Yesterday I turned on Much Music, and saw the standard mob of fans screaming around the chum building. I wondered which musician was showing up that night, so I watched for a bit.
It turns out this insane group of 14 year olds were freaking out about a movie based on a series of romance novels that hadn't even been released yet. Later that day I watched the new episode of south park and saw that it's theme was the "vampire fad".
Where the hell did this come from? What marketing did these Twilight movie people do to get kids so excited about a movie pre release? It's not like it's a sequel to a popular franchise or something, and I haven't heard of any of the actors before.
To be frank, I feel like an old man and I'm interested as hell to hear what marketing was involved to start this fad, and why it was so effective. Apparently that movie is doing huge coin at the box office as you read this.
they are a "PG" series of romance novels sold at mainly at wallmart, covertly as "vampire" fiction... it was a hick thing initially, mainly in the 13-15 age group, almost 99% girls.
went and saw it with my ex the other day, its a decent move tbh, but hell, all those damn girls screaming in the audience going "AAAAW" at evey kiss and laughing insanely at every supposedly funny line. The move was fairly entertaining but what really had me going was the audience, it was completelly hillarious.
My gf asked me about this movie, and I didn't know shit apart from hearing about the book series beforehand (the original title, Twilight Saga, sounded familiar).
Now I'm really glad she doesn't know a thing about this - but I guess she wouldn't be into vampires anyway.
In august I went over to live with my friend at UCSC for a few days before school started. We were going to chill with a couple girls that we know so we went over on campus an called them over to go to the beach with us. So one of them was sucked into this book and brought it along for the trip. She ended up reading the book the WHOLE TIME we were at the beach and on the trip back. When I talked to her she said that all she has been doing is reading this Twilight series for like the past week or so. She has also painted her nails black and wears black clothing.
I fucking pray she hasn't seen the movie yet. I wanna ask her out to go see it.
i've read the whole series (at the behest of my chick friends) and it really sucks. especially the last book. the first 3 are bad enough to be funny, but the 4th is beyond belief
On November 24 2008 07:32 TryThis wrote: i've heard from alot of people that the movie sucked compared to the books actually. and by people i mean actual fans of the books
Yeah pretty much. I admit I loved the books when they first came out. I know I'm a little older than the intended audience, but I still enjoyed it. The movie completely defiled my version of the story though t.t;;
The books are basically a series of romance novels. Girls love them (especially teen/pre teen girls) because their parents don't recognize them as actual romance novels.
Wowie I just saw this thread and then on tv there's some french talkshow on and it was like "after the break, the actress from some vampire movie or something" NINI nini NINI nini~~
hmm my little sister went to see this and she liked the books. Not the same reaction she had as all these other girls I guess...they went to see it at the movies with her friends and the movie was so bad they started making fun of it in the theatres. apparently they pissed off a lotta little girls and got thrown out lol. Serious buziness, this twilight is
Haha, someone girl on my facebook whose in college 20/21 posted "CANT WAIT TO SEE TWILIGHT" didn't know what it was till now. I guess each person has there own thing. :p
Its a good series of books if you like vampires or romance (Though it does get a bit repetetive at times) and the movie was decent i thought (Like you all said a bit corny).
I actually thought they did alot better with this movie than they have with most others that are based on books. It did its best to emphasize the good parts of the book even though it couldn't exactly capture the feeling the books give without changing too much. (If you actually read the books then you would realize how hard it is to portray what the author wanted through cinema, especially the acting and look of the vampires)

fantasy/sci fi series i really like so far: a song of ice and fire ender's game
imo, it's not really worth buying to read. Ignoring the fact that it reads like a romance novel, it's not a very deep book. I couldn't help being able to predict (correctly) what would happen next.
Ender's game is a science fiction classic at this point- at the same level as some of the isaac asmov books.
lol. I haven't read it but from what I've gathered it's about a girl who falls in love with a vampire and she "risks everything" to be with him.... I heard the movie is dead on w/ the book though.....
so.... Is it worth reading? Not if you have testicles or a developed frontal lobe.
You're better off reading the plethora of good mature non-romance sci-fi or fantasy out there....
ROFL, the opening of that episode reminds me of what goes on at my school. Everyday there is a Halo LAN in the mornings at the library. Then there is another later on in EDD class. Usually, other classes also join the fight, so the network can't handle all the data transmission that it doesn't let the rest of the school use the internet, fucking awesome. The downside is when I want to use the computer for actual school work .
edit: So not to sound off topic, I will say something about Twilight, Our school Library club set up a trip to go see the movie on launch day, with the club consisting of 95% of girls. The rest are fags. Our school even has a trivia that will enter you into a drawing to get a free camera, wtf is up with this story?
I always wished better movies came out of Anne Rice's stuff. At least there was substance and obvious thought put into the stories. True Blood on HBO is fun though. Twilight.. the movie commercials alone make me want to find and murder whoever created it.
OMG STOP MAKING FUN OF TWILIGHT. IT WAS AMAZING! I got pussy that night for taking my girlfriend to the 12 'o' clock premier. so yea it was a good movie just for that :D
It's basically a huge chick flick. Go if you have a girlfriend you want to win kudos points with. Also your girlfriend has to be somewhere the age of 14.

Too bad Anne Rice is such a bitch huh? She doesn't even allow her fans to write fandom etc.

I agree with most of that, and also that the majority of the fans are younger girls, but I've personally met a LOT of girls on a couple of different college campuses that are pretty into it too, including my girlfriend who's almost 21. Though, a lot of those girls have been asian, and in my own personal experience asian girls tend to be a little bit more childish in certain aspects than girls from other races, so that may or may not have something to do with it, but I've definitely seen more than just older asian girls into it. I think the difference is that they don't get as excited as the younger girls about it and don't do any of that "dressing up" stuff that a lot of the younger ones do. At least from what I've seen.
I saw the movie without knowing anything about the story except that it was a romance with vampires, and I personally didn't think it was all that bad of a movie. It was definitely cheesy at parts, and clearly a chick flick, but it was fairly tolerable. The vampires definitely made it more enjoyable for me though.
Let me help you all out. I've read it. That's right I'll effing admit it. Or I sort of read it. Here's how far I got:
Bella(the girl): "So um, your a vampire so uh do you think that we will ever...uh...you know" vampire dude: No.
And that is when I stopped reading.
Oh yeah and I'll you overbearing boyfriends out their? Feminism is dead now. Go ahead and subjugate your girlfriends again as Twilight has now moved us back 20 years. In fact, why don't we hit our kids again too. (Sarcasm)

There may be a lot of younger girls that are unnecessarily excited about the movie, and I think we can all agree that it's an annoying thing, but that's no reason to be a dick to other TL.net members.

K I went to go see this movie like 2 hours ago with my girlfriend because her friend wanted to see it.
Utterly terrible movie. Now im out $10 and wasted 3 hours of my time. CHEESY as hell, horrible action sequences, just... words cant describe how big of a time waste this movie was.
edit - after reading comments, i think its worth noting my girlfriend and her friend(and her friends boyfriend) all hated the movie.

Most Asian (American) girls are immature for their age because that's how they perceive Americans act. Of course, it's always hopelessly outdated, hence why you always see those Asian American girls who are always using terms like, "Like oh my god" or curling hair acting teeny bopper in general. This state is also occasionally shared by Asian American males as well though they tend to act more "hyper masculine" (again throwback to a less mature age). I can elaborate more into how this is all a reaction to treatment (though racism against Asian Americans is thankfully rare in Teamliquid for obvious reasons so kudos on the site for that) to Asian Americans in the US but I think that will derail the thread even further =D.
Suffice to say, I didn't think there is a good or bad to this movie since "chick flicks" are reviewed on a ... different level ... than movies I'm used to, I find found the movie a bit lackluster like many chick flicks. =)
I'll admit I was confused when it exploded like this. I read the books when they came out, and I enjoyed them, but I had no idea it was so popular. I saw previews for the movie, and all of a sudden, this book that I didn't really think anyone else had read had become front page news everywhere. I was sort of shocked.
Think of it this way. It's a cheesy vampire romance novel. If you accept that going in, it can be enjoyable. I came up with a little analogy after dragging my boyfriend to go see it. He thought it was terrible, and described the movie as "softcore porn for 15 year old girls." Which I admitted was a pretty good description.
So I reminded him of some time he had dragged me to some crappy action movie. Now I love action movies. I love *good* action movies. You know, with a somewhat believable plot and likable characters and semi-realistic violence. The movie he dragged me to though, was abysmal. I found myself laughing at the stupidity, the retarded bad guys, the lead girl running through traffic in heels, etc etc. And so I argued with him, "why the hell did you want to see this horrible movie?" And it came down to "hot girls, explosions, guns, etc etc etc". Apparently that's a recipe for a decent action movie. And twilight is no different. "hot guys, vampires, romance, drama, etc etc", and you have a recipe for a movie that will at least attract a lot of viewers.
It's a guilty pleasure. It's not a deep book by any means, but it serves a purpose. To read about sappy vampire romance. Just think of it as another retarded action or horror movie that was so dumb you wanted to find whoever made it and have them euthanized. "Holy shit that was bad", you think to yourself, as it makes millions of dollars.
That being said, the movie sort of sucked, and violated my image of the twilight world. I really hope they do not make movies out of the rest of the series.

I must admit, this is a good argument. There are some horribly bad movies I like just because they have cool action and attractive women. I guess the only annoying part is the girls that go so far as to say how deep Twilight is, and how pure and true their love for its characters. But I guess I was like that as a teenager too.

I'm surprised people like the books. They're very lackluster. Most of the conflicts read like stereotypical anime storylines. ESPECIALLY the male protagonists.
I actually just saw this movie opening day with my fiancee... it was absolutely fucking horrible on every single level, so I won't even begin to describe it, but honestly, I would recommend everyone out there with a lady friend go see this movie. The only thing I have to say is... I got laid like a motherfucker afterwards.

Oh, absolutely. It's 100% a chick flick / teeny bopper movie, that just happens to have vampires. It's like that garbage of a show Charmed.
Why Twilight is not as good a vampire movie as people say it is:
Now, I've not yet seen this apparently phenomenal spectacle of cinema, but I'm willing to bet it's not worth the hype, the millions of status updates that say "Twilight was AMAZING" and all the new photo albums entitled "Twilight premier!!".
It's probably good, but not incredible.. here's why:
1. Wesley Snipes is nowhere in it. 2. Neither is Kate Beckinsale. 3. It's not rated R. 4. The main chick looks totally homely and unkempt. 5. I've heard that there is very little blood or dismemberment.
I guarantee it's not better than any of the Blade or Underworld movies. Wesley Snipes is a total badass whereas Edward Cullen looks like an angst filled Abercrombie model. Not to mention that Snipes broke down racial barriers by being the first black vampire. Kate Beckinsale is totally bangin' hot and you know it, whereas Bella can barely reach an acceptable level of attractiveness. Chicks in vampire moves are supposed to be hot, extremely hot. No vampire in his right mind is going to try and pick up an "average" girl, vampires can do whatever the fuck they want so why would they settle?
No-one cares if you saw it, when you saw it, how many times you saw it, who you saw it with, how incredible it was, how amazing it was, how many times you came at the sight of Edward Cullen, how you dumped your boyfriend immediately afterward because he did not closely enough resemble Edward Cullen, how you wish Edward Cullen was real so maybe he'd pick up a homely looking girl like yourself, how you lock yourself in your dimly lit room, light some candles, and touch yourself while you sit in front of your Edward Cullen shrine… and so on
Grow up, and go watch a real vampire movie, one with explicit sex scenes, shit-tons of blood, and badass vampires who actually pick up hot girls. Suggested viewings are: 1. Interview With a Vampire 2. The Blade Trilogy 3. Underworld 1 & 2 4. Queen of the Damned 5. The Lost Boys 6. Nightwatch and 7. Jesus Christ: Vampire Slayer (yes it's real)
Do not under any circumstances watch Van Helsing … it's just terrible.
Girls and Twilight... -sigh- Atleast you have a chance of getting laid if you are willing to risk lose your manhood to go watch that sissyass shit that they call a good movie.
My friends thought it was alright though; then again i was just going out with a bunch of girls from school. on another note opeth is fun. hot topic has like 0 albums i like though; and jesus christ they were selling so much twilight shit in there ,Vinyls.. soundtracks then like just collectables and shit Mostly sold out too. I'm just totally bewildered who would want to buy that shit

Probably the wrong metaphor to use here ... o_O!
Also how can anyone consider Underworld remotely good...?
Underworld is pure lowest common denominator. It's fucking awesome. It's almost a type of porn in that sense. It's a mixture of action, special effects, Kate Beckinsale in tight leather and exponential increases in the power of combatants. If you take it seriously then yeah, it's not great. In the same way that if you actually seriously look at porn those people have some weird facial expressions and wtf is that crap she's saying. But if you just dive into it then it's really hot.
Underworld and Underworld Evolution may be two of my favourite films. It's a simple premise. Let's have lots of overpowered thingies and make them fight. Then double the power and repeat. And Kate Beckinsale!!! You simply cannot go wrong with it.

I was able to enjoy the Dragonball movie because I went there with the intention of the movie being awful.
Twilight had NO redeeming qualities and it never will. I made the mistake of going to Borders when the fourth book came out. Surrounded by gay men and a swarm of girls and all I wanted was a damn CD, it was horrible. Announcements every 5 minutes counting down till midnight. Ugh, bad memories.

After a "what the hell is twilight?" moment I regrettably asked and had it explained to me too. Sounds horrible and I feel stupider even having heard about it. Why won't it just go away.
