Natty P coming through for the dreamers

Wow, that's more than two times the length of Trump's SotU if you take out the applauses. That's crazy.
|
since the house doesn't have an actual filibuster or allow for unlimited talk, what's letting her talk for so long? did they simply allow for long debate on a topic?
|
evidently in the house the leadership has a special privilege (tradition) where they're allowed to ask for a minute to make remarks. however, that minute in practice can go pretty much as long as they want.

McConnell all but admitting to going back on his word of holding a vote before the next CR. Wants Dems to take the optics hit and go back on THEIR word first, keeping the government open sans vote, and in turn AGAIN promises to get DACA legislation in.
because we should take his word after it meaning nothing with the last vote.
he hedges the quote by saying ‘if we don’t reach an agreement before the 8th, so long as the government stays open, it is my intention to bring to the floor immigration legislation.’
i remain only marginally hopeful this does happen before friday. but i expect the PR play.

And this is why I don't thin Schumer messed up. With Trump going 'let's have a shut down' and McConnell going back on his word its pretty much a republican shutdown 100%

Never underestimate the Democrats ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

I don’t doubt that we’ll get the vote. But i do expect we’ll sign yet another CR on the empty promise of a hollow Majority Leader. It’s a trade. McConnell gets to make Schumer eat his words on his promise to vote by Feb 8, and gets the vote next week after caving into the CR.

The deal was the Democrats allowing the previous 3 week extension and a DACA vote in that time right?

time sure flies when you're distracted by a dumb memo and a few other things.

There is 0 reason for the Democrats to extend again in exchange for a DACA vote.

I gotta say, the Senate spending bill is a pretty sweet deal for Democrats aside from its leaving DACA unattended to. Not sure how it would pass the House in its current form though.

How is fillibustering not illegal. It is a blatant waste of everyones time and a roadblock to progress.
I submit that you have 30 minutes to speak and after that time is up, everyone else in the room has full freedom to pelt you with rotton tomatoes

EU seeks U.S. compensation for solar panel tariffs: WTO
GENEVA (Reuters) - The European Union has sent the United States a demand for talks on compensation for steep U.S. tariffs imposed on imported solar panels, a World Trade Organization filing showed on Wednesday.
The EU request said Germany was a major exporter and cited WTO rules under which it could demand compensation. The EU move follows similar steps by China, Taiwan and South Korea, but unlike them it did not accuse the United States of breaking WTO rules.
source: www.reuters.com
glad our politicians have a spine with this one at least. Let's see what comes of it (wasn't sure if this belongs into the EU thread or the US thread but since for me it's more a response to something the US did I personally think it belongs more in the US thread as it would not have been a story without US involvement in the first place)

As far as I recall the deal McConnel made was that if no deal went through by the 8th they would move the DACA debate to more normal procedures. The possibility of no deal was baked in. So it's a risk for both sides, but considering that Democrats clearly don't actually care about Dreamers but want to grandstand (see Pelosi, Nancy), there will be no deal.

Lol, "successful spending restraint"....yeah, successful at creating an arbitrary point of contention utilized in service of brinkmanship, maybe.
