Why does Zerg have melee and ranged upgrade?

Very low level player here and don't understand why Zerg has to upgrade attack for melee and ranged separately yet Protoss which also has a melee unit has all units upgraded by the ground weapons upgrade?

I did search before i started this thread but couldn't find any answer.

Thanks in advance.

Because each units are classed differently, the upgrades are also marginally cheaper if its for the melee/attack carapace to even it out.
Protoss also have shields for their upgrades list which adds armor to the first 50% of damage they take.
Considering learning BW

Different races have different upgrades. They aren't meant to be mirrors of each other. If you notice both Protoss and Zerg do still have the same amount of upgrades. Protoss has Armor, Weapons and Shields while Zerg has Ranged, Melee and Carapace.

Every protoss weapons are laser thingies. It make kinda sens it work for every unit. :p

The gameplay logic behind that is that protoss can't upgrade their life as well because they have shield and armor upgrades to care off.

Why does Terran have upgrades for both Mech and Infantry? It's just game design + balance.

It's a design difference. Just think about it.

Zerg upgrades:

Ground : Melee attack, ranged attack, armor
Flying : Attack, armor

Protoss upgrades:

Ground: Attack, armor, shield
Air: Attack, armor, shield*

Terran:

Ground: Infantery Attack, Infantery armor, mech attack, mech armor
Flying: Attack, armor

*Note, shield works for both air and ground, so it's basically 1 upgrade, just listed it because it affects air as well

the reason? blizzard loves protoss.

Fair enough, well sortof anyway.

Seems quite cost effective for Protoss to be able to upgrade just one upgrade and get the benefit over all their ground units, where as if a Zerg wants to go lings with a gound unit they have to upgrade both upgrades to get the benefit for all ground units.

I mean from what i've seen the only time Protoss upgrade shields is when it's late game and they are already 3/3 and have plenty of money.

Anyways thank you for the quick responses.

Ok, how about taking the logic to a next level... If all toss have laser things and that's why all ground units get armor, why don't roaches get more melee attack damage from melee upgrade since they actually get, in this case, sharper claws. That is the only thing that i haven't figured out sense wise yet, but practically seems logic, since they are still ranged units. But, it's just like with the problem that Zerg buildings never actually get any armor, as opposed to Terran and Protoss, where they get either building armor or shields to help their buildings last longer. Just goes to show not everything is technically correct, but logically is fair.

the races are meant to be different. Look at Terran it has infantry and mechanized upgrades too. Each "class" of unit has its own upgrades.

So for Zerg it is as follows:

- All Melee (class A) (Melee Atk)
- All Ground Rranged (Class B) (Ranged Attack)
- Class A/B (Carapace)
- All air (Class C)

As Zerg, you unlock different tiers of upgrades (1/2/3) at the 3 Tech levels (hatch tech/lair tech/hive tech)

The Melee upgrades you get for zerglings apply to all melee units like Zerglings, broodlings (from buildings and broodlords) and ultralisks.

Ranged upgrades for Roaches/Hydras/Queens air attack.

Flyer upgrades for mutas/broodlords (initial damage dealt from broodlings reaching target as projectile iinm) and corruptors.

Zergs often go for either Melee units OR ranged units and rarely both at the same time into the mid game. Late game is the exception but for the most part if the army is going to be based on ranged units then the upgrades can be tailored to that style of play sine ranged/melee combinations are often more rare than melee/air or ranged/air in part due to the upgrade system I will concede but carapace affects both ranged and melee and is a touch cheaper. so here you have 3 upgrades - armour, ranged atk and melee atk

For protoss you have the following 2 classes

All ground (Class A) (atk, armour)
All Air (Class B) (atk, armour)
All units and buildings (A/B) (shield)

The thing about protoss is that while all ground attack upgrades and armour upgrades impact the units, the shields dont get any improvement when researching armour and shield takes full damage with the benefits of added armour only working when the shields are gone. While all ground can be upgraded this is often because Protoss has a mix of ground units and does not focus on a style of play. So there is often no "melee style" based army or "ranged style" based army. There will usually be some zealots and some ranged units incorporated. The shields make up the 3rd upgrade similar to Zerg's atk/atk/armour protoss has atk/armour/shield.

For toss there is Psionic Style (emphasis on templar tech, archons) - it garners some use for shield upgrades - though they are twice the cost of any other toss upgrade (atk and armour = just the shield cost). If you play heavy with archons one shield upgrade is justifiable instead of armour.

Or ground robotech (no use for shields as armour worth more of the units overall hp)

Terran has infantry armour/attack and mech armour/attack seperate as well as ship (flying) attack/armour.

Bio benefits from infantry upgrades, Mech benefits from the vehicle upgrades.

As you can see all races follow 2 basic principles

- Air units have their own upgrades (flyer, ship, air)
- Race upgrade tech paths reflect the style of play chosen

This doesn't necesarrily mean upgrades favor them. That just means that for most of the game their armor upgrade only works for half their "total health". I wouldn't call that a favorable situation

The reason should be pretty obvious but I'll clue you in. The only melee unit protoss has is the zealot so having a melee only upgrade for a single unit is pretty pointless. Melee upgrade for zerg works on lings, banelings, ultras, and broods. Ranged works for roach, hydra, and Infested terran.

Because zerglings, lurkers, mutalisks were really strong in BW. They all need different attack upgrades so zerg couldn't just tech switch and obliterate.

Then SC2 just kept upgrades the same.

Why does Protoss have defense upgrades split between Shields and Armour while Zerg only has to upgrade carapace for ground units?

it is more or less to make sure they can't just switch to whatever tech they want and still have the benefit flowing to that tech.

It's because with melee upgrades you're upgrading the muscles and claws of the zerg army while with ranged upgrades you focus on the shape and deadliness of the projectiles they fire.

If anything terran got the short end of the stick with 6 upgrades instead of 5, with the highest total cost and they need all unit types in 2 of their matchups.

This is obviously false, since upgrades weren't changed from vanilla to BW, and lurkers were added in BW.
I'll call Nada.
