And actually, it's very common for pros to stream with commentary and give advice. Most of them have a much higher level of understanding too, so it's more valuable. Banning someones cause of his freedom of speech didnt go the way you wanted. No, that's not the reason he was banned at all. You can go read the explanation given in the ban list. He's right about context of using words and there is even a term for it. The Locutionary act. Nobody is arguing that context doesn't exist in language. You're arguing against a ridiculously basic straw man. The particular context in this case is that Destiny was mad at an Asian person so he called him a "gook". How exactly does that context lend itself to his defense? When you display words that Society doesn't like, why is it bad besides political correctness? Because you're causing unnecessary pain to a particular person and the race to which that person belongs. It's not, there is no physical harm for this. Of course there isn't physical harm... what is your point? It's just ignorance at taking a word offensively for very little reason. Very little reason? The terms being discussed are some of the most vile, offensive words in the English language. Some of YOU should grow up, you hate on him because he says bad words and raises almost 40k for charity, good on you. People could care less about him saying "bad words". In fact, this community is extremely tolerant when it comes to "foul language". He could have said "Go fuck yourself asshole" and no one would have cared. The issue is that he repeatedly uses racial slurs. You can call me a retarded destiny fanboy ( like the majority of people who dont like destiny ) but then you are being so hypocritical on the situation and using an offensive word such as retard ![]() Well done, you really took that imagined response to task. tl;dr Destiny did more for the community than a lot of people/pros, gets suspended by teamliquid and lynched by people who no nothing of how society and language works. Go out in public and call people "niggers" and "gooks", you'll receive a good lesson in how society works.

Destiny's goal was to impose anger upon his opponent. I'm sure we both agree with that. By calling him a gook(having such thin skin), he did get offended apparently. In no way, shape, or form, does that make him a racist.

No. Minding your business and realizing that allowing everyone the freedom to say what they want also ensures your freedom is the mark of an adult. Thinking people should be punished because you disagree with them is childish.

If you have very limited information on someone you take what little info you have and make it an insult. You see it with every comedian vs heckler situation that has ever taken place. If they're a woman, they're getting hit with something sexist. If they're a race or have an accent or from a particular city then you hit them with that. Doesn't mean you hate women and accents and cities and races. It means you want a reaction from that person and you're using an insult that you suspect might illicit one. The power of those words or insults only comes from how you choose to react to them.

The fact of the matter is, me leaving Quantic or forfeiting any sponsorship really doesn't hurt my income, or affect me, much at all. He is basically saying fuck it. I think esports is better off without this kind of attitude. I am proud of teamliquid and quantic and how they took action in this situation.

I'm baffled by how one of the main arguments by the people who defend Destiny is that this wouldn't be so bad in the "real world". Since when is the internet less extreme than the real world? You go out into the real world and throw around racial slurs, and see how far that gets you.

Why would you care how much money he makes, that's akin to whole imposing moral issue at hand(this guy shouldn't be making money because I don't approve of him and he doesn't even win tourney's). He makes more money from streaming than a lot of pro's do playing in tourney's.

Your clarification isn't particularly meaningful, I don't need an in depth understanding of the etymology of racial slurs for my point to stand. You should prolly have a in depth understanding of a topic your trying to debate....Being educated about what your talking about is generally a positive thing. Saying these words have been oppressive and mean only death despair and savagery was talking out of your ass to make your point sound better then it was. Since your entire point was these words have always been and will always mean these things when they haven't and they won't in the future

Yay for free speech. I just finished my Con Law II exam, and feel like sharing some knowledge for those that are interested! Not all speech is protected, and the governing SCOTUS case is Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire. Some highlights for you -- some forms of speech have such minimal social value that they are not entitled to any 1st amendment protection including defamation, obscenity, and fighting words (personal insults likely to cause retaliation). Other interesting cases are Beauharnais v. Illinois and Wisconsin v. Mitchell. The SCOTUS also has funny distinctions on what it considers speech, and conduct, which are regulated and protected differently. All very interesting stuff.

First off, if I went out into the public and screamed curse words at everybody unprovoked, you bet my ass would get kicked. Same thing as if I went into public and screamed racial slurs. Now lets put it into context. This guy did some 1 base, 15 minute all-in. This is frowned upon by EU/NA players, so Destiny got angry, and called him a gook. Now, you're walking out in a shopping center, a guy goes up to you and starts insulting you. Calls you a faggot, etc. All you know about him is he has a Korean complexion. Destiny wants to make him angry. What's the best way to do it? Who the fuck knows, but calling him a gook might be.
