no one really knows. any answer you get is speculation but if i were to speculate i would say super-high-happy-fun-time-sparkle-TO-THE-MAX-SETTINGS.

depending on res that can play like 90% of games no problem on med-high so take that for what it's worth.

$400 isn't going to get you much on that list. It'll get the 955, the DDR3 RAM, and the PSU, but nothing else.

955 C3 Stepping $160
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=955-_-19-103-808-_-Product
Easier OC than C2 955, and for some reason it's cheaper.

DDR3 $100
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145263&cm_re=DDr3-_-20-145-263-_-Product
I'm not sure why you want 1067 RAM, since AM3 supports 1333 natively...

550W Antec PSU $60
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016&cm_re=Antec_550W-_-17-371-016-_-Product
High quality Antec PSU

That leaves you $80 for both mobo and Windows 7 Ultimate.

In which case you aren't actually upgrading, you're just building a new computer.

I did say it was sort of a complete overhaul, I dont need to worry about W7 at the moment but mostly the Mobo and PSU. This is gonna be bought over a period, I always look for discount stuff first.

Newegg occasionally has DDR3 ram pretty cheap like sub $90. I remember the gskill Ripjaws 4gb was $85 earlier last month.

Mobo is actually pretty easy, but it can depend on how far you want to go with your board. There are loads of USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s out on the market now. However, if you want to be able to OC that Phenom II 955 well, then you will need a board with the 790 chipset. They range from around $140-200ish depending if you want better xfire/SLi support and USB3.0 + SATA 6GB/s

Well considing they were running sc2 years back off 8800gtx and 9800gtx is about the same as it just a G92 vs a g80 chip and the E8400 is just about as power gaming dual core cpu as you can get i'd say you'd do fine. Idealy sc2 will want quad cores as it is a rts game and to specualte like most modern rts games will love quads.

Really it depends on your resolution i would think sc2 wouldn't have super high specs and you'd be fine up to about 1920x1080 on high settings.

Random question, but would there be a significant difference in gaming performance between a p55 i5 rig and an x58 i7 assuming both were using single graphics cards and comparable parts otherwise?

Well one of the main selling points of the X58 is that it supports 2 PCIe X16 slots in Crossfire/SLi whereas P55 usually supports at most X8 (though the nForce 200 Chip allows X16 in SLi).

The typical i7 also has Hyperthreading which the i5 lacks, which makes it a bit more futureproof. Triple channel memory is worthless. (however there is also the idea that the 6 core i7s are dropins..)

Hyperthreading is essentially worthless in gaming though, the higher frequencies that the i5s and such can acoomplish works out much better for gaming as the money saved just bumps you a grade or two up on the GPU.

Triple channel memory has its uses, just not in gaming really, again.

Well if you overclock, you end up turning of turboboost as a result anyways. I don't really know many people who run i5/i7 at stock speeds.

You only turn off turboboost if you are trying to push insanely high OCs though, for most of us, we'll simply be using OC as a cheap way of boosting performance while maintaining stock or even below stock voltages. For that situation, the better turbo that i5s have really shows over the 920s.

Really, why push an i5 over 4ghz when you can do 3.6~3.8 easily on stock voltage and still enjoy turboboost AND have a good power consumption. If I had a ton of money to blow just to churn out synthetic benchmark numbers, maybe, but otherwise, nah.

For a stable OC over 3.6GHz I think most people would turn off TurboBoost for more stability.

It would be less of a problem if the multiplier was unlocked in the nonextreme i7s, but if I set my BC at 180, and then using 2 cores and seeing my multiplier jump up 4 would scare the shit out of me

I have my i7 on 3.66, Turbo on, undervolted, perfectly stable. i5 only performs even better iirc, I think it is supposed to do fine on 3.8 and turbo.

920's turbo only sets the multiplier 1 higher, i5s are 2 or 4? Forgot.

920s set the multiplier to +1 until single core where it gets +2

750s set the multiplier to +1 until dual core where it gets +4

So yeah turboboost on the 920 doesn't do much since you never really get to single core, but for the 750, jumping up 4 on your multiplier would be really fucking scary for me.

Edit: I underestimated how smart the i5/i7 series are with temps and stuff, though if you have ample cooling to allow Turbo Boost, you have ample cooling to just throw that BC up.

I don't really see the point, why cruise something at such a high speed all the time where there is no need for it? Like I said, outside of synthetic benchmarks, the benefits you enjoy from such a measure is minimal at best. If you just don't care about the power bills and the lifespan of your processor though, I suppose these considerations aren't really necessary.

The thing is that turbo also enjoys additional benefit from OC, if you can sit at 3.6ghz and have the multiplier bumped up by 4 when situations calls for it, it is really by far more useful than having them all sitting at 4ghz constantly as far as normal usage goes.

Most people wont use an exterme oc all the time only if their system isn't getting the fps they wanted ie above 60 else most people will settle for just using a mild oc. And if you're like me strapped on cash you run a low watt dual core that undervolted for games :D

Really i5-750 is all you need in games very littel diff from that and higher end cpus right now. Esp if it's a single card set up a P55 would be perfect hell most cases a P55 sli / crossfire does little diff between the x58 full bandwidth because most times cards don't use near full bandwidth of pcie 2.0 x16 so dual x8 works fine. But tri fire and 3/quad sli P55 is shitty without Nf200 chipset to give a boost to bandwidth. But i mean if you're going quadfire you should probably not use such cheap parts and might as well go high end.

Well it depends on the card. xfiring 5850s shows a notable decrease in FPS (I think it was in a Tom's Hardware bench), whereas xfiring 5770s probably won't make much of a difference at all. The X58 is the enthusiast platform after all, so it has the extra features that an enthusiast would want, not necessarily the mainstream features. Triple channel RAM makes a difference when in extreme circumstances, like dual PCIe X16, and hyperthreading.

Still, the best reason for a gamer to get the X58 is the dual PCIe X16 imo. Though the i7 1366 does OC better under stock volts, if that kind of stuff matters to you.

... drop in 6 cores :D:D:D

Edit: The reason I'm considering running an AM3 system over a P55 system is because of the Dual X16 slots, and because of the dropin 6 cores.

Okay so i've got all the hardware and stuff figured out but i have no clue how many fans i need.

Allow me to specify, there is a fan on the graphics card, then the obvious Power supple, and Chip, one on the front for the Hard Drives. Does there need to be a fan on the side or top for pulling in or pushing out air from the motherboard and stuff?

the only fans you'll need are for the case. buy a nice case -> problem solved!

Different cases have different configurations for fans. Many will have an intake towards the front of the case, and a output at the top/back or something similar.

There are awesome cases at every price point.
