As the CIA’s video cameras rolled, security guards shackled Abu Zubaydah to a gurney and interrogators poured water over his mouth and nose until he began to suffocate. They slammed him against a wall, confined him for hours in a coffin-like box, and deprived him of sleep.
The 31-year-old Zubaydah begged for mercy, saying that he knew nothing about the terror group’s future plans. The CIA official in charge, known in agency lingo as the “chief of base,” mocked his complaints, accusing Zubaydah of faking symptoms of psychological breakdown. The torture continued.
When questions began to swirl about the Bush administration’s use of the “black sites,” and program of “enhanced interrogation,” the chief of base began pushing to have the tapes destroyed. She accomplished her mission years later when she rose to a senior position at CIA headquarters and drafted an order to destroy the evidence, which was still locked in a CIA safe at the American embassy in Thailand. Her boss, the head of the agency’s counterterrorism center, signed the order to feed the 92 tapes into a giant shredder.
By then, it was clear that CIA analysts were wrong when they had identified Zubaydah as the number three or four in al-Qaida after Osama bin Laden. The waterboarding failed to elicit valuable intelligence not because he was holding back, but because he was not a member of al-Qaida, and had no knowledge of any plots against the United States.
The chief of base’s role in this tale of pointless brutality and evidence destruction was a footnote to history — until earlier this month, when President Trump named her deputy director of the CIA. Well, it's a good match for the pro-torture President. He's on record supporting waterboarding on more than one occasion.

Just wait until Putin decides some politicians in Ukraine need to be dealt with in a similar fashion. It’s only a matter of time.

But as CC said, and is right for once, Pompeo has been harder on Russia. Remember when Trump picked Tillerson that was also evidence that Trump was a Russian stooge. Now firing him too. My guy, some of us were adults in 2005-2008 we all started to learn just to far the CIA went and when they ran around covering their tracks. None of the people in change of that time should still be at the CIA, let alone be promoted. Yes, I'm sure we all remember her from over a decade ago. Maybe some. Anyways it seems like given all the concerns about experienced people in the Cabinet this isn't so bad. But maybe that's just my conservative/gop disposition showing I don't have a hate on for the CIA generally. Because it can't be that people feel that certain branches of the government should work to keep each other in check and not have one be run by the other, like the departments responsible for diplomacy and foreign espionage.
Or that people feel a certain way about those who are willing to oversee and coordinate torture.
Nah, has to be the left hating on the CIA.

BREAKING: Officials: White House fires top Tillerson aide who contradicted account of secretary of state's dismissal.
Also the Presidential aide had to resign due to being invested for serious financial crimes but was hired for Trump's reelection campaign.

I mean the state department and the CIA are basically the same group going forward from here. Presumably there some longtime folks still hanging around but the presumption about any future people placed into State by Pompeo is they are basically in line with CIA goals and methods.
I don't watch homeland too closely but I think they cover a bit of why that is beyond problematic. It would be one thing if it was just your run of the mill CIA warmonger taking over State, but someone like Pompeo with this pro-torture lackey taking over the CIA and someone as obliviously stupid as Trump at the head is probably the single worst thing to come out of the Trump administration to date.
It basically indicates a shifting of focus away from more traditional corporate interests to a focus on the Military-industrial complex. Which is probably how he's carving out room for his 'anti-gun' domestic rhetoric. Sure some smaller domestic AR-15 manufactures may suffer, but the massive arms manufacturers will see profits soar.
It's worth noting it's not just ceding control of State to the CIA, it's ceding it to the worst possible faction within the CIA.

How many of the 'we have the best people' crowd have been fired now? This is an unusual body count for a Presidency, isn't it? It's not just foreign media focusing on the firings?
I'm just wondering because about 30% of the time I hear news about Trump it's him firing someone else.
And is it just me, or is it that whenever he sends out a tweet along the lines of 'FAKE NEWS SAYS I WANT TO FIRE X BUT ITS ALL FAKE THEY'RE MY BESTIE' said person gets fired a little while later almost without exception?

So Tillerson blasted Russia yesterday for using a nerve agent on an ex Russian spy. Today Tillerson fired while WH still hasn't said anything about it.

Trump when asked about Tillerson firing specifically mentioned the Iran Deal and how Tillerson was ok with it, while Pompeo was 'always on the same wavelength'. So I expect more Iran warmongering soon.

Not nothing. It just sounds like Trump is, amazingly, being cautious.

Never mind, I forgot about this aspect of Pompeo.
I hate to tell you, the State Dept has been pretty much gutted so that institutional knowledge and experience is pretty thin now.

Y'all are missing the point on what's going on with Trump. He's cleaning house because he's ready to go full Trump and put in people who are ready to help him realize his vision. He's had a year to figure out how the presidency and politics work. He's learned what works and what doesn't work. Whom he needs and doesn't need. Now he's ready to act based on what he's learned.

Democrats are so bad at this...

lol. You really think Trump has a 'vision', or that this vision isn't idiotic?

What is "full Trump" going to look like, do you imagine? Can I get some specifics?
