And this is nothing new. Whenever we have a male foreign exchange student in the school, all the girls want him and sometimes, the guys will react harshly.
Same with female exchange students. All the guys will flock around them and many of the girls will call her a slut. Why? Why do they even care? :S I would never ever ever date a girl in my class, for very obvious reasons.
offtopic, but a very fair amount of people meet get into relationships from places like school, i met both my ex girlfriend and my current in highschool, and then in university, and both relationships were/are great
so i dont understand your "obvious reasons", not to be rude, but im going to assume you havent dated or had much interaction with women

the entire video is essentially guys being guys, and a SELECT amount of korean girls being well... girls, it just so happens that korea is not supportive thats it, this happens in every single country Yeah it happens in every country. Jealous men or racists being cranky that "their" women sleep around with foreigners. But that the media in a country does a news report like this is HUGE.
it may be because korea isn't quite as multicultural as other developed countries and perhaps thats where this comes in, if you've ever played pandemic its sort of like that, now that the 'invading species' is present, it causes a stir

I have seen stuff like this in America against foreign women, particularly those from Vietnam and Thailand, saying they basically just want to take your money. Also, there were laws against interracial marriage up till recently in some states.

As a Korean, if I may offer you guys some form of excuse...
we're racist against all ethnicities, even Japanese and Chinese people ^^

When will those childish xenophobies finally stop...every human is the same under the skin...at least for me.

Do Koreans actually feel like that? I have heard that people frown upon Korean girls dating foreigners.

its not childish when u look at all the history thats influenced people to feel this way or whatnot, it shouldnt be as severe as it is now, but its already not as severe as it was in previous centuries.
theres a legitimate reason for this, and it cant be changed overnight

I hate unsubstantiated claims, but you can't ask for 5 academic papers every time someone says something. It's not like he said "oh I saw that issue on Vietnamese TV news too!" . So it's up to 2-10 sample size now? Very good. Try 10,000 and the appropriate robustness tests and then I'll pay attention to your claims. Can't forget a control sample either... This isn't www.elitistpricks.comYou clearly go to university and are very proud of this fact. I guess anyone that doesn't know how to find or reference academic papers doesn't have an opinion worth hearing anymore? And of course everything in this world that exists outside of quantified and categorised data musn't be worth talking about. Ugh, now I feel bad for adopting the same snotty tone you were using. Just trying to say the tone of your messages is very elitist and you can't just demand everyone who wishes to talk about something needs to reference their claims as if it's a university paper. This isn't an academic forum so hoping for that would be a bit silly. Nothing against you personally just I think you're posts were a little off. Good day! He/she made factual claims without providing evidence for them upon request. His beliefs on this matter were formed from a sample size of 1 individual, and perhaps news reports. This is how racist people think. They draw inference from crappy data. I was just pointing out that he was thinking about this badly. I know you are very proud that you just had your first statistics course or something, but you don't actually have to back up every claim you make in a casual discussion. The fact that Vietnam has problems with foreign sex-tourism is pretty common knowledge. Common knowledge does not have to backed up in an academic setting, let alone an internet message board. The common knowledge defence. lmao. There're foreigners coming to villages in Vietnam to buy off girls. There're video clips of girls lining up for some foreign dude to choose from. There're sex-tours where 4,5 guys from Taiwan, Korea coming here to choose girls. There're interviews of girls in and out of countries who are got lied to. We use the term "Taiwanese husband" to talk about those kind of guys (we use "Taiwanese" because Taiwanese makes up a big part of it, but there're still guys from US, Europe, Korea, even China). You can read these articles once a while in every common news websites, newspapers.
We have lots of articles about those stuff, just because no one sit down and count it for you, doesn't make it not true. You rarely see statistics in countries outside USA or Europe, statistics is not a popular subject, and there's no reliable way to gather data, social problems like this usually is more of the private side, where people don't want to talk about it openly.

The video is badly made obviously but I don't think it's right for us, as foreigners to Korean society, to say that the issues in the video are complete bullshit. To us, looking at the video as foreigners it seems insane but looking at the issue as a Korean who's grown up in a completely different society, the issue may have some validity. I don't believe that Koreans think all foreigners have HIV or something but if this video or ones like it means the Korean women will be more careful then I think the video is ok. The Korean women just have to take videos like these with a grain of salt, and I'm sure they have enough common sense to do so.

When you live in the most ethnically homogeneous country in the god damn world... shit tends to be that way. I am sure people will become more open minded in the future.
According to wikipedia: in 2007 the number of foreign citizens resident in South Korea passed the million mark for the first time in history. 440,000 of them came from China, with more than half of them being ethnic Koreans of Chinese citizenship
there's barely 1 million foreigners in Korea and half of them are of Korean descent...

Lol honestly if you were black they'll already be so dam fearful of you regarless of this. You won't want to know what we (chinese) get told.

Anyways you people need to understand the "intimacy" part. Relationships are really different in this part of the world and the stereotypical westerner's behavior is just hard for them to accept, just like how westerners find it impossible to accept women wearing headscarfs or how kids have to study really hard and forgo "socialising".
Of course, they sensationalised it with the hiv and stealing money part. Still, those were anecdotes. I'm sure similar anecdotal stories are being told everywhere.

Is this even Xenophobia? I kinda thought xeno was hate because the other is a foreigner.
But just because
1. There is hate + 2. The object is a foreigner
doesn't mean xenophobia. Like others here, Koreans just "protecting their women", so to speak.
ADDitionally, I'm pretty sure the subtitles convey much harsher meaning than intended. Everyone knows how widely innacurate the connotations and denotations of language used tend to be once a word, concept, clause or expression has been translated.
|
Yeah this isn't even comparable to Vietnam or Thailand.. I see what the documentary is raising but they way they slapped together the clips was pretty biased, you'll find the same attitude among a small sample of any race of people
|
If people studied a little bit of history, and learned about something called Orientalism (this will actually go a lot into gender and sexual issues) in the context of imperialism and colonialism (look up the opium wars while you're at it too, this might be why they try to portray foreigners as dirty devils), wouldn't it be kind of obvious why anti-foreigner videos are being made?
Of course, I don't think that history justifies this video at all. But maybe you would understand why sentiments like these exist, and stop acting like you're a complete and total victim.
