I think if those debates had been Trump + 1 on a stage where they're roughly even in the polls, we would have been treated to the same word salad nonsense we got during the main debates when he was talking half the time. And that might have been enough to let the other person eke out a win, especially since they could have done some opposition research on him instead of each other.
Instead we got Rubio and Cruz arguing over each other's immigration reform bills and Christie babbling about being a state prosecutor while everyone else just kinda waits to get asked a question. It's not only that. "Moderate" republican candidates had their hand tied. They couldn't expose Trump for what he is, a fraud exploiting the most vile instincts of people because of two reasons: first, because the party has been doing that for years in a more subtle acceptable manner, and also because it would have angered an incredibly radicalized base. And having the tea party nuts against you is a death sentence in the gop today. That is one of the hilarious contradictions of the Republican Party that made Trump the frontrunner in the first place. They've been toying with the beast of xenophobia, racism and biggotry for decades while all they care about is redistributing wealth to the richest. Now comes the real thing, the real embarassment: the idiot who yells what they have been suggesting in a sanitized version to appeal to voters they actually despise and work against. Well they get what they deserve. They're clearly hoping to disown Trump and going back to business as usual starting in 2020, forgetting why he won in the first place. It would be hilarious (in a cosmic sort of way) if Trump were to lose now and win the nomination again four years from now.
Unlikely. Trump is a petulant child. What do children do when they don't get what they want? They throw a tantrum. Expect and epic and long lasting tantrum so bad, to include creating his own garbage news network, that not only will he never have a chance to run again, his children won't be able to either.

I think Ivanka's distanced herself enough by walking out of the Cosmo interview and being pretty much silent since then. Donald also gave her credit for the maternity leave thing and supporting Planned Parenthood.

Maybe if Trump is dead when she runs. Showing his face instantly sinks her campaign.

The FEC is going crack their knuckles the instant this race is over.

Listening to this congressman defending trump on CNN is awesome. The ability to deny reality in some people is amazing. I can't decide if people genuinely believe the shit they say in his defense, or if they are just clinging to a slim hope that he will win and remember their support. Either way, that is kinda frightening.

It's astounding that people as dumb as them are in the position they are to begin with.

Once one visits some of the locales that elect these folks, it becomes less astounding methinks

On October 11 2016 02:18 {CC}StealthBlue wrote:Show nested quote +Pope Francis has put his progressive stamp on the American Catholic church with the selection of three new like-minded cardinals – including one who has sparred with the Republican vice-presidential nominee, Mike Pence – in a clear rejection of bishops who have advocated for the church’s exclusion of divorced and LGBT Catholics.
The American choices were among 17 new cardinals named by Francis. He has chosen more from the developing world and only one from Italy, reflecting his desire to decentralise power away from the Vatican in Rome.
In choosing these new cardinals – the “princes of the church” who serve as the pope’s primary advisers – Francis has made it more likely that his successor will be a moderate or progressive. It also partially balances out the influence of the cardinals chosen by his far more conservative predecessors, Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI.
The choices could create a “seismic shift” in the Catholic hierarchy in the US, according to John Allen, a commentator from Crux, a Catholic news publication. While the selection of Joseph Tobin of Indianapolis, Kevin Farrell of Dallas and Blase Cupich of Chicago could not be considered liberal by conventional political standards, Allen wrote that each was considered to be part of the “centrist, non-cultural warrior wing of the country’s hierarchy”.
Of the three, Tobin was the surprise choice, in part because cardinals are usually chosen from the main centres of power in the biggest Catholic countries, and Indianapolis does not fit the bill. He has sought a greater voice for women in the church and was involved in a high-profile battle with Pence last year, after the Indiana governor – a former Catholic who converted to evangelical Protestantism – fought Tobin’s efforts to resettle Syrian refugees in the state, claiming they posed a security risk. The archbishop prevailed.
Cupich is also seen as an advocate for Francis’s agenda and has encouraged other archbishops to be a voice for workers and immigrants. Irish-born Farrell has been a vocal supporter of gun control laws. Source
I'm an atheist, but I liked Francis' message from the start. Now I really like him. He seems very serious about dragging the Catholic church out of the middle ages, and to be fair, I thought he wouldn't last more than a year or two. He is far surpassing my expectations (which were admittedly very low after the very conservative, albeit likeable John Paul II, and the equally conservative but also extremely unlikable Benedict XVI).

The second GOP civil war in 2016. This is truly hilarious.

It's more of a gambit. You're betting on the notion that the support of the Trump people will help you more than the support of the moderate republicans, and so you defend Trump. Depending on the guy's electorate, he might not be incorrect.

People greatly overestimate the appeal of the GOP’s message to independent voters. As much as I shit on the democratic party, they understand the need to appeal independent voters to win elections. And to try and appeal to groups with conflicting view points. The GOP has just been buying and drinking its koolaid for to long.
If they had just worked with Obama for 4 years after Romney lost, they would be far better off.
