Heres how working as an extra works:

Show up hours and hours before shooting ever begins. Sit around all day eating free donuts pretzels and soda. Actors and everyone shows up. You get told which direction to walk during the scene. Rehearse without the actors a couple of times, shoot real scene with actors. Eat free lunch. Sit around for a few more hours, do a few more scenes, go home. Get check in mail 3-5 days later.

Standard work day is usually 10 hours. Although if youre lucky, you might only work for 2 or 3 hours. You get paid a full days wage no matter what, which is 54 bucks. After 8 hours you get overtime. After 10 hours you get double time. All sorts of misc bennies they have to pay like if they give you lunch late, or have you do certain things etc etc. 90 bucks is probably the most youll make, 70-80 is more avg.

Of course if you get into SAG by getting 3 sag payment vouchers, you make about $150-$200/day, as an extra, for the same amount of work as you were doing for 90. But its hard to get into sag, unless someone on the set loves you.

ok good, thats the best area of LA to live in. All the good shit is west, no matter where you look. Stay away from the east side late at night. Never walk on Vine St or anywhere in the general viscinity. You might even want to keep yourself armed in some fashion if you absolutely have to walk around.

btw, a LOT of hot girls work as an extra. In fact, youll be hard pressed to find an ugly one, as ugly girls dont like the idea of beeing seen on TV.

lord no, the amount of time youll actually spend on camera for the entire day is about an hour or two. Although 4 hours of total time spent on camera isnt unheard of. The easiest style of work is television. Its comfy, you almost always work on the studio lot where its nice and air conditioned, they are all mostly close by to each other so you know where youre going, and most importantly, they stick to schedules.

Working on a feature film like spider man 2 and shit can involve upwards of 12-14 hour days, of which mostly just sitting around, but that gets old quick. Films are always in a panicky rush trying to do as much as they can per day, so avoid them.

Btw hovz, if youre slick, you can leave the set entirely and return before they finish filming and get paid for a full days work while you were at home watching judge judy. The best way is to have a friend on the set who decides to stay, so they can call you to let you know filming is almost over so you can get there in time. Me and a few buddies used to trade off doing this, so i'd work maybe once a week and get paid for 5 days of work just by clocking in and out. Otherwise, just wing it, which is risky, but doable. The people in charge on set see so many thousands of extras per week they never remember if you were there or not. If you get caught, admit it, forfeit your pay, and they usually dont really give a fuck.
