Euromaidan brought the country on the brink of a civil war. This thread is called the Euromaidan thread because everything happening now in the Ukraine is a direct result of the actions of Euromaidan and the collapse of civil society it brought with it.
Oh there you are, we missed you when we were looking at the "assets" of Yanukovich, you were awfully silent there. How come? Makes it look like as if you kinda pretty much know that you're wrong when you say "everything thats happening now is the result of EuroMaidan", especially considering that a "president" like this would be crucified in pretty much any decent country. Germany just did it with a bishop.

Sure Yanukovych is a dick, there were many democratic ways to take down a democratically elected president. Giving free reign to a bunch of radicals and turning the country into a scene from Mad Max is not one of them. At the end of the day one group of people imposed their rule over another group of people, that other group of people is now trying to take their freedom back. If the country does break up it is the direct result of the first group of people trying to undemocratically impose their rule in the first place. Simple as that.
Hell, Fulgencio Batista was a dick, corrupt as hell. I'm sure many Cubans didn't like the Fidel Castro that came after him.

Or maybe you can blame Yanukovich. Because he tried to play "both sides" (EU-Russia) and when he said "no" to Europe/EU (he actually never said "yes" to Russia...) protests started. And that Russia is not just watching, when their Black Ocean station/fleet is in "danger" to be in a NATO state wasn't really surprising to anyone!

Just because it wasn't a surprise doesn't mean we should accept it. Sure, Russia is fighting to survive as a major power. We should admit that so that we better understand the motivation of their decision-makers.
At the same time the interest of pretty much everyone in Europe is in Russia's decline and eventual integration into the western power structure.
Russia has legitimate interests in Ukraine. And also in the Baltics and arguably Poland and the rest of Central Europe. And if those interests are met they will have legitimate interests in Germany, Austria and Finland, etc. Not because Putin is Hitler or because empire building is in the Russian DNA, or any such nonsense. Just because of the logic of power politics.

Russia is trying to antagonize the West. Just because Europe has arrived in the 21st century, that sadly doesn't mean everyone else has. We're probably better offf keeping Russia at bay as long as they're on the road they're on now.

And he is right, Putin instead of fixing the problems on his own backyard, he turns the public opinion against all overwhelming fascists, gays, sodomites and other imaginary destructive forces that come from the west and want to destroy Russia. Ultimately Putin is the force responsible for all the turmoil that currently is going on in Ukraine. Don't get me wrong, I am talking about current situation, the recent past (last 15-20 years) should be attributed to the native oligarchs and native crooked politicians, who were ransacking their compatriots on every occassion.

Wait... What? Why would he quote me about Putin? o.O The discussion was about the cause of this mess, and Putin played with Ukraine and is still playing right now: funny and sad how he wanted Ukraine to stay as its docile satellite, how he send militias to Crimea and Ukraine with no Russian signs and then talk about rights, laws and people's hopes, how Lavrov and Kerry discussed the future of Ukraine in Paris, I imagine them at a 5 star hotel discussing the fate of a country... Ukraine's sovereignty doesn't mean shit to him that's why he allows himself to do whatever he wants. If you advocate Russia policy, you are advocating Putin's actions and I've yet to come across someone on the net advocating Putin's actions without adoring him and defending him on every move he makes.
Maybe it's related to the leader cult that is present in Russia since the tsar empire? Some people firmly believe Eltsine failed as a president but he tried to follow the advises of neo liberals hence a harsh path to the liberal model. But Putin only rode the wave of oil and gas export so some people forgive his reelection and now that he shows Russia's muscle he is a god that has the right to manipulate the media? It looks like in Russia leaders have to be merciless bastards, perhaps this is why Eltsine and Gorbatchev failed to stay in power. + Show Spoiler + Just looking at that makes me so mad, he's the fair representative of greed and moral regress.

By the latest social polls the Party of Regions sits at 6% vote rate, while Euromaidan forces enjoy full support (except Svoboda who dropped quite a bit). "Destroying one's own country" looks like a smart political move. Isn't it, zeo?

Dunno how much longer this can go on. Ukraine will have to defend itself at some point. The problem, of course, is that thats exactly what Putin wants because he is certain nobody will help Ukraine when Russia marches in. Putin cracks me up every time he talks about human rights, respect, fascists and so on. His own Party and his own rhetoric is as nationalistic as it gets. Does he even know what kind of people are in the duma? He should seriously take a look before saying anything else.

What do you expect, this is just a typical world view articulated by the Russian state media.
"Vesti's" coverage of elections in France again evokes the theme of "Europe in flames" and a looming fascist threat to Russia even beyond Ukraine's horizon. The coverage emphasizes the showing of the rightist National Front and says Europe's right-wing parties are poised to make a big showing in the next European Parliament elections. The successes of rightist forces across Europe is attributed to the social tolerance of Western governments, including the legalization of same-sex marriage.
That segment provides an excellent segue to allow the day's broadcasting to end where it began -- in Napoleonic Europe. March 31, we are told, is the 200th anniversary of the Russian Army's triumphal entry into Paris after chasing Napoleon back all the way from Moscow. gay fascism is on the march, only glorious Putin can stop it.
