IMNesTea, Hitting his prime in his 30's.

The word 'reserve progamer' has always followed him around. The nickname came from the fact that he debuted after finishing his military services, and that he was a little older than others. However, he definitely had the potential. Even though he was older than others, his game sense and devotion were strong weapons.

Unfortunately, he had become a mere team play zerg in one brief moment. Team play disappeared from proleague, and he too, disappeared from people's minds. Above was IMNesTea's story of his SCBW career.

IMNesTea's official record since he started his progaming life on KTF in 2006 is 2-11. His most recent game was a loss in the 2009 MSL Survivor Tournament Season 1 Group 10 loser's group against Light. IMNesTea still fulfilled his duties in team play, however. His record in team play, which is now impossible to dig up, is 27-21, an outstanding 24-15 when paired with Reach.

IMNesTea was that kind of a player. He had the potential, but he was old, and he was one of the players that disappeared off the scene as team play was no longer played. However, the past story is now a tale he can tell others while laughing and enjoying a shot of soju. IMNesTea, who now returned to the world of progaming through SC2, is a champion that no one can ignore, or doubt. We had a meeting with him, the champion of GSL Season 2, and the leader of the zerg race along with TSL_FruitDealer.

▶GSL Season 2 champion IMNesTea!

IMNesTea quit his coaching job quietly and qualified for GSL Season 1. That is how his SC2 progamer life started. After getting knocked out in the round of 64, his characteristic motivation was lit on fire, and won GSL Season 2. IMNesTea is a legit champion. He is one of the superstars that took home the prize money of 100 million won.

Q. I want to know how you you've been doing since winning GSL Season 2.
A. It's been hectic. I thought that I could rest once I won, but since there's another season going on, I'm lacking practice time. I'm worried that I won't get good results due to lack of practice.

Q. Has anything changed after winning?
A. I like to play games both in the team house and in internet cafes. There are many people that recognize me now. Sometimes, they buy me a drink saying that they're a fan. At home, my family disagreed with me quitting the coaching job and it was difficult persuading them. I figured that they would support me once I achieved good results, and that's happening right now. They're supporting me more than anyone else. Many things have changed.

Q. You've been a progamer for a long time, you must have wanted to win.
A. I won a lot of tournaments as an amateur. I had the desire to win individual leagues once I joined a team as well. However, they told me to play team play games as I joined the team. I rejected the offer at first, but since no one else wanted to do it, they kept trying to persuade me. That's why I started, and afterwards, I had a problem with the contract and was getting old, so I couldn't play 1v1 games anymore. I wanted to be a progamer, not because I wanted to earn salary, but because I wanted to win. However, I didn't have the time to practice 1v1, and had to give up that dream. The thing I really wanted was to win. My career eventually shifted over to being a coach and I thought my progaming life would end just like that.

I suffered a lot and had a lot to think about. When I first started playing SC2, it wasn't to become a progamer. Xian (current Hwaseung coach, also a GSL Season 1 qualifier) came over one day and I wanted to beat him, and eventually, I had a thought that I could actually do well with this. Ah, the question was about winning right? I got side-tracked in my story (laughs). It was a win that shook away 10 years of grudge. I don't think I can be satisfied with just one win. I've suffered for 10 years, it doesn't just go away at once.

Q. You must be thinking that it was a good decision to start playing SC2.
A. Right now, I think so. I think it was a very good decision. Gaming is the only thing I know how to do. Coach Kang Dong-Hoon kept persuading me to play, he really helped me out a lot. SC2 is a game that changed my life. Well, it did turn my life around (laughs). I don't think SCBW was my destiny, but luck is on my side now. It feels like I'm just hitting my prime.

▶Unpopular past of IMNesTea, the sorrow of a team play zerg.

IMNesTea was not a well-known player. Even though he did his job in team play games, people were not as interested in him compared to other 1v1 players. Superstars were the ones that excelled in 1v1 play, therefore, IMNesTea was relatively unknown. This is why we mentioned his 'past' and 'team play zerg' first.

Q. Why did you first start SCBW?
A. I wanted to start when I was 20, 21 years old, but my family told me to finish my military services first. I still built on my skill while participating in amateur tournaments. I used to practice with players that were popular back then, and all the sudden, one of the players that I was close with won an individual league. My initial thought was that, I could win too if he was able to do it. I wanted to test my talent, and I really liked games. I thought that progamer was a job made for me.

Q. You finished your military services very fast.
A. I was enrolled in the defense industry department. I started when I was 21 and finished at 23. The company wanted me to keep working, so I did, but I started to play games when I was 24. There were countless amateur tournaments back then. My income was substantial without being a pro, so I didn't have that big of a desire to become one. However, I became greedy after playing for a year. I wanted to sweep the pro scene just like how I swept the amateur scene (laughs).

Q. You joined KTF, you must have been really happy.
A. There were many offers before that too, but I wanted to go to a big team such as SK Telecom or KTF. I got a test with the help of a friend's recommendation, and I was excited to play for a prestigious progaming team. I was very higly ranked within the team even though there were many famous players. I thought that I could do well, but the team play offer came up one day. I should have rejected until the end... I regret it now, but I think it was a good experience if I look back.

Q. I remember you did quite well in team play games.
A. I think the record was decent. I thought that I should do what the team wanted me to do since I'm a part of the team. Even if I didn't want to, I had to play the assigned games so I still tried my best.

Q. It must have been harder since the team was slumping.
A. Team play was played out in the third set, but there were many cases of us winning and the team losing. I would have felt better had the team won, but it was very off-beat in a way. If other players did poorly, we would win, and when we lost, they did very well (laughs). Just because I was good at team play, it didn't mean that the team did well, so it wasn't something I wanted to do. It was harder since the team did so bad although I was determined to do well at my position. I also had an issue with unequal treatment. I was close with IMTT and ST_sigamari, and there were differences in the ways they treated me, but I didn't really care. [note: not sure what he means, he just says he knew those 2 and there were differences]

Q. Also, KTF was a 'SCBW powerhouse'. You must have felt insignificant.
A. It was extremely hard. Other zerg players like ChoJJa and YellOw's popularity were through the roof. No one recognized me no matter how well I did. I needed to overcome these players, but there was a limit with team play. I'm very disappointed that I didn't overcome that limit.

Q. As team play disappeared, you quit your progaming life?
A. That's right. I felt helpless knowing that team play was no longer going to be played. I rarely played a 1v1 match. There were times when I went to qualifiers not even knowing the maps. Team play zergs just practice the same things repeatedly, so my 1v1 game sense dropped off naturally. I'm sure other team play zergs went through the same situation as me. It dropped to the point that I literally gave up playing 1v1. Players like Calm was able to succeed since he played both team play and 1v1. I too, played both at the start, but as my career progressed, I was strictly playing team play games. Still, I think Calm is an incredible player.

Q. You were a coach on KTF as well?
A. The supervisor offered the job during the off-season. I agreed since I've been a player for a long time and they needed a coach. My feel for 1v1 play for the most part has disappeared and I wasn't getting any younger, so I agreed. However, I realized that the coaching job wasn't for me. There are many things a coach needs to do other than taking care of the players. There are people questioning 'what's a coach got to do?', but there are tons of things to do. It was already that hard, but the thought that it didn't fit me only made it harder. I joined a progaming team, because I wanted to play games and thought more of how this wasn't what I wanted as time passed by. Our zerg players not performing well was one other reason.

▶IMNesTea meets SC2, evolves from 'ZergBong' to 'NesTea'.

'Xian and TSL_FruitDealer made IMNesTea of today?'

Even though he sacrificed himself to play team play games, his blood still had the desire to win. What eventually led IMNesTea to SC2 was his thirst for victory. He may look emotionless during games, calm and peaceful in nomal life, but he says that his inside feeling when he loses is greater than what we can imagine. He wasn't able to shrug off his instinctive desire and 'instinctively' started SC2, and started a new life with the ID 'NesTea'.

Q. What was it like to first play SC2?
A. I heard that beta was out for quite some time, but I didn't really want to play. I wasn't going to play games at all, since I was quite old, I tried to quit. I want to win more than anyone else, I hate to lose, and I first started to beat Xian. I didn't really have a special feeling towards the game. I had no idea that I could end up winning like this.

Q. I heard that IM's coach Kang Dong-Hoon was persistent in trying to convert you.
A. The reason I started was because of coach Xian. He was a zerg player in SCBW, but he played protoss in SC2. We met up one day and he challenged me to a match, I got steamrolled at first. Wow, I never thought I would lose like that. My pride was badly damaged and I told him to meet again in a week and practiced madly in internet cafes. However, I lost again. I had to practice for another week until finally beating him.

I was close with TSL_FruitDealer from before and he was quite famous in the SC2 community. I had a goal to beat him and practiced slowly. Even my family told me not to play (laughs). At that point, coach Kang Dong-Hoon really gave me a boost. I've been friends with him since my amateur days, so he thought highly of my talent. That's how I bravely started out the game.

Coach Kang Dong-Hoon = IMNesTea's older brother was intimidating, but I even tried to visit his house to persuade him to keep playing. I was sure that he could succeed (laughs).

Q. How do SCBW and SC2 compare?
A. Since I only played team play games in SCBW, my hands couldn't keep up with 1v1 play. In that regard, it wasn't bad that I got to learn new mechanics for SC2. There are many similarities between the 2 games, such as the builds and the management flows, but there are still differences. You have an advantage in SCBW if your hand can move faster, but SC2 has a system that allows you to do everything without particularly fast hand movements. It's a game that people with slower hand speed can succeed at. In ZvZ, the builds somewhat overlap each other as well. They're similar games, but they're ultimately different.

Q. I can see old progamers do well in SC2 for a long period of time.
A. I kind of agree. If you're young, your hand moves faster and you can naturally do well, but it's hard to avoid the decrease in hand speed as you age. SC2's interface allows you to do everything effectively, but the brain games are important. It's very important, so it's hard to keep the top spot as a player. SC2 is a game where you both win and lose consistently.

Q. So it's hard for someone like 'ultimate weapon' Flash to emerge in SC2?
A. Although the game hasn't been out for a long time, I think it'll be difficult to see a true bonjwa. We have to look at the patches and other aspects of the game, but it seems unlikely that the game would produce a bonjwa. I think it'll take at least 2 years until we see a player like Flash.

Q. You were knocked out in the round of 64 in season 1, wasn't it disappointing? You must have thought about quitting.
A. Not at all (laughs). I started playing on August 1st, the day I lost to Xian. One day, I heard that there was this big tournament, so I participated for fun without telling my family. Interestingly, I qualified. I basically had no understanding of the game at the time so I was just hoping to lose 1:2 in the first round. I only knew how to make zerglings and roaches. It's obvious that I was knocked out, but TSL_FruitDealer went on to win. That set a fire under my skin. Him winning that season created what I am today (laughs).

Q. What do you talk about when you meet with TSL_FruitDealer?
A. Nothing much. We meet occasionally to have some soju and to have dinner. We've been participating in amateur tournaments, sometimes taking first and second place together. I beat him a lot back in those days, but he really grew a lot. The thought 'if TSL_FruitDealer can do it, why can't I' was the turning point. When we meet, we talk a little about the game, but nothing too interesting. We usually just talk about our lives.

▶Owner of 100 million won, but money isn't everything.

With 3 open seasons prior to the official 2011 GSL seasons, the hottest issue GomTV announced was the prize money, because it was the biggest prize pool in e-sports history. It was an opportunity to take home 100 million won in a month-long tournament. Everyone must have dreamed about winning that 100 million won, but to IMNesTea, it wasn't just money. It was a reward for all the work he has done in the past, and it became his motivation to keep playing SC2 for a very long time.

Q. How does the amount of 100 million won feel to you?
A. Since I started playing as an amateur, I finally feel like I'm doing what I've been wanting to do. It feels like a reward to my life so far. It a gift that God gave me (laughs).

Q. Your parents must have been happy that you won.
A. My brother or my mom don't really care much for money. It's good to earn money, but they wanted fame more than anything, almost 90%. Winning in a big tournament was key. They always tell me that money will follow if you chase after fame. I once thought 'I really want the 100 million won', but I eventually wanted to win more than I wanted to get my hands on the prize money.

Q. I know that your mom came to watch you play in the finals.
A. They were happier than anyone else, my brother and my mom that is. I saw my mom cry, and I was happy and thankful, it was just an unbelievable moment. Nothing else came up in my mind other than the thought of my mom after I received the GG in set 7. She told me how proud she was, it felt very good.

Q. Is this your first time getting full support from your family?
A. No, my dad helped me out a lot before he passed away. He helped me thinking that I'd become something big, even though other family members didn't like the idea. I wouldn't be what I am now had I not started off that way.

IMNesTea's eyes became red as he started talking about his mom and dad. It looked like he was about to cry, but soon, he continued his story with a smile. This victory wasn't just a simple victory for him. It brought him a new life along with invaluable memory that cannot be replaced by 100 million won.

Q. Your family must support you more than they did before.
A. My brother has changed now that I won. He's watching all my games now. He used to scold me for coming home at 2~3am, but now, he asks me why I came back so fast if I return home early (laughs). He also provides me with nutritional goods (laughs).

Q. You must have wanted to lead a long progaming life through this victory.
A. I can't say until when, but I want to go as far as I can. I want to show that age is just a number and it's still possible at old age.

Q. I personally thought of this. At school, the teacher asks my children 'what does your father do for living?' and they'll proudly say 'progamer!'.
A. I like it. For that to happen, I have to be a progamer until I'm 40... (laughs). I really like it. I can play games with my children and their friends, be a proud father. Kids like games (laughs).

Q. Did your former teammates congratulate you on your win?
A. There were a few players that I was close with, but it was hard to keep in contact with them once I left the team. It was awkward for me to call them, so I was hoping they'd call first... (laughs). Still, many people called me saying congratulations. Even coach Lee Ji-Hoon called me (laughs). Coach Hery called me as well, and I plan on visiting them, with lots of food (laughs).

Q. What do you think will happen if SCBW superstar players played SC2?
A. I'm already excited. Already (laughs). I think it'll be fun if I set up the stage for them and popular players convert later on. I think it'll be amazing if players like Flash and Jaedong converted over. I imagined a picture of SCBW superstars facing off against SC2 superstars, and it's quite entertaining. I think the fans will like it as well.

Q. That's why people often argue how well Flash and Jaedong would do if they switched.
A. I think they'll do well, but I think I can compete with them since this is SC2. I don't think anyone could argue that they won't be top class players after the switch. However, it'll be hard for them to achieve their usual 70~80% win rate due to the nature of the game. SC2 can go either way, win or lose, and it'll be hard to see a bonjwa. I still think they'll do quite well though. There will be a lot of top class players if they all convert to SC2, I think it'll be something like that.

▶IMNesTea is challenging for another win, 'I want to win when I'm 30 years old too.'

IMNesTea is currently progressing. He is still strong as ever after his victory in GSL Season 2. There are no signs of him slowing down. He is getting closer to another win in season 3, step by step.

In a month, IMNesTea will be 30 years old, he will be another 30 year old progamer. He has now become addicted to winning after a thrilling victory 2 months shy of being 30 years old. He has stated that 'I want to win even when I'm 30 years old' and wants everyone to think 'I can do well if I don't give up, just like IMNesTea.'

Q. You must want to win in season 3 too, what do you think about it?
A. I think I can get to the final if I beat MakaPrime in the round of 16. He is the biggest obstacle right now. My style has been revealed since I played so many ZvT's lately. I want to play against TSL_FruitDealer in the round of 4, I will beat anyone on my way that tries to stop me.

Q. I want to know what kind of a player you wish to become in the future.
A. I want to be a player that provokes the thought 'how can he do so well when he is so old'. I want to become a hope for the younger generation. I want to lead a progamer life leading by example and I will show that nothing is impossible.

Q. You will start off 2011 with Code S, your mindset must be very special.
A. I'm really going to be 30 years old next year (laughs). I want to feel the emotion of winning as the Code S seasons start in my 30's. I will put every effort into it, so I won't have any regrets. I want to win in Code S. I also want to win in my 30's.

Q. You are currently active as a member of Team IM?
A. It feels like the early days of SCBW. Since SC2 is just starting out, things like sponsorships aren't too common, but it'll be nice if many companies supported us. There are teams that run on the manager's pocket money, and our team overcame that situation now that I won (laughs). If our team does well, and play against players that work just as hard, I'm sure sponsorships will fly in with the support of the general public. IM fighting, all the SC2 progaming teams fighting!

Q. Any comments to the e-sport fans?
A. Players are trying very hard to show entertaining games, I hope you look at them in a pretty way (laughs). I hope you love us all. Oh, a lot of people are fighting over SCBW and SC2 on community websites. It's disappointing, I want everyone to enjoy the games whether it's SCBW or SC2.

It is interviews like this that really gets you to like a progamer. I was rooting for Foxer at the finals and was a little upset that he lost, but now I am glad NesTea won. Hope he goes far in GSL3.

Hahaha, wow what a crazy thought. I don't know why but I just wasn't a huge fan of his playstyle in GSL2, but man this interview was very endearing. I hope he continues to do well next year. His age alone serves as an inspiration for the future of e-sports.

Thank you for the translation! Nestea is a great role model for sc2, when I read the part about his parents i felt touched. I hope he can continue through GSL 3, continuing to show us great games. As long as its not Z v Z finals... : )

Thanks for the translation! One point though: when he refers to Kim Yoon Hwan he is almost certainly talking about KT coach Hery and not STX player Calm.

Thanks for the translation. This was an awesome interview. It's always interesting to learn about pro-gamers backgrounds and adversities they have overcome. Hopefully NesTea can continue to do well and keep us all entertained.

Oh, my mistake, for some reason I just assumed he would be Calm.... :p
[edit] Actually, I don't know, cuz nestea mentions Kim Yoon Hwan being where he is right now because he played both matchups.
Calm is an A team 1v1er while Hery is a retired? coach... Not sure if nestea meant to say Hery is retired cuz he was so good... LOL

His record in team play, which is now impossible to dig up, is 27-11, an outstanding 24-15 when paired with Reach.

This doesn't make sense. How can his overall record have LESS losses than a specific team that makes up a portion of those games?

Pretty amazing interview apart from that though.

Awesome interview. Before reading it, I felt negative predisposition towards NesTea because of how close his victory was and the way he won by defending while Foxer messed up. Now it's all gone, and I'm a fan of the old guy. Yet, I'm a bigger fan of Marine King, just because he made playing terran fun for me.

Hmm you're right, but I think I just straight out got that from the original interview... lemme check again.
[edit] turns out I made a typo it should be 27-21 and 24-15 paired with Reach

You know what'd be awesome? If the company Nestea actually sponsored him. If he wins another GSL, its actually not that inconceivable.

He seems to be a really humble and genuine guy from this interview, and I can't see anybody not liking him after reading this. I really like his idea of SCBW superstars vs. SC2 superstars though. That would be pretty crazy, but the SC2 superstars would stomp Jaedong/Flash and co. if they don't have much prep time.

I'm a bit disturbed by this. Is he paying for the team from his own pocket? That seems wrong.

He could be saying that since he won, there are more sponsors willing to support them now, and I wouldn't be surprised if he donated a part of it to the team anyways...

It's pretty much certain that hes helping to keep his team afloat because of the lack of sponsorships. It was like this in the early days of SCBW as well and is well documented ie Xellos/Coach Cho.

I thought it meant that his win brought enough fame to the team that some sponsor picked them up.
