I wish they would have gotten more shots of the emotions going through a crowd when a tense and epic game is decided, and the emotion of a player after winning or losing a truly important match, to show the world how seriously this is actually taken by those involved. I also saw no mention of the huge following the esport has, especially in south korea, and there was no mention of the large cash prizes either. Both which could show people not familiar with esports just how huge it is growing. I am however glad that at least it all was done in a positive light.

Do documentaries about tennis show 'tennis addicts', do documentaries about violinists show 'violin addicts'? When someone spends all day playing the piano people go 'look how dedicated and hard-working they are', but when they spend all day playing videogames it suddenly becomes 'oh my god that crazy addict'! The MVP one is much better eSports-wise. That said I do think videogame addiction is a real thing, and something worth discussing. But not in the context of eSports, and definitely not in the way mainstream media has been doing.

There's no such thing as Tennis addiction. Of course the problem for those involved is separating addiction from hobby and competition and career. The story doesn't try to draw a connection between eSports and addiction either, in fact it called eSports the bright side to mass-gaming (for lack of a better term). Plus, the prevention center was about engaging with the internet and games without losing control, not avoiding them altogether. Anyways, my favorite part was where MKP's middle school cut off internet because too many kids were watching him play instead of going back to class (crowd favorite from the beginning I see!).

1. This is way better than a news article from a couple years back on BW. I got so angry when the lady said players control 1 of 3 tribes?!? 2. They should have done Nestea instead and got Artosis on. nuff said

Ah, they were the days when we were looking at the undisputed best player in sc2. I don't know how long it will be until we see someone that far above again. So far this year there's no standout dominator. A lot of the players I thought would carry this year (MVP, DRG, MMA, MKP) haven't been at a consistently dominating level so far. Anyway, on topic (MVP) it was a nice news piece. I was sort of hoping they'd bring up his injury but it was sort of at the time where he was only starting to first mention it in interviews so I guess not. I really hope that he's getting it all sorted, given that he's not travelling to IPL TAC grand finals it feels like he must be at home for that very reason.

IdrA, HuK, iNcontroL, Grubby, DRG, Sheth, NaNiWa, WhiteRa, and maybe DeMusliM? I just noticed that 4 of these are EG players... o.o Just a small comment, when you show shots of the game, make it look exciting and make sure that the player's race is in the screen and that a Terran player (because it was Mvp who was in the documentary) was the one selecting the units etc. and doing whatever.

first of all the narrator's voice gets annoying with all the random pauses <_> Anyways... Tasteless says there is a difference between addicted gamers and competitive gamers, and that addicted gamers cannot truly be competitive. The narrator goes on to say that's not always true, and that there are a range of addicted gamers between the professional and amateur level... I guess CNN didn't understand (from that quote) that Tasteless was trying to just point out that competitive gamers are not all addicted gamers, but many are simply dedicated (as he says elsewhere) to mastering the intellectual games. At least, that's how I see it. Tasteless meant competitive gamer as in a gamer who is dedicated to being a professional gamer, while CNN seemed to interpret it in that quote as a "good" or "skilled" gamer (and that you can be "skilled" in games that you can't beat but are neither intellectual like Starcraft).

On August 03 2012 12:13 GTR wrote: nothing will ever eclipse the xellos national geographic documentary. Agreed! NG's documentary (in both length and quality) trumps all by far. I hope they make another one soon, now that eSports has grown a lot (that documentary was 7 years ago, which is a lot for eSports since eSports is relatively very new). In that documentary, i got the impression that people were still prize hunting and many practiced uncomfortably (looking at SC2 practice houses these days, they are much better). I mean, people still do prize hunt and such today, but there are many more sponsorships, and progamers today can make a lot of money coaching/streaming, which is additional revenue on top of their already steady salaries, paid-for-food/water/shelter/electricity/etc., tournament winnings, public appearances, modeling, etc. The only real thing I can criticize about NG's documentary is that I don't think they made it clear how much exactly they were living on. I don't know if this was intentional or if it was to make the documentary more interesting (passionate people working with little reward) and xello's story more amazing, but I got the impression that they were living almost completely on prize money alone. With winning only $20,000 or so with Xello's gold for 1 year, and the money being shared... seemed very very little to me once you spread it around ~10-15 people. You could look at this as a good or bad thing; it shows how passionate these people are but also gives an impression that the scene is very "small" and maybe not even "serious" when what seems to be the greatest tournament (WCG) only gives ~$20,000 to one starcraft progamer.

You're right, I glossed it over because clinically it's so much rarer than gaming/internet addiction (although most expercts are only guestimating and starting to accept that game/internet addiction is a real thing so the numbers could be quite inflated there too). I mean therer's that lady addicted to sun-tanning, but she's probably the only one in the US, so ya, anything you can think of there's probably someone who's clinically addicted to it.
