Introduction: Every time I watch higher level players like Huk Hero Whitera or Artosis play they always have their warp gates hot-keyed to a number (like 5,6,7 ect.) while some other players including myself would rather use W for our warp gates.
The advantages of using the W key that I could think of: -Closer to original hand playing position, thus easier to press, not to mention W is right by your gateway units' hotkeys (Z(zealot), S(stalker), E(sentry), T(High Templar), and D(Dark Templar).
Making warp gates W would mean leaving some critical open hot-keys for other production buildings like robo or stargate (Instead of 5-warp gate 6-robo 7-stargate you have W-warp gate 5-robo 6-stargate...far easier IMO)
-There is no threat of accidentally adding in unwanted buildings/units into the control group
-There is no need to shift add in any warp gates, W selects all warp gates manually.
Disadvantage 1: If you put your warp gates on a hot-key you can see the building time in between, for instance oh I only have 1/4 of my rotation left before I can warp in another round of units. But I think W still favors a hot-key for these reasons:
-If you try to warp in but you don't have a warp in ready, you can still see the building time if you look closely at the stalker/sentry/zealot portraits. It is more difficult to see, but still viable.
-Protoss does not need to warp-in units every time warp-ins are available, so the need to watch the dormant time of the warp-gates isn't as high. Besides, when your warp gates are ready for a fresh round a little blue icon at the side of your screen appears.
-Protoss shouldn't need to keep track of the dormant time of warp gates anyways for the same reason that Zerg have clocks in their brain for injects/creep tumors and Terrans for mules.
Disadvantage 2. Say you have ten warp gates, but you only warp in 5 zealots because you are supply blocked or only need 5 zealots or whatever.Your warp gates are now unaligned. Putting your warp gates to a hot-key allows you to see every individual warp gate and their building time.
-Not much to say about this. It is sometimes annoying when using W to have my warp gates unaligned and have a guessing game of how many warp gates do I have ready.
Disadvantage 3. If you have W as another hot-key.
-I tinkered with my hot-key setup so that there was nothing at W to get confused with warp gate. I would personally recommend the same, If you feel like you don't have enough hot-keys for everything, double up! I have T for build and cyber core so when I select a probe I just hit TT for cyber core.
***If there is any disadvantages/advantages I did not think of please post below***
Conclusion: There is no right or wrong answer for using W or regular-hotkeying, however I think that in the end the positives outweigh the negatives and that using W makes for faster, convenient play and would recommenced it to those who have not settled on a permanent hot-key system.
Just out of my own curiosity, what do you guys think is most comfortable?
Poll: How do you like to hotkey your warp gates?W! (32) 59% Some kind of numbered hotkey (1-9 or 0) (18) 33% Other (4) 7% 54 total votes Your vote: How do you like to hotkey your warp gates? (Vote): W! (Vote): Some kind of numbered hotkey (1-9 or 0) (Vote): Other
TL;DR Using W for warp gates means there is no need to create a control group and is placed in a more convenient area than 5,6,7, allowing for faster game play. Although it has its minor disadvantages, I personally think that the positives outweigh the negatives and that W is the more efficient way.

HuK uses W. He only uses 3 for normal gateways early game before he morphs them into warpgates.
|
I don't actually know anyone that hits a hotkey besides W for warping in units, although I know they do keep them all on hotkeys to make morphing them much easier (i.e. you hotkey the gateway when you make it, then you can just tape the hotkey, say '4', and then spam G whenever the gateway's are done but you need them to become warpgates).
|
i use w simply because i want to keep 1-3 as army 4-0 as production. To me it seems using w just free's up a number for use
|
Interesting, I was under the impression that the vast majority of Protoss players hot-keyed their warp gates.
|
I use Y because Gridkeys are ftw.
|
You don't actually warp in using your hotkey, you warp in with W but you add gateways as you build them to your hotkey to keep track of your extra gates so you can just hit the hotkey, tab over, and then just hit g for the number of gates to transform them... lol...
|
The only times I have ever seen a pro or any player above gold for that matter use hot keys for their warp gates are for early game when they are still gateways, There is 0 need to have it on a hotkey when one is already provided!
|
i use 5 for warpgates. i've always used w as a camera hotkey, usually the proxy pylon when i'm playing toss. hotkeying buildings to a number is absolutely not a big (even a small) deal lmao...

Kk I'm stupid. Someone close this thread haha.

I use a combination. i use a number for my warpgates, the same one for my barracks and hatcheries (i random) so in one sense i like using the number because it helps me use all three races, because my hotkeys for all of them are quite similar. when i'm warping in around my base, i use the number. when i'm warping in at hotkeyed locations, then i use w, because i have a tendency to double tap the number for some reason, which doesn't matter with w.

Huh. I didn't know that. Thanks.

I use middle mouse button as I think its easiest way to do so. Not like you need mouse button for anything when playing SC2.

I find it funny he said there's no chance of accidentally adding warpgates to your other hotkeys. You still select the warp gates, and I still frequently accidentally added WGs to my 1-2 army control groups I keep to 3 or my gates and use W as idle worker hotkey.

Exactly this, main - if not the only - reason to hotkey warpgates.
|
The real reason to hotkey warpgates is to hotkey warpgates and gateways together, then you know when to change the gates into warpgates
|
i dont have clock to know when to use mule i spam on ccs enough to see when i need to drop it
|
I hotkey my buildings in order since I play on Grid.
Cycle through 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.. make sure stuff is being built or researched on each hotkey in order of importance.
On Grid, the Warpgate key is Y and it makes me go out of my way further than just using 2.

The real question is why do Protoss get provided a hotkey to select all of their warpgates when Zerg don't get one for all of their hatches...?
