems VERY selfish that the few kids that win a lot of money that they don't really need it to not give at least some back to their parents. And MC wouldn't be so good if he didn't have oGs to pay, feed, and supply a progaming house and practice partners, so again, makes sense to give back. 90% of oGs players will not be able to pay back so its good that he can.
I mean, normally people work and have enough trouble supporting for themselves and possibly their own potential kids, but this is a rare sum of money for a young person to win.
|
Most people I know that have a sudden rice in financial success tend to give money to their family (cars, house, cash etc). The only difference here is that Koreans is very upfront about it.

Gosugamers.net Interview: + Show Spoiler +I'm very happy, I won but I made a mistake in set 3 so that's been wandering in my head.
My mom pops up in my head first, and then my oGs team members. oGsGon, oGsTheWind and oGs.
Now I have a 100,000,000 won. And when I win in Code S, I will make you richer.
When did you first think you were going to win?
- In the first set, my opponent played as he expected, so Terrans are still below me. I expected a cheese rush in most games, but Rain showed different strategies. It was a bit startling, but I could hold it off.
I don't think there's anyone out there who can beat me. If I play Terran I would have won three times. I won as a Protoss because I'm so good.
um, are those different interviews?
anyways, damn, the last line made me lol so fucking hard. whether hes an arrogant, an idiot or smth else. just hearing those words from a korean m*************cking PROGAMER gives me hope. not balancewise, but i just missed honest words from progamers, because its so rare to hear them complaining

The NASCAR style jackets because they look sweet as hell, I love their current outfit but they would look more bad ass.

he isnt calling it even, he says, terran has an advantage. and thats even more sick. i mean, you just won the gsl, walk onto the stage and tell everyone, you play toss, because its weak and playing terran wouldnt be a challange!
on the other hand terrans apologize, that they win games!
quite strange, but funny nontheless!

Some times certain players make certain matchups look imba. Iloveoov did it in TvZ, Savior did it in ZvP, then Bisu did it for a while in PvZ. But really, it isn't the matchup, it's just one great player who happens to have an exceptional understanding of how to win a certain kind of game.
MC is on that level in PvT. No other Toss in the world can play the matchup the way he does.

I am not excited to see the influx of MC strats into the ladder now...
one gate proxy Void ray Warp prism use
P is going to be even scarier now that they have somebody to stand by.
FD and Nestea did it for Z
Foxer completely redefined Terran
And now Protoss has there hero.
The game is coming to life gentlemen war will bring us all of its glory and horror

LOL +1 MC = 4th race!

mc mentions he understands terran matchups in a way most players don't. Anyone know what secret he might be talking about? I'm rather curious myself
|
What a baller interview . Especially intrigued by his comments about Warp Prisms. I don't main Protoss, but I just assumed that if Warp Prisms aren't usually used by pros, then they must not be worth taking up that Colossus build time on the Robo.
It's interesting to see that MC cites heavy tank play specifically as one of the situations in which Warp Prisms are useful.
@ JoeSchmoe - I think that there is no single, game-changing 'secret' about PvT that's going to suddenly revolutionise the matchup. I believe MC's just referring to his incredible understanding of Terran builds, and responding appropriately and boldly (like with the Warp Prism use). Both his usage of Warp Prisms in Game 2 and Phoenixes in game 1 really demonstrated high-mobility Protoss in action.

It's very common in asia, especially east asia. Their parents take care of the money and save it in the bank. So when their son get married, the saved money will be used for wedding, housing, etc. Most parents won't spend the money on themselves unless absolutely necessary.

Hi there,
can someone write down the little interview the women had with MC right after he won the last set of the Finals ? I couldnt hear John very good because she was talkin corea so loud, but since John was laughing several times, it must have been funny and i would really like to know why.
thx

I would definitely give a huge portion to my parents. Not only is this a shitty economy to invest in for the average person, but I'd sooner pay back my parents for paying for my tuition, and help with the mortgage since they are struggling. It's not like he won the lotto. That money will dry up quite fast actually.

MC gave some great games this season, and realy made TvP look like a piece of cake! and lol he did distribute his money good, and yeah man, later in life in asian families you can give them some of the money you earned just to say "Thx a lot paps" to all those years they took care of you.

its curious how events turns out, in the beginning everybody claimed terran were the greatest, when GSL was announced i imagine terran will be one of the first race to be crowned champion, its amazing how terran is now the only race without tittles, i loved terran in scbw but now, i dont feel that emphatic to them anymore, i feel more identified with the protoss race, so congratulations to MC for rising the protoss race where it deserve to be....the top of the hill yee haw.

ditto. Its somewhat a tradition to give your first paycheck (or at least a part of it) to your parents as a way of saying thanks for bringing you up (food, shelter, care, love, education,etc.etc.).
Another, perhaps better, reason is for thanking his parents specifically for supporting his choice to be a gamer.
The raising you get from your parents is only "fair" because they were raised in turn. But of course if they do a "good" job, perhaps better than they were raised by their own parents, you could thank them by doing something like this (in which case, they did a good job by supporting/allowing him be a progamer).
Anyways thanks for the review!
Also, haha at the guy "screw you ban me" rofl

They should know how to spend/invest money on their own. Because a pro-gamer that's been playing SC all his life knows jack about investing. I doubt he would be satisfied with 3% APY on DCs or venture stocks offered by some shady dealer, so he lets his mother make investment decisions. I see nothing out of the ordinary here.

Cultural thing. I wonder if there is any western culture/family who does the same thing like almost all Asian families.

Q: We were anticipating some kidn of ceremony, but did not see any. Do you regret not doing it?
A: It was difficult to do ceremonies. I did not know the timing when Camera goes on me. I plan on studying cameras so I can do my ceremony at the right timing.
hahahaha! man this guy really cracks me up, how can you not love someone of thinks things like these?
|
I love Team Liquid and OGs, but MC just seems too cocky and egotistical to me. I understand the need for confidence, but saying you would have won even playing another race just seems BM to me. And practicing your camera timings?? I would say focus on your game or you might not have those cameras on you again.
On the other hand, kudos to him for giving money to family and his team, so he can't be all that bad. But I will not ever be cheering for him to win again.

Sweet im liking this guy more and more! A korean pro with a personality on stage woo! bring some western flare to the east!
Also curious y no1 is asking for a buff to the terran since they came in second 3 seasons in a roll! its 'obvious' the other two races are far too OP... god cant even type this with a straight face. XD

Someone is taking e-Sports too seriously. "KeepYaCoolBro" and enjoy. It's called entertainment and MC delivers. And idk how you describe MC as egotistical. Its baffling to me.

I doubt the camera timing is the reason why he didn't do any ceremonies. He's 19 in front of such a huge crowd he probably just got nervous. He seemed so awkward holding that trophy in the finals.
|
Yes, the reason that he chooses to give much of his earnings to his parents can be traced all the way back to Confucius. Confucius espoused an ideology that emphasized hierarchical piety...or to word it better, the relationship between kids and parents, leader and subjects, older brother and younger brother. Benevolence. Western culture, on the other hand, emerged from what can be traced back to the platonic era, whereby ideas such as the importance of the state was highest (refer to Plato's Republic)

I been rooting for a Toss player to win GSL since the start. So glad that MC won. Funny how my girlfried says the same thing about MC "too cocky and egotistical". But me on the other hand feel like what he is doing and saying is great. I'm glad a guy who isn't afraid to say how he really feels is on top now makes fo GGs in the furture when rivals meet up. But this is how everything works in sports. Some people like the player some don't, thats why we are fans.
I'll be cheering for MC to win every match he is in!!!

Your average korean parent QQs about how you need to become a doctor or a lawyer like you QQ about sc2 balance, so you need to keep them satisfied

Nicely done. I am looking for his future games as they are inspiring for me as a Protoss player
