It'll get the 955, the DDR3 RAM, and the PSU, but nothing else. 955 C3 Stepping $160 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103808&cm_re=955-_-19-103-808-_-Product Easier OC than C2 955, and for some reason it's cheaper. DDR3 $100 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145263&cm_re=DDr3-_-20-145-263-_-Product I'm not sure why you want 1067 RAM, since AM3 supports 1333 natively... 550W Antec PSU $60 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371016&cm_re=Antec_550W-_-17-371-016-_-Product High quality Antec PSU That leaves you $80 for both mobo and Windows 7 Ultimate. In which case you aren't actually upgrading, you're just building a new computer. I did say it was sort of a complete overhaul, I dont need to worry about W7 at the moment but mostly the Mobo and PSU. This is gonna be bought over a period, I always look for discount stuff first. ![]()

Mobo is actually pretty easy, but it can depend on how far you want to go with your board. There are loads of USB 3.0 and SATA 6GB/s out on the market now. However, if you want to be able to OC that Phenom II 955 well, then you will need a board with the 790 chipset. They range from around $140-200ish depending if you want better xfire/SLi support and USB3.0 + SATA 6GB/s

Idealy sc2 will want quad cores as it is a rts game and to specualte like most modern rts games will love quads. Really it depends on your resolution i would think sc2 wouldn't have super high specs and you'd be fine up to about 1920x1080 on high settings.

The typical i7 also has Hyperthreading which the i5 lacks, which makes it a bit more futureproof. Triple channel memory is worthless. (however there is also the idea that the 6 core i7s are dropins..)

Triple channel memory has its uses, just not in gaming really, again.

Really, why push an i5 over 4ghz when you can do 3.6~3.8 easily on stock voltage and still enjoy turboboost AND have a good power consumption. If I had a ton of money to blow just to churn out synthetic benchmark numbers, maybe, but otherwise, nah.

It would be less of a problem if the multiplier was unlocked in the nonextreme i7s, but if I set my BC at 180, and then using 2 cores and seeing my multiplier jump up 4 would scare the shit out of me

920's turbo only sets the multiplier 1 higher, i5s are 2 or 4? Forgot.

750s set the multiplier to +1 until dual core where it gets +4 So yeah turboboost on the 920 doesn't do much since you never really get to single core, but for the 750, jumping up 4 on your multiplier would be really fucking scary for me. Edit: I underestimated how smart the i5/i7 series are with temps and stuff, though if you have ample cooling to allow Turbo Boost, you have ample cooling to just throw that BC up.

The thing is that turbo also enjoys additional benefit from OC, if you can sit at 3.6ghz and have the multiplier bumped up by 4 when situations calls for it, it is really by far more useful than having them all sitting at 4ghz constantly as far as normal usage goes.

Really i5-750 is all you need in games very littel diff from that and higher end cpus right now. Esp if it's a single card set up a P55 would be perfect hell most cases a P55 sli / crossfire does little diff between the x58 full bandwidth because most times cards don't use near full bandwidth of pcie 2.0 x16 so dual x8 works fine. But tri fire and 3/quad sli P55 is shitty without Nf200 chipset to give a boost to bandwidth. But i mean if you're going quadfire you should probably not use such cheap parts and might as well go high end.

Still, the best reason for a gamer to get the X58 is the dual PCIe X16 imo. Though the i7 1366 does OC better under stock volts, if that kind of stuff matters to you. ... drop in 6 cores :D:D:D Edit: The reason I'm considering running an AM3 system over a P55 system is because of the Dual X16 slots, and because of the dropin 6 cores.

Allow me to specify, there is a fan on the graphics card, then the obvious Power supple, and Chip, one on the front for the Hard Drives. Does there need to be a fan on the side or top for pulling in or pushing out air from the motherboard and stuff?
