Just because one person (Mani apparently) is okay with people posting offensive humor regarding their children, it doesn't give people the freedom to do so with everyone. One thing most posters on TL.net seem to miss is that the whole point is RESPECT. You respect each other and each other's feelings, particularly on sensitive issues (family definitely counts as one). What is offensive is not determined by the person making the comment nor is it determined by the audience who happens to read or hear it, it's determined by the person who is being targetted. Of course there is a general reasonability standard that is going to be maintained (i.e. a person taking offense to being called a "poop"), but I'm sure that most of the community recognizes where that general area lies.

Even if FuDDx's response was angry and lashed out at baal, it was a completely understandable response to such a joke. You try saying something like that to a father in real life and see what happens. The excuse "hey it's a running joke here" won't stop the guy from smashing your face in. If anything, I found FuDDx's response to be expected and reasonable, it should have come as no surprise to anyone here. Again, the appropriate response to his reaction should have been an apology.

I am sincerely surprised that anyone jumped in to defend baal's comment and criticize FuDDx. Even if you believe that baal had no bad intentions, I don't see how you can fail to understand FuDDx's perspective and see it as the appropriate one. Say all you want about context and the community, the appropriateness of comments involving a person's family is for that person to decide, not us.

P.S. No, baal should not be banned for his conduct, but he (and the people who sided with him against FuDDx) should take a step back and realize how ridiculous it is to be offended by FuDDx's response.
