Asus P5B G965 Intel Core Duo 2 E6400 (base clock 2.1GHz per core, overclocked to 2.5GHz) 4GB DDR 2 @ 400MHz (4x1 GB comb) NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320MB (overclocked, can't remember exact values - been a while since I tinkered with all this) Windows XP 32 bit (may switch to Windows 7 after they've worked out the childs' diseases; won't touch Vista with a 10-foot pole)
Enough HD space (+1TB). Oldie, but extremely solid for the money paid (was ~1000 euros some years ago).

I helped my friend with upgrading his computer and it is now
Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 3GB DDR 2 @ 666MHz ATI Radeon 4770 512MB
This should be fine right?
EDIT: It was upgrade from Intel Pentium D 280 1GB DDR 2 ATI Radeon X300

800mhz ram is standard 666 seems pretty slow, considering most laptops run around 500-something. the 4770 is nearly equivalent to the 4850.

The DDR2 666 is kind of a waste of money, i would've gone with DDR2-800, or even 1066, its pretty cheap.

i think it will run sc2/d3. Will do just fine. I seem to be getting ignored left and right when I say Blizzard makes their games available to a very broad spectrum of computer users, including extremely low-tech ones. People here are going to be somewhere between pleasantly surprised and flabbergasted as to how low the system requirements are going to be to run SC2 and D3 I really wish you were right, dude.

The motherboard is an ASUS P5LD2 which its max RAM capability is 667MHz I think (http://usa.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=194&model=536&modelmenu=1)

You'll be able to play, but I'm not sure at what settings with that video card(Lowish/Medium)? If at all possible, I would upgrade that card(You can upgrade to a 9800 GTX for around $130 assuming you don't need a bigger PSU). or at least smth like 8600gt or even 8800gs/gt for around 40 E graphic cards get cheap very fast

Big thanks to ghermination for his post on making a low-mid cost machine. I used his post for guidance and ordered this:
Intel Pentium E6300 Wolfdale 2.8GHz 2MB L2 Cache 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 GeForce 9600 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 WD Caviar 1TB 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s
Subtotaled ~420 USD with case, fans, power, and mobo so I'm pretty happy.

i agree with mahnini. I mean is it that hard to wait so you can base your system around actual requirements instead of speculations?

Subtotaled ~420 USD with case, fans, power, and mobo so I'm pretty happy. the e6300 is the exact same processor as the e5200 except with a .3ghz difference most likely due to a higher multi. you spent $20 for .3ghz. 20$ that couldve bumped your 9600gt to a 9800gt or hd4850.
and as far as 1tb harddrives go seagate 7200.12 is the best. there's no reason to pick any other drive unless you really REALLY need to save ~5$. if you like WD and just prefer them that's fine i'm not gonna tell you what to buy. but as a gaming machine you couldve spent the same amount for ~50% more performance from your video card.
this is precisely what i was talking about in my previous post -_-
i'm being too mean. if you read what was here before i apologize.

That's disappointing... does better shopping in this area just come with experience or should I have been more patient in seeking advice?

downloaded the arkham asylum demo from steam last night, and it won't run on my computer. now I'm scared that I won't be able to play SC2

My computer can't run SC2. I know it's a fact 100%. gg.
When Starcraft 2 comes out, I guess I have to play Broodwar with the remaining players until I somehow win the lottery and upgrade my computer...

I am building a new computer from HP website--I get an educational discount CUP :core i7 6 gig of ram
however I am stuck on choosing between the following GPU...any help guys
512MB ATI Radeon HD 4350 free
1GB ATI Radeon HD 4650 - $60.00 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 $100.00 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 $200.00
so these are my choices? Can I go with the shitty 512 mb ATI then upgrade it later? HP website doesn't tell me what motherboard it uses, so how do i know which GPU to use?

Honestly though, I'm not one to really post negativity but I don't see the point in "Showing off your rig". I mean honestly, you can do that in any computer based forum. What's more important is that if anyone knows the general/minimum/recommended requirements (official, not just look at it and guess) or anyone with an early beta version or knows someone with an early beta version (what THEIR specs are)
I think that matters more than just "Hi I have a $1000 system I built". Ok that gives me or anyone nothing to go on with the question originally posed in the topic "Will it run SC2?".
Just food for thought, if you want to know if your system will run the game...find out from credible sources not what other people have as their system.

The DDR2 666 is kind of a waste of money, i would've gone with DDR2-800, or even 1066, its pretty cheap. Not really, If you are looking at the old Intel set up where the memory controller is not integrated with the cpu, like AMD has been doing for years and now i7 and i5 line up, Getting Ram with extra bandwidth over your CPU does little to jack dittly zip to improving performance.
3 gigs is odd i dislike 2gig then 1 gig set up it's very laptop ish or 3x1gig sticks which is just lol, also means non dual channel, overrated yes but it's like to use.
E7500 FSB native is 1066 and not going into detail about how bandwidth is determined just divide the FSB by 2 1066/2=533Mhz is all that is needed for ram speed to run that cpu at full. Really 666Mhz ram is more then enough for that E7500 non OCed
Although 666Mhz flat instead of 667 is what err 333strap and bahh i can't think but i think it's been strapped weird something like 400 on FSB to Dram blu balh beh
Laptop makers have known this for years it's why laptops usually scrape the bottom on bandwidth for their ram as it is cheaper and anything in excess does not make it really go faster with he exception listed above.

Hey guys what do you think about my laptop for SC2? I am hopeless when comparing specs etc because I never keep myself updated and as soon as I learn something about it i forget it the next day. Do I need to buy a desktop/upgrade my laptop?
