The best poll for Trump on hispanics had his number at 33% with them, but that's a much higher number than the other polls have found, and Romney/Mccain were a fair bit lower. Let me guess: the outlier poll was done by Rasmussen.

I would think calling someone else an 'Uncle Tom', or 'the Uncle Tom of gays' is inherently racist or homophobic just as much as tweeting pictures of Gorillaz to her is considered racist.
It's literally an insult against a black person based on the fact that they're black as a prerequisite of the insult.
I wouldn't think it would be any less racist if the gorilla tweets came from a black person than a white person or asian person

It was done by Quinnipac, but it had a 10 point margin of error and it's being conflated with some very... iffy online polls by some of trump's campaign.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2016/07/11/trump-supporters-are-celebrating-his-poll-numbers-with-hispanics-as-a-validation-of-his-rhetoric/
For comparison, Pew had him at 24% and the WSJ has him at 14(!)% with hispanics.

I wouldn't think it would be any less racist if the gorilla tweets came from a black person than a white person or asian person Uncle Tom (now) refers to a person that supports and defends the very system that oppresses their own people. The insult does not denigrate a black person for being black. It is not dependent on a person's blackness, but on a position they are choosing to take.
Whereas gorilla pictures are saying black people are monkeys... that's an attack intrinsic to the person/ ethnicity. I'll allow there is a possibility of Uncle Tom being used in a racist way (if wielded too broadly and without basis), but it's a false equivalence and not anywhere comparable, neither in quality nor in quantity to everything else in her twitter feed (you found one tweet of questionable meaning- I see reems of monkey pictures and references to Kong (King), coons, Harambe, and savages.)

EVERYONE GETS HATE MAIL FFS with screenshots of death mail he'd gotten, and then like you admitted, Twitter acted for PR reasons. I don't know if 'He direct his fan base to harass the black actress" is accurate- at least so far as I have seen. However, he IS legitimizing and defending all those gorilla pictures directed at her as though it's just harmless hatemail/ criticism of a bad performance. He is saying she is playing the victim over the twitter response to her and the twitter response to her is because of her terrible work... the twitter response that she was taking issue with was crystal clear: racist garbage- gorilla and coon insults. I don't see how he could miss the point because she was retweeting the ones she had problems with and they were all nothing much to do with the film and everything to do with black people = monkeys. As a public figure, he decided to validate this racist screed because her work was garbage. Do you see a different reading of what he is doing?
I have no doubt he gets death threats and that is unacceptable to me. That doesn't, in turn, make racist monkey tweets any better. I, for one, do not believe that if you make an inferior film that it's just expected that you should weather a storm of racist verbiage. I don't think that is just the price to be paid to be an actor. I don't know if Milo's tweets should = ban on twitter, but all the other ones, yes.

You many not be familiar because you seem willingly ignorant on the subject, but it is a common argument used by white supremacist. And it is born of knowing every little about history as a whole. Welp, facts are facts. Given that western culture is largely a creation of the white race (though I'll note that not all whites are part of western culture), and given the relative supremacy of western culture in the historical record, we run into a rather uncomfortable predicament, don't we? Civilization is larger than just western culture. And the majority of the accomplishments of western cultures are on the foundation of other races discoverys. Yeah, and we go all the way back to some form of monkey by that logic, which is why it's absurd to place undue emphasis on foundational issues. Sheer cultural dominance is a far better metric. Most historians don't really care about that metric. But it's works nice for your argument, so I can see how you would like it. And if that was the metric, China wins hands down. China has never has never had global dominance at any level. And we aren't too far removed (less than 100 years) from when China was little more than a colony to Western powers and countries emulating Western powers (Japan). So the according to your metrics, it only matter who was the last dominant power. Because they will surely have contributed the most advances in the recent past, and foundations don't matter. This is patently ridiculous. China never achieved global dominance. The extent of its power and influence never strayed far beyond its current borders today. The simple fact is that no civilization projected power and influence at a global level like Western civilization did, both in terms of global reach and in terms of sustained influence (you can make a case for Muslims, but even they clearly fall short). That fact, combined with the fact that modern civilization is largely a product of Western civilization makes it very to conclude that Western civilization is the most dominant historically.
Yeah I actually agree with Kwark. It's kind of meaningless to talk about "contributions to civilization" according to race, as if race (i.e. genotype/phenotype) had the defining impact on those contributions. If you look at flows of matter, energy, genetic material, and cultural materials through history on an extended timeline, yes, Europe had a lot of interesting attractors that came to dominate the global network, but that is a contingent historical reality that had little to do with "white"/Western culture per se.

As I imagine many here don't know, Uncle Tom was actually first written as a hero and based on a real person. Later when white people wanted to make it a production, they changed him into a "subservient fool who bows down to the white man".
"Uncle Tom" is in a nutshell how White America takes a cultural positive and turns it into a negative and then it gets reinforced by those it's meant to oppress. As repugnant as it is, I can't help but appreciate its efficacy.

When I finished Uncle Tom's Cabin I was actually rather saddened by what had happened to the phrase. Tom is the hero of the story, and it didn't seem negatively intentioned at all.

I was reading an interesting article that talked about how at the same time that Uncle Tom was falling out of favour by the Northern Blacks (I guess because of what was done in the productions), it was getting banned in the South because of its negative portrayal of slavery in the South.
Hit from both sides, the original story never had a chance in the modern era

The idea that you can shut up anyone who disagrees with you politically by declaring that they are bigoted and thus not legitimate is very dangerous, it is widely employed everywhere on the political spectrum, and it is not going to end well. It's hubris plain and simple and Nemesis always shows up sooner or later. Coupled to this is the idea that you can say bigoted things about groups of people because they themselves are actually the *REAL* bigoted ones or whatever, just as dangerous and full of hubris.
I'll also care about Steve King saying something pretty stupid (because it's so obvious as to be irrelevant, no duh Europeans contributed more to 'Western civilization' than non-Europeans. Chinese contributed more to 'Asian civilization' than Europeans, so did Japanese, so did Indians, so did every ethnic/national group of people indigenous to Asia, is it racist against Europeans to say so? No! Africans contributed more to 'African civilization' than Asians, is it racist against Asians to say so? No!) when everyone condemning him drops the double standard and condemns Charles Pierce's bigoted comments about old white men (of which he is one, but YOLO I guess) that King was responding to.
It seems like the political culture of the West is replaying the game of chicken Pharaoh and Old Testament Lemme Show You My #WrathSwag God had, with hearts hardening all over the place. It's really sad that there appears to be no end in sight to it and it is inevitable that violence will result. Push people and push people and push people - and that's what the bulk of the general discourse is any more, how far can you denigrate the other side because your side has the angels and the other side is basically Nazis so they deserve whatever they get - and they'll lash out sooner or later. And not on social media, in the real world.

Equally as childish is going to the white house to cry about it like a baby, come on now.
The only real argument I've seen that's remotely compelling is they ban him but they let accounts that are openly supporting terrorism slide. The only counter argument there is that maybe the FBI or someone tells twitter to let those accounts slide so they can continue monitoring them. But yeah, ideally that sort of thing shouldn't fly either. Being verified provides a bunch of features that are useful for anyone who uses twitter in a professional fashion. Removing it wasn't' just symbolic, it removed a lot of the functionality of twitter as a serve for him. Its still childish. Milo you were naughty so we're taking your gold star away. Twitter is a garbage service run by not awesome people. What is it about Dave or his opinions that you don't agree with? I dislike people who have made careers vilifying the other side of the political spectrum. His popularization of the term "regressive left" and general taking points are about creating an ethereal enemy, opposition he can rail against to please his fan base. And it has to be vague and ethereal so he can always rail against it. He is like Michael Moore, msnbc, Rush and all the others making a buck off division. He is In show buisness. Crowd pleasing. Not solving problems or making anything of substance. I agree but to some point they're important to to express the tough sides of free speech that aren't popular to support. Twitter doesn't profess to be some free speech bastion and if anything this is exactly what yilo's business is about. I'm surprised that he didn't bag a speech at the convention really.

I don't know if that should = ban on twitter, but all the other ones, yes. I think it was a shitpost so reading too deep into it could be a mistake. I don't see that criticizing her response validates the hate mail. He's calling it hate mail. We call him a public figure, but not enough to stay verified, and judging by the outcome, without the same pull as she had, despite having more followers... the whole thing seems rotten. She was obviously having problems getting flooded by insults before he ever tweeted at her. Yeah, Twitter probably should have been working on those people. But I don't see that criticizing her for complaining about Twitter's failings then makes him responsible for what other people are doing.
