It's just a safe pick, I think. Not that picking Kaine has anything to do with a "milquetoast".
It could also be an attempt to make inroads with some "traditional" Republicans who are dissatisfied with Trump, since Kaine fits the mold of "fiscal conservative with with liberal leanings on social issues".
Trump loseing the primary made sense from looking at the polls and statistics from previous elections. His unfavorably shouldn't have allowed him to collect more then 30% of the vote in any state.
Hillary making inroads on republicans after the shitjob the party has done on her for the past 8 years in preparation for this election ?
I dont think Kaine is that bad, there is ton on the right that dont like trump. The Reps are on the edge of war with themselfs so Kaine might pull some of the moderates. He does have one of the most conservative records out of the dems i believe.
Trump has almost no room for error so taking off virginia from the map is the safest big state she can try to lock up. Take any of the 4 big swing states off the bored and trump basically has a 0% chance of getting 270
edit And unless Trump can fix the rift between him and John Kasich, that is GG right there
Hilary beat the shit out of Bernie on all measures except white males. TK is a strong strategic pick and will pick up on the one demographic Bernie was actually leading in.
Agreed. But I guess when you have a brown president, it's not far fetched a birther would be the next.
It's really typical of the left to suggest racism when there plenty of legitimate criticisms with the way.........
....fuck I can't do it. Yeah, we should have seen this comming when the birther thing never really died.
I did. I told everyone back when they didn't strongly shut it down on the right.
I've actually been right about Republicans more often than Dems this election, maybe I should vote for Trump
Considering how busy you have been at recycling Rep propaganda against Clinton, I wouldn't be surprised.
A lot of the loud Bernie supporters match closer with trump than actual progressive issues. Which is why they didn't bother voting for a democrat this election cycle. GH saying that is very normal.
Think tim kaine is a good but not the best pick. He looks to be a likeable person at least, and with that he is an exception. Not so nice for the progressive Bernie supporters, but they where never going to get anything anyway. Its just the way it is. Think kaine can be reasonable progressive btw,its just on abortion because of his religion but in other areas I think he could be. Warren would have been nice though, and imo the best chance to win. She is strong enough to go against trump (something I am not sure of with Clinton) Would 2 women really be to much on the ticket? Maybe there was a risk that she would be more popular and overshadow Clinton,i dunno.
For this election I think the supreme court nominations are an important issue that could be a strong point for the democrats but its a risky situation for both sides.
Pro for the republicans:the 2nd amendment. Despite all the recent mayhem with guns americans overall still like their guns and they would not want them to be taken away. Restricted maybe but not taken away completely. A republican president would make sure that nothing will change. Pro for the democrats:almost all the other subjects the supreme court decides on. There is a lot and stake and up to 3 justices could possibly be appointed by the next president. This will shape the supreme court for decades to come!. And the prospect of an ultra conservative supreme court, possibly holding back progress for decades to come on certain issues, might scare even conservative voters. It should scare those who are now on board with the republicans mostly because they are generally dissatisfied with the current situation.
I know people in this thread have varying opinions of Sam Harris and the different topics that he is (or isn't) an expert on, but I think this video is a really solid and coherent analysis of Trump. I recommend at least listening to the first 6:20, and if you like what he has to say, definitely watch the whole thing:

Did listen to it for the first 5 minutes, not impressed. Sam harris does not understand people like trump that much is clear, they live in different worlds. Sam harris is a thinker, trump is a do-er.
Sam harris for example thinks that science can determine human values, that to me is as silly as saying that science can determine the existence and nature of god. Trump isn't stupid off course,he might not have iq 180 but I don't think he has to be ashamed and he would probably top Clinton. He just has a different vieuw on the world and what is needed to accomplish things, which is logical if you look at their background.

Agreed, trump and Harris are opposites. Getting paid to think about things and just voice your opinion is a nice luxury. Most people have to do stuff, that's why I don't really respect philosophers. Trump is the type of person who will get things done. We may disagree on what those things are but there's no doubt he will make things happen.
While I don't like Harris; thinking work is work too; and it can be very important. I wouldn't really call it a luxury (though I can't speak to Harris in particular, as I do'nt know how much effort his work takes).

Besides being a philosopher, he's also a neuroscientist, so probably a good amount of effort.

You might be forgetting about the role of the US Congress.

Clinton is taking the very traditional approach of trying to appeal to the middle, rather than trying to improve turnout among progressives. However, this has been a very non-traditional election cycle thus far, and it remains to be see whether this is going to be a viable campaign strategy.
A rape survivor is suing Texas' Harris County after she was jailed for more than a month and subjected to beatings and "psychological torture."
According to court documents, she had suffered a mental breakdown while testifying against her rapist, and authorities checked her into the general population at Houston's Harris County Jail because they feared she would flee before finishing her testimony.
"Jane Doe found herself hopelessly trapped in a bizarre plot pulled from a Kafka novel," the court documents read. She "was imprisoned in the hellhole of the Harris County Jail for no reason other than being a rape victim who struggles with a mental disability."
The anonymous woman was raped in Houston in 2013, according to court documents, and was cooperating with prosecutors when she suffered a breakdown while testifying in December 2015.
She has bipolar disorder and was admitted to a local hospital for mental health treatment when the judge ordered a recess for the holiday break until January 2016.
According to the documents, authorities were scheduled to be on vacation and "did not want the responsibility of having to monitor Jane Doe's well being or provide victim services to her during the holiday recess."
The complaint alleges that the district attorney's office obtained an order from the Harris County sheriff to take the woman into custody so she would not flee before completing her testimony.
"Circuit Court Judge Jorge Cueto, presiding over a lawsuit related to unpaid bills brought by a local paint store against the Trump National Doral Miami golf resort, ordered the billionaire politician’s company to pay the Doral-based mom-and-pop shop nearly $300,000 in attorney’s fees."
This judge is Mexican. Trump is building a wall. Therefore, this judge is biased. Trump's explicit reasoning, not mine. Ya can't make it up.
