I've also been treated very kindly by most of the people I actually met in Japan in my time there. There are those who do mistrust and fear foreigners in Japan, and there is an undercurrent in society of groups who will spread lies and malicious propaganda about foreigners, but thankfully it isn't a mainstream thing. It looks to be more of a problem in Korea if this kind of thing is being shown on national television - that said people I know who have lived in Korea have had both good and bad experiences with native Koreans. The video itself was shockingly bad as journalism and didn't actually present anything close to a fact in the whole piece - it seemed to take for granted that you the viewer thought of foreigners as bad and mixed-race couples as a terrible thing. What gets me is when they say these poor, dumb Korean women being stolen by those evil forriners have no-one to complain to. What about the real victims of this piece, the foreigners living in Korea? Who do they complain to about racial stereotyping, slander and the outright lies in this piece - am I right in thinking foreign teachers working in Korea have to be checked for HIV/AIDS?

Keep in mind that sex is generally less casual in East Asian (specifically Korean, in this case) cultures, relatively speaking. I don't know how the subtitles are making this sound, but the subtext of this video is "we should try and not do this" as opposed to "omfg foreigners get them out of here". It IS open for interpretation, though, as can clearly be seen from some of these responses. If someone's already xenophobic, they're going to see this to confirm their pre-existing bias. I don't really see this as making anyone (or trying to make anyone) xenophobic, though. How is this not xenophobic? Assuming the subtitles are correct, they basically said "a lot of foreigners come here to take advantage of our women and when they are done they take their money and transmit the HIV virus." I'm very aware the gov wants people to come to Japan either to work or for holiday. However just because you had a pleasant time doesn't mean there aren't people who have problems. I know this shit exists everywhere but trust me I did a whole lot of research when I was looking into Japan about ESL etc a while ago. It's very common for people to get "kaijin" etc yelled at them and to be looked down upon.

Whenever we have a male foreign exchange student in the school, all the girls want him and sometimes, the guys will react harshly. Same with female exchange students. All the guys will flock around them and many of the girls will call her a slut. Why? Why do they even care? :S I would never ever ever date a girl in my class, for very obvious reasons.

Anyway, if it really says what the subtitles say, I believe that some formulations would be outgirht illegal here (at least it would be punished by the Broadcasting overview comitteee). Do they really not have any provisions against spreading xenophobia on TV in Korea? And the last point about the wholesome relationships, is that really Korea, not Iran? I knew something was going on in there for a long time, but had no idea that it is that bad.

Like anything you see on TV/Internet you take it with a grain of salt. It says alot about the korean media. Instead of focusing on highlighting injustices they focus on this instead. In Sweden we have ALOT of foreigners. We even have so many that we barely can take care of them properly because new people arrive almost everyday and we already have such a large number of foreigners that it's a huge problem for them to get any work. This is what the swedish media have been focusing on lately that we need to make it better for the foreign population so that they can get jobs and get more integrated into swedish society. We've even had a foreigner that tried to blow himself up to try to kill innocent people (although thankfully he failed). And many other incident who have happened in other EU countries. This just feels really petty by the korean media. Is this their major problem to report about? Only the racist's whine about the foreigners. If the swedish media did a news report like this there would be riots in the streets by both foreigners and ethnical swedes.

The video was extremely racist. You would have to be ignorant not to see how terrible this video is, not only in the quality of journalism, but also terrible in the sense that it will affect the South Korean society in a negative way by perpetuating hostile, hyper-critical, Xenophobic, and racist views towards foreigners.

Korea is pretty well known for its, at best, cultural "undertones" of superiority. I'm looking forward to my (eventual) vacation to Korea, and understand that any foreign country is a mix of opinions. The dangerous thing in this situation, or any one simmilar, is to assume that a whole country feels this way. Same goes with any country. There is variance and dissent in any country and this is just a sample of what I'll assume is probably a minorty in Korean opinion. I can't stand when Americans say things like "Iranians are like this" or "the Chinese are like that"... everywhere has a variety of people and it's pretty unfair to charactarize a large population off of one thing like this. edit: lol my first thought was this was going to be a collection of opinions about how bad the rest of the world is at Starcraft. I'm actually kinna glad it wasn't that. Racism is everywhere and it doesn't surprise me in the least.

Jealous men or racists being cranky that "their" women sleep around with foreigners. But that the media in a country does a news report like this is HUGE.
