Protoss also have shields for their upgrades list which adds armor to the first 50% of damage they take.

The gameplay logic behind that is that protoss can't upgrade their life as well because they have shield and armor upgrades to care off.

Zerg upgrades: Ground : Melee attack, ranged attack, armor Flying : Attack, armor Protoss upgrades: Ground: Attack, armor, shield Air: Attack, armor, shield* Terran: Ground: Infantery Attack, Infantery armor, mech attack, mech armor Flying: Attack, armor *Note, shield works for both air and ground, so it's basically 1 upgrade, just listed it because it affects air as well

Seems quite cost effective for Protoss to be able to upgrade just one upgrade and get the benefit over all their ground units, where as if a Zerg wants to go lings with a gound unit they have to upgrade both upgrades to get the benefit for all ground units. I mean from what i've seen the only time Protoss upgrade shields is when it's late game and they are already 3/3 and have plenty of money. Anyways thank you for the quick responses.

So for Zerg it is as follows: - All Melee (class A) (Melee Atk) - All Ground Rranged (Class B) (Ranged Attack) - Class A/B (Carapace) - All air (Class C) As Zerg, you unlock different tiers of upgrades (1/2/3) at the 3 Tech levels (hatch tech/lair tech/hive tech) The Melee upgrades you get for zerglings apply to all melee units like Zerglings, broodlings (from buildings and broodlords) and ultralisks. Ranged upgrades for Roaches/Hydras/Queens air attack. Flyer upgrades for mutas/broodlords (initial damage dealt from broodlings reaching target as projectile iinm) and corruptors. Zergs often go for either Melee units OR ranged units and rarely both at the same time into the mid game. Late game is the exception but for the most part if the army is going to be based on ranged units then the upgrades can be tailored to that style of play sine ranged/melee combinations are often more rare than melee/air or ranged/air in part due to the upgrade system I will concede but carapace affects both ranged and melee and is a touch cheaper. so here you have 3 upgrades - armour, ranged atk and melee atk For protoss you have the following 2 classes All ground (Class A) (atk, armour) All Air (Class B) (atk, armour) All units and buildings (A/B) (shield) The thing about protoss is that while all ground attack upgrades and armour upgrades impact the units, the shields dont get any improvement when researching armour and shield takes full damage with the benefits of added armour only working when the shields are gone. While all ground can be upgraded this is often because Protoss has a mix of ground units and does not focus on a style of play. So there is often no "melee style" based army or "ranged style" based army. There will usually be some zealots and some ranged units incorporated. The shields make up the 3rd upgrade similar to Zerg's atk/atk/armour protoss has atk/armour/shield. For toss there is Psionic Style (emphasis on templar tech, archons) - it garners some use for shield upgrades - though they are twice the cost of any other toss upgrade (atk and armour = just the shield cost). If you play heavy with archons one shield upgrade is justifiable instead of armour. Or ground robotech (no use for shields as armour worth more of the units overall hp) Terran has infantry armour/attack and mech armour/attack seperate as well as ship (flying) attack/armour. Bio benefits from infantry upgrades, Mech benefits from the vehicle upgrades. As you can see all races follow 2 basic principles - Air units have their own upgrades (flyer, ship, air) - Race upgrade tech paths reflect the style of play chosen

This doesn't necesarrily mean upgrades favor them. That just means that for most of the game their armor upgrade only works for half their "total health". I wouldn't call that a favorable situation

Then SC2 just kept upgrades the same. This is obviously false, since upgrades weren't changed from vanilla to BW, and lurkers were added in BW.
